El Rio camping overview
El Rio is an unincorporated community in Ventura County, California, just north of Oxnard along the Santa Clara River and a short drive from the Pacific coast. Its location near U.S. Highway 101 makes it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Ventura coastline, the Santa Monica Mountains, and inland routes toward Ojai and the Topa Topa range.
Campgrounds in the area range from full-hookup private RV parks close to town services to beachfront state park sites along the Pacific Coast Highway. Evergreen RV Park sits within the El Rio area itself, while Ventura Beach RV Resort, Emma Wood State Beach, Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday near Santa Paula, and Thornhill Broome Family Camp at Point Mugu State Park are all within roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive. The mix of inland and coastal options gives travelers flexibility on weather, hookups, and scenery without long repositioning days.

The El Rio and Ventura coast camping season runs year round, though demand and conditions shift noticeably with the calendar. Summer, from June through August, is the peak booking window. Coastal state park sites such as Emma Wood State Beach and Thornhill Broome at Point Mugu fill quickly once the six month ReserveCalifornia window opens, especially for weekends and holidays. Marine layer fog is common on summer mornings and usually burns off by midday.
Spring and fall are quieter and often offer the clearest skies, with warm afternoons and cool nights. Whale migration along the coast peaks in late winter and early spring. Winter, from December through February, is the wet season and brings the heaviest rainfall of the year, occasional Pacific storms, and the chance of beach erosion or temporary closures at low-lying sites. Inland options like Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday tend to stay drier when coastal sites are exposed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️

Had a great time and our trailer was perfect. Oscar was wonderful as well.

The RV was great! Had everything we needed. Arie is amazing! Picked us up and dropped us off. He was always available if we had any questions during our trip.

Booking and reservations near El Rio
State park campgrounds in the area, including Emma Wood State Beach and Thornhill Broome Family Camp at Point Mugu State Park, are reserved through ReserveCalifornia. The system uses a rolling window that opens reservations six months to the day in advance of the arrival date, with new inventory released each morning at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Popular summer weekends can book out within minutes of opening.
Private parks such as Evergreen RV Park, Ventura Beach RV Resort, and Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday are booked directly through the operator websites or by phone. A limited number of first come, first served sites are available at Thornhill Broome, with midweek arrivals offering the best odds outside of summer.
What to expect when camping near El Rio
Hookup availability varies sharply by site type. Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and easy access to grocery stores in Oxnard and Ventura. State beach sites are more primitive: Thornhill Broome has vault toilets, no hookups, and no on-site showers, with a dump station available at the nearby Sycamore Canyon Campground in the same park. Sites accommodate RVs up to about 31 feet.
Coastal sites can be windy and sandy, with little shade, so awnings and stakes rated for wind are useful. Highway noise from Pacific Coast Highway is audible at beachfront camps. Cell coverage is generally reliable near El Rio, Ventura, and Oxnard but thins out in canyons inland.
