Campgrounds and RV parks near Coto de Caza, CA

Beach days dominate the local itinerary. Doheny State Beach has tide pools, a visitor center with aquariums, and protected swimming water near the harbor, while San Clemente State Beach and San Mateo - San Onofre State Beach put surfers within reach of Trestles and the Old Man's break. A 1.5-mile nature trail at San Mateo connects the inland campground directly to the surf zone. Inland, the Cleveland National Forest opens up hiking and equestrian trails from Ortega Oaks RV Park and Campground, with creek access and the San Mateo Wilderness nearby. Guests at Glen Ivy RV Park can walk to the adjacent Glen Ivy Hot Springs. Add Dana Point Harbor for whale watching, plus Mission San Juan Capistrano, a short drive from any of the coastal campgrounds.

South Orange County has a Mediterranean climate, so RV camping runs year-round, but conditions shift noticeably by season. Summer is hot, dry, and crowded: July through September brings long sunny days and consistently warm water, and the coastal state-park campgrounds fill quickly through the entire reservation window. June often opens with marine-layer mornings, the local 'June gloom,' that burn off by midday. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel. Temperatures are mild, crowds thin out midweek, and surf-contest weekends at Trestles can still tighten availability at San Mateo. Winter is the wet season, with the bulk of annual rainfall falling between December and February. Coastal sites stay open, but expect occasional storms and cooler nights. Gray whales migrate offshore from roughly December through April, visible from the bluffs at San Clemente and San Onofre. Inland sites along Ortega Highway can see fog and chillier mornings in winter, and fire-season closures are possible in the Cleveland National Forest during dry, windy stretches in late summer and fall.

Coastal state-park campgrounds in this area are popular and tightly packed. Sites at Doheny and San Clemente sit close together, train noise from the coastal rail line carries at night, and beach access from San Clemente involves stairs or a steep trail down the bluff. Hookups vary: San Clemente has full hookups at sites 1 to 72, San Mateo at San Onofre offers water and electric at sites 1 to 67, and Doheny has no hookups but does provide a dump station. Maximum trailer length is listed at 30 feet at San Clemente per California State Parks and up to 36 feet at San Mateo. Doheny accommodates RVs and trailers up to roughly 35 feet, depending on the specific pad. Dogs are allowed in the campgrounds but not on the beach or trails at the state parks. Inland at Ortega Oaks RV Park and Campground and Glen Ivy RV Park, expect full-hookup RV sites and a quieter, residential feel suited to longer stays.
