Camping near Covelo, California
Covelo sits in Round Valley, a remote mountain basin in northern Mendocino County roughly three hours north of San Francisco. The town is one of the primary access points to the Mendocino National Forest, the only national forest in California without a major paved road crossing it. That isolation defines the camping experience: wild rivers, oak and pine canyons, designated wilderness, and long stretches of gravel forest road.
RV travelers typically stage out of Covelo to reach Eel River sites, Lake Pillsbury, or the redwood corridor along Highway 101. Closer-in private options include Mendocino Magic and Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort, while public options range from the PG and E Eel River Area Trout Creek Campground to Rock Creek - Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area on the South Fork Eel. Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina anchors lake-based camping further east. Cell service is limited across the region, and many forest routes are narrow with tight turns, so trip planning and offline maps matter more here than at front-country parks.
Things to do around Covelo
Outdoor recreation drives every trip here. The surrounding Mendocino National Forest offers hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, photography, and off-highway vehicle travel, with several designated wilderness areas accessible from the Covelo and Upper Lake districts. Lake Pillsbury supports fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating, and Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina provides boat and kayak rentals along with the only fuel on the lake. Note that PG and E has closed Lake Pillsbury to motorized watercraft due to invasive mussels. Along Highway 101, Rock Creek - Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area gives access to the South Fork Eel River for wading and swimming when water levels are safe, plus redwood groves and the 225-foot Miles Standish Tree. Mendocino Magic adds a private reservoir, miles of trails, and dark-sky stargazing. Black-tailed deer, river otters, eagles, and Tule elk are commonly seen across the region.

Camping near Covelo is highly seasonal. Most campgrounds at Lake Pillsbury are closed seasonally and open from May to September, with Oak Flat Campground open year-round. Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina runs all amenities from Memorial Day through Labor Day and offers limited services the rest of the year. Many other Mendocino National Forest sites and PG and E Eel River campgrounds are also winter-restricted, with closures typical from late fall through spring.
Summer is hot and dry, with fire restrictions common and a real risk of wildfire-related closures on forest roads. Spring brings high water on the Eel, wildflowers, and stronger waterfall flows, but some forest roads remain muddy or gated. Fall is cooler and quieter, with stable weather often holding through October. Winter is the wet season: rivers run high, snow is possible at higher elevations, and high water and removal of seasonal bridges make much of Standish-Hickey inaccessible, although at least one campground there is always open.
How to book a site
Reservation systems vary by operator. Sites in the Mendocino National Forest are reserved through Recreation.gov, which lists 19 campgrounds and 2 permits for the forest. The Lake Pillsbury basin is an exception: camping is first-come, first-served with no reservations required except for Fuller Grove Group Campground, which is reserved on Recreation.gov. California State Park sites, including Rock Creek at Standish-Hickey, are booked through ReserveCalifornia on a rolling six-month window that opens daily at 8 a.m. Pacific time. PG and E concession campgrounds along the Eel follow their own seasonal procedures. Private operators such as Mendocino Magic, Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort, and Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina take direct bookings through their own websites. Summer weekends fill quickly across all systems, so reserve as soon as the window opens.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rural, low-service country. Roads into the forest are narrow and winding, and rig length matters: at Standish-Hickey, campsites accommodate tents, trailers up to 24 feet, and RVs up to 27 feet, with the Redwood loop limited to vehicles 18 feet and under and no trailers. Hookups are uncommon at public sites, though Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort offers RV-specific amenities. Most Lake Pillsbury and forest sites have vault toilets and limited or no potable water, so arrive with full fresh tanks. Cell signal is unreliable across the region, so download maps and reservation details before leaving town. Poison oak is widespread in oak and riparian zones, bears and rattlesnakes are present, and summer brings strict campfire rules. A free California campfire permit is required for stoves and lanterns on forest land outside developed campgrounds.

Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Covelo options are easy to find on RVezy. Mendocino National Forest allows leashed dogs on most trails and in developed campgrounds, including Eel River Campground and Hammerhorn Lake Campground. Pack a collapsible water bowl, plenty of shade, and tick prevention since the oak woodlands can be tick country in spring.
fs.usda.gov/main/mendocino/homeCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Covelo?
Yes, RV delivery Covelo is a popular option and a smart choice for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts based in Willits, Ukiah, or Laytonville deliver motorhomes or travel trailers directly to Eel River Campground, Hammerhorn Lake, or a private property in Round Valley, then set up, level, connect any hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is especially helpful on the curvy climb up Highway 162 into Covelo. Use the Delivery filter when searching and message the host with your exact destination to confirm fees and availability.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covelo,CaliforniaHow far can I drive on my Covelo RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?

From Covelo you can reach Fort Bragg and the Mendocino Coast (about 75 miles west), Clear Lake (about 70 miles south), the Avenue of the Giants redwoods (about 90 miles north), or Lake Pillsbury (about 50 miles east via Forest Route M1). rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covelo,CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Covelo to park my RV?
Covelo is the gateway to some of California's most underrated RV camping. Top picks include Eel River Campground (15 sites along the Middle Fork Eel River with pull-throughs for larger trailers), Hammerhorn Lake Campground (9 quiet sites with potable water at about 3,500 feet elevation), Howard Meadows Campground (mid-elevation, near Howard Lake for trout fishing), Atchison Campground (10 first-come rustic sites in oak and pine), and Wells Cabin Campground (high-elevation, perfect for summer escapes). All are in Mendocino National Forest. Booking early on Recreation.gov is wise for summer weekends, though many sites here are still first-come, first-served, which is rare in California.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1068When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Covelo?
Late spring through early fall (May to October) is prime time for RV camping Covelo style, with daytime highs from the upper 60s in May to the mid-80s in July and August, and cool nights in the 50s. Forest roads to higher-elevation campgrounds like Hammerhorn Lake and Howard Meadows typically open by Memorial Day after snowmelt. October is a local favorite for warm days, river fishing, golden oaks, and minimal crowds. Winters in Round Valley are wet (most of the area's annual rainfall arrives November through March) and many high-country roads close. For wildflowers, aim for April at lower elevations.
weather.gov/eka/I've never rented an RV before. Is Covelo a good place to start?
Covelo is a great first time renting an RV destination because the pace is slow, traffic is minimal, and your host supports you every step of the way. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, the generator, water systems, slide-outs, and dump procedures. If you would rather skip driving, choose a host who delivers to your campground inside Mendocino National Forest. A smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer is easier to maneuver on Highway 162's curves into Round Valley. You can message any host through the platform before booking, which is exactly what RVezy is built for.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Highway 162, a battery issue at Eel River Campground, or a tow from a forest road is handled with a single phone call. RVezy support is also available before, during, and after your trip if anything comes up with the RV's systems or the host. Cell service can be spotty deep in Mendocino National Forest, so save the support number in your phone before you leave Covelo and ask your host where local signal is strongest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips I can take from Covelo in an RV?
Covelo is a launchpad for some of Northern California's best road trips. Popular RV road trip from Covelo routes include the Lost Coast via Highway 101 to Shelter Cove (about 100 miles, 2.5 hours); the Avenue of the Giants and Humboldt Redwoods State Park (90 miles north, about 2 hours); the Mendocino Coast via Highway 20 to Fort Bragg and Mendocino Village (75 miles, 2 hours); Clear Lake State Park (70 miles south, 1.5 hours); and Lake Pillsbury inside Mendocino National Forest (about 50 miles via gravel forest roads, allow 2 hours). Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, and cross-border travel to Oregon may be allowed with host approval.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425How much should I budget for fuel on a Covelo RV trip?
Class B campervans and small travel trailers average 14 to 20 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get around 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. California gas prices are typically the highest in the country, and rural Mendocino County stations near Covelo can run higher than the state average, so top off in Willits or Ukiah on Highway 101 before heading east on Highway 162. Diesel is available at the larger stations. Tip: keep your route compact and base-camp at one campground for the best fuel economy.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Covelo?
For peak summer weekends (July 4, Labor Day) at reservable Mendocino National Forest sites like Hammerhorn Lake or Wells Cabin, book on Recreation.gov as soon as the 6-month rolling window opens. Midweek and shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October are far more relaxed and you can often grab a site a week or two out. Several local campgrounds, including Atchison and parts of Eel River Campground, are still first-come, first-served, which is a rare gift in California, just arrive by Friday morning. Pro tip: if reservable sites are full, drive 30 minutes up Mendocino Pass Road to find dispersed camping on national forest land.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/1068What are the driving conditions like around Covelo?
Covelo sits in Round Valley at the end of Highway 162, a scenic two-lane road that climbs about 25 miles east from Longvale on Highway 101. The drive includes curves and grades but is well-paved and easily handled in any RV with steady, slow driving (aim for under 35 mph on the curviest stretches). Inside Mendocino National Forest, roads transition to gravel and dirt, including Mendocino Pass Road (M1), which can be rough for larger rigs and is generally closed by snow from December to April. Watch for cattle, deer, and logging trucks. Local tip: fuel up and grocery shop in Willits before the climb into the valley.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Covelo?
Most campgrounds around Covelo are classic national forest style: rustic, scenic, and light on hookups. Expect picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and potable water spigots at sites like Hammerhorn Lake and Eel River Campground, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at most U.S. Forest Service sites. The closest full-hookup RV parks are about 30 to 45 minutes away in Willits and along the Highway 101 corridor. Plan a stop at a Willits RV park to dump tanks and refill water. Pack extra fresh water and conserve power and you will be set for several nights off-grid in the forest.
fs.usda.gov/main/mendocino/homeWhat's inside a typical RV rental from Covelo hosts?
A typical motorhome rental Covelo or campervan rental Covelo travelers book includes a queen or king bed, a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, dinette seating with seatbelts, and often a TV or sound system. Many rigs include a generator for off-grid power at Mendocino National Forest sites without hookups, plus solar on newer builds. Wi-Fi is not reliable out here regardless of the rig, so plan to unplug or bring a cellular hotspot. Each listing details every feature, including sleeps count, so you can filter for exactly what your family needs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covelo,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Covelo RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer add-ons that make a family RV trip Covelo even smoother. Common options include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, generators, propane fire pits, kayaks, paddleboards, and Starlink kits for staying connected in remote Mendocino areas. Pickup and dropoff are typically at the host's home base, but delivery to your campground or property is widely offered, often a fixed fee plus a per-mile rate. Mileage policies and pet fees are clearly listed on every page. Tip: ask your host to bundle delivery, setup, and add-ons, since many discount the package for multi-night trips.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Covelo,CaliforniaHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly when you book, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip starts (amounts vary by RV, commonly $500 to $1,500) and is released after dropoff once the host confirms the rig comes back in the same condition. To keep the process smooth on your Round Valley trip, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the dump and refuel instructions from your walkthrough, and message the host promptly if anything happens during the trip. The whole process is handled in-app with RVezy support standing by.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Covelo during winter, and what should I know about cold-weather camping?
Yes, winter RV rental in Covelo is doable and can be beautiful, with snow-dusted oaks, empty trails, and storm-watching skies over Round Valley. Lower-elevation campgrounds and private RV parks along Highway 101 stay open year-round, while higher Mendocino National Forest sites typically close from November through April due to snow. Look for a rig with a furnace, heated holding tanks, and good insulation (filter for these features or message the host). Bring extra propane, a heated water hose if you will have hookups, and check Caltrans for chain requirements on mountain routes before you head out.
