Hiking is the headline activity. Cuyamaca Rancho State Park has more than 100 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, including the roughly 2-mile climb to Stonewall Peak and the 3.5-mile route to 6,512-foot Cuyamaca Peak, both reached from the Paso Picacho area. Green Valley Falls, near Green Valley Campground, draws families when seasonal flows fill the pools. Lake Cuyamaca, two miles north of Paso Picacho, offers boating and year-round trout fishing plus bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, and a small sturgeon population. Swimming and body contact with the lake are not allowed, since it is a drinking-water reservoir. A California state fishing license and a separate lake permit are required. Day trips to Julian for apple orchards and bakeries, or to the cooler Mount Laguna area in Cleveland National Forest, round out a typical itinerary.

Elevation drives the seasons here. Summers are warm and arid with mostly clear skies, while winters are long, cool, and partly cloudy. Daytime highs in summer typically reach the mid-80s, and winter nights can drop into the 30s, occasionally bringing snow that locals use for sledding and snowshoeing. Spring is the strongest window for waterfalls and wildflowers, with Green Valley Falls running best after winter storms. The two state-park family camps, Paso Picacho and Green Valley, are on the reservation system spring through fall, and weekends fill quickly from April through October. Summer brings comfortable mountain nights but also peak fire danger; wood fires are commonly restricted, and pressed-wood logs or charcoal may be the only options at some sites. Lake Cuyamaca prohibits wood fires year-round and allows only propane fire rings and charcoal grills. Fall offers cooler hiking weather and lighter crowds midweek. February is typically the wettest month, so trip planners should watch for storm closures and muddy trails.

Expect mountain conditions, not coastal ones. Most state-park sites sit between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, so nights are noticeably cooler than San Diego, and cell service is spotty. Paso Picacho has 85 sites plus rustic cabins, flush toilets, pay showers, drinking water, and a dump station, but no hookups, and accommodates RVs up to roughly 30 feet. Green Valley has 81 sites along the Sweetwater River with similar amenities. Lake Cuyamaca offers gravel RV pads with electric and water at Chambers Park, plus walk-in tent sites at West Shore and Lone Pine; the access road can be tight for larger trailers, and there is no on-site dump station. Oakzanita Springs RV Campground offers full hookups, a pool, laundry, and a camp store. Dogs are allowed in state-park campgrounds and on paved roads but are not permitted on most trails.
