Camping near Frazier Park, California
Frazier Park sits in the Tejon Pass at roughly 4,600 feet of elevation, just off the Interstate 5 corridor between Los Angeles and the southern San Joaquin Valley. The town is one of the Mountain Communities of the Tejon Pass and serves as a convenient base for trips into Los Padres National Forest and the off-highway vehicle terrain at Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area.
Most campgrounds within easy reach of Frazier Park are inside Hungry Valley SVRA, a 19,000-acre unit managed by the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. The park spans elevations from about 3,000 to nearly 6,000 feet and contains more than 130 miles of trails for motorcycles, ATVs, dune buggies, and 4x4 vehicles. Semi-developed campgrounds inside the park include Honey Valley Group - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, Upper Scrub Oaks - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, Lower Scrub Oaks - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, Smith Forks - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, and Alkilik - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area. Sites are primitive and oriented toward OHV users, with shade ramadas, picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets but no hookups.
Things to do in Frazier Park
Off-highway riding is the headline activity. Hungry Valley SVRA offers more than 130 miles of marked trails graded for every skill level, ridden by motorcycles, ATVs, dune buggies, and 4x4 vehicles. Open-riding areas cover broad sections of the park where travel is not restricted to designated trails. Non-riders can hike park roads, photograph spring wildflowers, or stargaze from the higher campgrounds.
Beyond the SVRA, day trips reach Pyramid Lake for boating and fishing, Los Padres National Forest for hiking on Mount Pinos and Frazier Mountain, and Fort Tejon State Historic Park for a short history stop off I-5. The community of Frazier Park itself has small grocery stores, fuel, and propane, useful for RV resupply before heading into the back country.

December - February

Elevation drives the calendar here. Hungry Valley SVRA sits between 3,000 and 6,000 feet, occasional snowfall occurs during winter, and summers are typically hot, dry, and dusty. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild daytime temperatures and lower fire risk.
Winter brings the wettest months, with most annual precipitation falling between December and February. Cold nights are common at elevation, and storms can briefly close trails or coat the high ground in snow. Spring opens with wildflower blooms across the Gorman hills and along park roads, peaking from March into May depending on the water year. Summer days regularly push into the 90s Fahrenheit at lower elevations, and red-flag fire weather is frequent across the Tejon Pass. Recent wildfire activity has scorched portions of Hungry Valley SVRA, and recovery work has kept some trails and camping areas closed on a rolling basis. Visitors should check current park status before traveling, since reopening conditions and capacity limits can change with little notice.
Booking and how to reserve
Hungry Valley SVRA operates primarily on a first-come, first-served basis. Individual semi-developed sites at campgrounds such as Upper Scrub Oaks - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, Lower Scrub Oaks - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, Smith Forks - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, and Alkilik - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area cannot be reserved in advance. Fees are paid at the entrance kiosk on arrival.
The exception is Honey Valley Group - Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, which is bookable through ReserveCalifornia and is intended for organized gatherings, club events, group camping, and similar uses. Special event permits for organized activities must be applied for at least 30 days in advance. For holiday weekends, OHV events, and spring wildflower peaks, arrive early in the day to secure a site, and confirm current trail and camping status with the park before driving in.
What to expect at Frazier Park campgrounds
Expect dust, wind, and OHV noise. Hungry Valley is an active off-highway vehicle park, and most campgrounds sit close to the trail network. Sites are dirt pads with shade ramadas, picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the SVRA campgrounds, so RVers should arrive with full fresh tanks and empty waste tanks.
Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Open ground fires and firewood collection are not allowed, so visitors must buy firewood locally. Cell coverage is spotty inside the park, and the nearest full services, including groceries, fuel, and propane, are in Frazier Park, Lebec, and Gorman along I-5. Summer fire restrictions can further limit open flames, so check current rules before lighting a campfire.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Frazier Park, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Frazier Park, CA?
RV rental in Frazier Park is one of the more affordable ways to access the Los Padres National Forest, with most rentals on RVezy ranging from about $95 to $185 per night for travel trailers and $150 to $275 per night for Class C motorhomes. Because Frazier Park sits just off Interstate 5 between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, many hosts cater to weekend mountain getaways, so midweek pickups (Sunday through Thursday) often unlock the cheapest RV rental in Frazier Park. To save more, filter by older travel trailers, book in shoulder months like April or October, and message hosts about multi-night discounts. Pro tip: a 3-night Mt. Pinos stargazing trip often costs less than two nights at a coastal park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Frazier%20Park%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Frazier Park?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Frazier Park, California. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or RV endorsement is required for any of the motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers listed on RVezy here, even for larger Class A or Class C rigs. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you fly in, then pair it with your home license. Within an hour, you can be cruising up Frazier Mountain Park Road toward the pines.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-07/What protection is included when I book an RV rental in Frazier Park?
Every RV rental in Frazier Park booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 33 or the Mt. Pinos summit road with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), picking the tier that matches your comfort. The plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip up to the limits of the tier you select, giving you meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on a forest road or at a windy Lockwood Valley campsite. Paired with included roadside support, your Frazier Park RV trip stays low-stress, even if it is your first time behind the wheel of a motorhome.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is RVezy's cancellation policy for Frazier Park bookings?
Booking a motorhome rental in Frazier Park is low-risk thanks to RVezy's platform-wide cancellation policy. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation terms, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have a built-in window to firm up plans. Refund eligibility after that grace period depends on how far out your trip is and the policy tier on the booking. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides credits, and the support team works with you directly on situations like wildfire closures affecting Los Padres National Forest. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best mountain rigs for summer weekends, knowing the grace period has you covered if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Frazier Park RV trip?
Absolutely, Frazier Park is one of Southern California's most dog-friendly mountain escapes, and finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Frazier Park is easy on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page to see hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats and other pets too). Once you are here, leashed dogs are welcome on most Los Padres National Forest trails, including the Mt. Pinos Nordic Base trails and the Chumash Wilderness route toward Sawmill Mountain. Many local campgrounds like McGill and Chuchupate allow leashed pets at the site. Pro tip: pack extra water bowls, summer afternoons at 5,000+ feet still get into the 80s and dogs dehydrate fast on the trail.
fs.usda.gov/lpnfCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Frazier Park?
Yes, RV delivery in Frazier Park is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into LAX or Hollywood Burbank Airport and do not want to tow anything up the Grapevine. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up your RV at popular spots like McGill Campground, Mt. Pinos Campground, or a private property in Lake of the Woods or Pine Mountain Club. They will level it, hook up utilities where available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Look for the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your campsite number. It is the closest thing to a turnkey motorhome rental in Frazier Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106594-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a Frazier Park RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of range for a great Frazier Park RV trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, which easily covers a loop to Mt. Pinos (about 20 miles), Pyramid Lake (25 miles), or Fort Tejon State Historic Park (10 miles). Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect if you are planning a bigger swing through the Central Coast or down to Ojai (about 60 miles south on Highway 33). Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, and each listing shows the policy clearly before you book. Pro tip: if you are planning a long road trip from Frazier Park to Sequoia or Death Valley, filter for unlimited-mileage rigs to keep the budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Frazier%20Park%2C%20CaliforniaWhat are the best campgrounds near Frazier Park for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Frazier Park. The best campgrounds near Frazier Park include McGill Campground on Mt. Pinos Highway (about 8 miles up at roughly 7,400 feet, with paved spurs that fit rigs up to about 27 feet), Chuchupate Campground (sites at about 6,200 feet, open roughly May through November, max around 24-foot RV), and Mt. Pinos Campground for cooler high-elevation nights. For full hookups, head down to Bakersfield-area parks like A Country RV Park (about 45 miles north) or Orange Grove RV Park. Pro tip: forest campgrounds here are dry camping only, so top off fresh water in Frazier Park village and arrive with full tanks ready for stargazing.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234039When is the best time to visit Frazier Park in an RV?
Frazier Park is a true four-season destination, but the sweet spot for an RV rental in Frazier Park is May through October, when forest campgrounds are open and Mt. Pinos is snow-free. June and September are the most pleasant months, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and crisp 50-degree nights perfect for campfires. July and August can hit the low 90s in the valley but stay 15 to 20 degrees cooler up at 8,800-foot Mt. Pinos, making it a popular escape from LA heat. Winters are mild but chilly, with December lows around 32°F and occasional snow above 6,000 feet. Pro tip: aim for a new-moon weekend in September for legendary stargazing at the Mt. Pinos summit lot.
weather.gov/lox/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Frazier Park?
You're going to do great, Frazier Park is actually one of the easier spots in California to start your RV journey. Most first time renting an RV here means cruising up a wide, well-graded Frazier Mountain Park Road off Interstate 5, with clear signage and gentle grades compared to coastal mountain routes. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, leveling, holding tanks, propane, and the generator, so you'll leave confident. Choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, both handle like a large van or pickup. Pro tip: do your first night at McGill Campground (only 8 miles up) so you can practice setup with daylight and cell service.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook/What happens if my RV breaks down during my Frazier Park trip?
You are covered, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, which is a real lifesaver when you are parked at 8,000 feet on Mt. Pinos or off Lockwood Valley Road with patchy cell service. One call gets you help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app and usually local enough to answer questions fast. Pro tip: snap a photo of your propane and battery panel during your walkthrough so you can text the host if a warning light pops up. Most issues at this elevation are simple: low batteries, tripped breakers, or a propane regulator that needs a reset.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat are the best road trip destinations from Frazier Park?
Frazier Park is a fantastic launch pad for an RV road trip from Frazier Park to some of California's most iconic landscapes. Top picks include Pyramid Lake for boating and swimming (25 miles south on I-5), Sequoia National Forest and the Trail of 100 Giants (about 110 miles north), Pismo Beach for coastal dunes camping (about 150 miles west), Ojai and the Channel Islands gateway via scenic Highway 33 (about 60 miles south), and Death Valley National Park (around 230 miles northeast). Cross-border travel to Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals, but the entire western US is open to you. Pro tip: tackle Highway 33 in daylight, the twisty Pine Mountain section is gorgeous but slow with a big rig.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=585How much should I budget for fuel on a Frazier Park RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's predictable. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 mpg, travel trailers towed by your own truck pull that down to 10 to 14 mpg, and smaller campervans can stretch to 14 to 18 mpg. Gas in Frazier Park and Lebec typically runs $0.20 to $0.50 above the California average, so top off in Bakersfield (about 45 miles north) or Castaic (40 miles south) before climbing the Grapevine. A typical 3-night, 250-mile loop around Mt. Pinos and Pyramid Lake costs roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: turn off the generator when you're plugged in or just hanging out, it sips gas faster than you'd expect.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Frazier Park?
Book early, summer weekends fill fast. Forest Service campgrounds like McGill and Chuchupate near Frazier Park are reservable on Recreation.gov up to six months in advance, and prime Friday and Saturday nights in June through August often sell out the day reservations open. For mid-week or shoulder-season trips (April, May, September, October), 2 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Some sites are first-come, first-served, so arriving Thursday afternoon gives you a great shot. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target Saturday and log into Recreation.gov at 7 a.m. Pacific, that's when the new inventory drops and the best Mt. Pinos sites disappear within minutes.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234039What are driving conditions like in and around Frazier Park?
Driving in Frazier Park is straightforward for RVs, with one important caveat: Interstate 5 climbs over the Tejon Pass (the Grapevine) at 4,144 feet just east of town, so plan to take it slow up the grades and use lower gears on the descent. Local roads like Frazier Mountain Park Road, Cuddy Valley Road, and Mt. Pinos Highway are paved and well-maintained, with sweeping curves rather than tight switchbacks. Watch for strong crosswinds in the pass (especially afternoons), occasional winter snow above 5,000 feet, and the rare summer thunderstorm. Pro tip: check Caltrans QuickMap before you roll out, the agency posts live closures and chain controls for I-5 over the Grapevine, which can save you hours in winter storms.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Frazier Park offer for RVs?
Expect a true mountain camping experience. Most campgrounds near Frazier Park (McGill, Chuchupate, Mt. Pinos, Campo Alto) are Forest Service sites with vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and potable water at central spigots, but no hookups, so you'll run on your RV's batteries, fresh tank, and propane. For full hookups and dump stations, head to Frazier Park RV Resort in town or down to Bakersfield-area parks. The closest reliable RV dump station is in Lebec just off I-5. Pro tip: arrive with full fresh water and empty gray/black tanks. You can usually get 3 to 4 nights of off-grid comfort in a typical Class C before needing services, which is perfect for a Mt. Pinos weekend.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/lpnf/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat's included inside a typical Frazier Park RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how loaded most rigs are. A typical campervan rental Frazier Park or Class C motorhome on RVezy comes with sleeping for 2 to 8, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and roof AC, dinette and lounge seating with seatbelts for travel, and usually a TV plus a generator or solar setup for off-grid power at Mt. Pinos. WiFi is hit-or-miss in the forest, but many hosts include a cellular hotspot as an add-on. Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are often included, just check the listing's amenities list. Pro tip: message your host before booking if you need specific items like a CPAP-compatible inverter or a high chair.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/rvsWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect with my Frazier Park RV rental?
Hosts in Frazier Park offer some of the most useful add-ons in the RVezy network. Common extras include delivery and setup ($2 to $4 per mile is typical), generator usage packages, bedding and towel kits ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Frazier Park, Lake of the Woods, or Pine Mountain Club, with a 60-to-90 minute walkthrough that covers every system. Look for Instant Book listings if you want to lock in dates without waiting for host approval. Pro tip: bundling delivery with a campsite drop at McGill saves you the climb in an unfamiliar rig and frees up your car for trailheads.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/lpnf/recreationHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Frazier Park RV rental?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, no cash, no awkward exchanges with the host. You pay your rental total securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, separate from your booking payment. As long as you return the rig in the same condition, with fuel and tanks per the listing's terms, the hold is released within a few days of trip end. Take time-stamped photos and a quick video during your walkthrough at pickup and again at return to avoid any surprises. Pro tip: confirm fuel and dump-station expectations with the host so you can plan your final stop in Lebec or Bakersfield.
