Forest Ranch camping overview
Forest Ranch is a small unincorporated community in Butte County, California, set in the Sierra Nevada foothills along Highway 32 between Chico and Lassen Volcanic National Park. The area sits at roughly 2,400 feet elevation in a mixed pine and oak landscape, with a hot-summer Mediterranean climate that brings dry summers and wet, cool winters.
RV travelers use Forest Ranch as a quiet base for exploring the upper Sacramento Valley and the western Sierra. Most developed RV options are clustered downhill in Paradise, Oroville, and along the Sacramento River corridor near Corning, while state recreation areas at Lake Oroville and Woodson Bridge handle the bulk of public-land camping in the region. Nearby options include Pine Ridge RV Park and Storage and Quail Trails Village in Paradise, Lime Saddle at Lake Oroville State Recreation Area, River One RV Park, and Woodson Bridge State Recreational Area along the Sacramento River. Wildfire history shapes local conditions, so checking current fire restrictions before a trip is standard practice.
Things to do near Forest Ranch
Highway 32 climbs from Forest Ranch into Lassen National Forest, giving access to swimming holes along Deer Creek and Big Chico Creek and to trailheads heading toward the southern Cascades. Downhill in Chico, Bidwell Park offers miles of hiking and cycling along Big Chico Creek, plus a city downtown with breweries and farmers markets.
Lake Oroville supports water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, swimming, and the popular Feather Falls trail. Anglers target bass on Lake Oroville and king salmon and steelhead on the Sacramento River near Woodson Bridge. Birders work the oak-riparian habitat along the river, where bald eagles are regularly reported.

Camping in the Forest Ranch area runs year-round at private parks, while nearby state recreation areas follow different schedules. Lime Saddle Campground at Lake Oroville is open all year. Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area is closed seasonally October 1 through March 31 and reopens April 1.
Spring is mild and green, with wildflowers in the foothills and rising flows on local creeks. Late spring through early summer is the most comfortable stretch for valley and foothill camping before peak heat arrives. Summer is hot and dry, and lake-based sites at Lake Oroville fill quickly on weekends; afternoon temperatures in the valley regularly climb into the 90s. Wildfire risk is elevated from mid-summer into fall, and fire restrictions on open flames are common.
Fall brings cooler nights and good fishing on the Sacramento River, while winter is the wet season, with the heaviest rainfall and occasional snow at higher elevations around Forest Ranch itself.
Booking campgrounds near Forest Ranch
State park sites at Lime Saddle and Woodson Bridge are managed by California State Parks through ReserveCalifornia. Reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance. Bidwell Canyon, Lime Saddle, and Loafer Creek have a 15-day stay limit with a required 48-hour vacancy before return, up to a maximum 30-day total per unit each calendar year.
Woodson Bridge sites are often available without a reservation outside peak summer weekends, but booking ahead is sensible from late spring through early fall. Private parks such as Pine Ridge RV Park and Storage, Quail Trails Village, and River One RV Park are booked directly through the operators, which is the most reliable route since they are not listed on the state portal.
What to expect around Forest Ranch
Forest Ranch itself is rural and lightly serviced, with limited fuel and grocery options; Chico, about 15 miles down Highway 32, is the main supply town. Roads into the foothills are paved but winding, and larger rigs should plan turns and grades carefully.
At Lime Saddle, sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 40 feet, with some sites offering electric and water hookups; amenities include drinking water, a dump station, and accessible restrooms. Woodson Bridge has 37 campsites with no RV hookups but can accommodate RVs as large as 31 feet. Cell coverage is reliable in valley towns but spotty in the foothills above Forest Ranch.

Forest Ranch shines from late April through mid-June and again from September into October, when daytime highs hover in the comfortable 65 to 80°F range and the foothills are green or turning gold. July and August are gorgeous but hot, with highs near 90°F in town and cooler temps as you climb into Lassen National Forest at higher elevations. Winter brings cool, wet weather (40s by day, 30s at night) and occasional snow above 3,000 feet, which can be magical for cozy campervan rental Forest Ranch trips. Pro tip: late September delivers warm days, cool nights, fall color along Butte Creek Canyon, and fewer crowds at Lassen Volcanic National Park.
weather.gov/sto/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Forest Ranch?
You've got this, and first time renting an RV in Forest Ranch is a great way to learn. Your host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, propane, and the dump tank, and you can text them any time during your trip. Highway 32 from Chico into Forest Ranch is a scenic two-lane road with curves climbing through Butte Creek Canyon, so take it slow and use turnouts for faster traffic behind you. If you're nervous about mountain driving, choose a Class B campervan or small Class C, or have the host deliver and set up the RV. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice in Chico before heading uphill.
dot.ca.gov/travelWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every motorhome rental Forest Ranch booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. Cell service can be spotty in parts of Lassen National Forest and along Highway 32, so download offline maps before heading out and note that you'll often catch a signal again in Chico, Paradise, or Chester. Your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app for any quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: take photos of the RV at pickup and save the roadside assistance number in your phone before leaving the driveway.
chp.ca.gov/programs-services/services-informationCan I take my Forest Ranch rental on a road trip across state lines?
Yes, most hosts welcome interstate RV road trips from Forest Ranch, and Oregon, Nevada, and the rest of California are all easy reaches. Popular routes include heading north on I-5 to Crater Lake (about 5 hours), east over Highway 36 to Reno and Lake Tahoe (3 to 4 hours), or south to Yosemite (5 hours). Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't cover it. Travel into Canada may be possible with host approval. Just confirm your planned route with the host before booking via the listing's message button. Pro tip: a loop up to Lassen, then over to Lake Almanor and back makes a stellar 3-day RV camping Forest Ranch itinerary.

Budget smart and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs roughly 6 to 10 mpg. With California gas in the Chico area generally running $4.50 to $5.25 per gallon (often a bit cheaper than the Bay Area), a 3-day loop to Lassen Volcanic National Park and back, about 200 miles, costs roughly $80 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Chico before climbing Highway 32, as stations get sparse past Forest Ranch. Pro tip: GasBuddy and Costco in Chico are your friends for the cheapest fill-ups before heading to the mountains.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/californias-gasoline-marketHow far in advance should I book a campground near Forest Ranch?
For peace of mind, book 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends at Lassen Volcanic National Park (Manzanita Lake and Summit Lake campgrounds release on Recreation.gov on a rolling 6-month window) and 2 to 3 months ahead for Lake Oroville State Recreation Area sites on ReserveCalifornia. Lassen National Forest sites like Butte Meadows and Cherry Hill often have first-come, first-served spots that fill by Friday afternoon in July and August. Private RV parks in Chico are usually easier to grab on shorter notice. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) dramatically improve availability and let you snag the best riverside sites along Butte Creek without the weekend rush.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2992What's driving like in and around Forest Ranch?
Driving is scenic and very manageable with a little awareness. Highway 32 from Chico to Forest Ranch climbs about 2,000 feet through Butte Creek Canyon with curves, shoulder drop-offs, and the occasional logging truck, so take your time and use turnouts. In summer, watch for afternoon thunderstorms at higher elevations and be aware of active wildfire season; check CAL FIRE before heading out. Winter can bring snow above 3,000 feet, and chains are sometimes required on Highway 32 and Highway 36 toward Lassen. Pro tip: drive uphill in the morning when traffic is light and cooler temps are easier on the engine, and always top off fuel and water before leaving Chico.
roads.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Forest Ranch?
You'll find a great range. Private parks like Almond Tree RV Park in Chico and Rolling Hills Casino RV Park (about 45 minutes northwest off I-5) offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and showers. Lassen National Forest sites like Cherry Hill and Butte Meadows are more rustic with potable water, vault toilets, fire rings, and bear boxes, but no hookups. Lassen Volcanic National Park's Manzanita Lake Campground has potable water, flush toilets, and a dump station, but no hookups. Most Forest Ranch area parks have a dump station and fresh-water fill on site. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks in Chico before heading up to the forest sites.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Forest Ranch?
More than you might think. Most Forest Ranch RV rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, a dining area that converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for travel. Larger Class C and Class A motorhomes often add a generator, outdoor TV, awning, and bunk beds, great for a family RV trip Forest Ranch parents will appreciate. Wi-Fi varies and cell signal is spotty east of town, so plan to disconnect a bit. Check the listing's amenities list on RVezy and message the host if you need specific gear like a generator for boondocking in Lassen National Forest.
fs.usda.gov/lassenWhat add-ons can I get and how does pickup work?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Popular add-ons for an RV rental Forest Ranch trip include linens and towels ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, camp chairs, propane fire pits, and pet packages, all visible on the listing page. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Forest Ranch, Chico, or Paradise, where they will do a 30 to 45-minute walkthrough. Many hosts also offer RV delivery Forest Ranch travelers love, dropping the rig at your campground for a flat fee. Mileage allowances range from 100 miles a day to unlimited. Confirm pickup time, return time, and any cleaning expectations in writing through the RVezy chat so there are no surprises at drop-off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Forest%20Ranch%2C%20CaliforniaHow do payment and the security deposit work?
It is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment at the start of the trip, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and it is released after return assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. The protection plan you selected at checkout covers most accidental damage. Do a thorough video walkaround at pickup and drop-off, note the fuel and propane levels, and message it to your host through the RVezy app. That simple step is the easiest way to ensure your deposit is returned quickly after your Forest Ranch RV trip.
