Camping near Garberville, California
Garberville sits in southern Humboldt County along U.S. Highway 101, about 200 miles north of San Francisco and 70 miles south of Eureka. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the South Fork Eel River corridor and the southern redwood parks, with most campgrounds clustered within a 10-mile radius along the 101.
The closest full-service RV park is Benbow KOA Holiday, located just off Highway 101 next to an 18-hole golf course. Adjacent to it, Benbow Lake State Recreation Area offers a more rustic state-park experience along the Eel River. About seven miles south on 101, Richardson Grove State Park protects an old-growth coast redwood grove along the Eel River and operates three campgrounds: Huckleberry, Madrone, and Oak Flat. North of Garberville near Redway, Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park provides year-round hookups on the Eel River, a short drive from the Avenue of the Giants. Further up the Avenue, Giant Redwoods RV and Cabin Destination in Myers Flat offers riverfront sites surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
Things to do around Garberville
The Avenue of the Giants scenic drive begins about 20 miles north of Garberville and winds through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, with multiple pullouts and short interpretive loops suited to RV travelers. Richardson Grove State Park has flat, family-friendly trails through old-growth redwoods, including self-guided nature loops past some of the park's largest trees. The South Fork of the Eel River runs alongside Highway 101 and offers summer swimming holes, shallow wading areas, and seasonal paddling near Benbow and Myers Flat. Anglers fish the Eel for steelhead in the winter. The Lost Coast and Shelter Cove sit about 25 miles west via the Briceland-Thorn Road, though that route is not RV-friendly. Downtown Garberville and Redway have grocery stores, fuel, propane, and laundromats for trip resupply.

The practical RV season runs from late spring through early fall. State park campgrounds operate on a seasonal calendar: at Richardson Grove State Park, Huckleberry and the Dawn Redwood Group Camp fully reopen the week before Memorial Day weekend and close after the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, while Oak Flat is open mid-June through mid-September. Madrone Campground is open year-round, operating as walk-in only with self-registration during the off-season from early September through late May. Summer brings warm, dry days that are ideal for river swimming, with peak demand from late June through Labor Day when sites at Benbow KOA Holiday, Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park, and Giant Redwoods RV and Cabin Destination fill weeks in advance.
Spring and fall are quieter, with green hillsides in April and May and mild, less crowded conditions in September and October. Winters are wet, with December the wettest month, and storm-driven wind events with gusts above 55 mph can trigger temporary park closures. Snow is rare at valley elevations.
How to book a campsite
California state parks in the Garberville area use ReserveCalifornia. Sites at Richardson Grove State Park and Benbow Lake State Recreation Area can be reserved up to six months in advance from the current date on a rolling window, and summer weekends typically book the morning they open. The RV length limit at Richardson Grove is 30 feet, with a 24-foot trailer limit, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking. The park's maximum stay is 15 nights per calendar year. Private parks including Benbow KOA Holiday, Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park, and Giant Redwoods RV and Cabin Destination take reservations directly through their websites or by phone, generally with more flexible length and stay limits than the state parks. For holiday weekends, book three to four months ahead.
What to expect on arrival
Cell service is unreliable south of Garberville. Richardson Grove State Park has limited to no cell or internet service inside the park, so guests should print or write down reservation details before arrival. The Highway 101 corridor through the redwoods has tight curves and low-hanging branches in places, and the state parks restrict larger rigs by length. Most state-park sites do not have hookups, while Benbow KOA Holiday, Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park, and Giant Redwoods RV and Cabin Destination offer full or partial hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Black bears are present throughout the area, so food storage rules apply at all campgrounds. Dogs are welcome at most sites but are not allowed on trails in Richardson Grove State Park except for service animals. Fuel and groceries are easiest in Garberville and Redway.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Garberville, CA
How much does an RV rental in Garberville cost, and when can I save the most?
Renting an RV in Garberville is surprisingly affordable for one of Northern California's most iconic redwood destinations. Travel trailers on RVezy typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes range $175 to $275 per night, with weekly discounts common. For a cheap RV rental in Garberville, target the shoulder seasons of late April to mid-May or mid-September through October, when redwood weather is still beautiful and nightly rates drop noticeably. Pro tip: peak pricing hits in July and August when Avenue of the Giants traffic peaks, so booking two to three months ahead locks in better Humboldt County rates.
visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/humboldt-county/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Garberville, California?
Good news, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Garberville for virtually every rig on RVezy. California allows a standard Class C license to operate any housecar 40 feet or shorter, which covers travel trailers, campervans, Class B motorhomes, and Class C motorhomes that make up the vast majority of listings. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to pick up the keys and head straight for the redwoods.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/What protection and roadside support comes with my RVezy booking in Garberville?
Every RV rental in Garberville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered before you pull onto Highway 101. During checkout you choose the protection tier that fits your trip, with several levels available so you can match coverage to your comfort and budget. If you get a flat near Richardson Grove or need a battery jump at Benbow KOA, one call dispatches help. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my Garberville plans change, can I cancel my RVezy booking?
Yes. RVezy uses a standardized cancellation policy that applies across all listings, so the rules are consistent no matter which host you book with in Garberville. Refunds are based on how far in advance of your trip you cancel, and the full policy is available in the RVezy Help Center so you can review it before you confirm. Because the policy is platform-wide rather than host-defined, booking your Garberville RV trip months ahead to lock in summer dates stays low-risk. If wildfire road closures or winter storms along Highway 101 affect your trip, contact RVezy support for guidance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Garberville RV trip?
Absolutely, Garberville is one of the most dog-loving corners of California, and pet-friendly RV rental in Garberville is easy to find on RVezy. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome four-legged guests, and message the host before booking if you have a larger breed or multiple pets. Once you arrive, dogs are welcome on-leash at most private RV parks like Benbow KOA and Dean Creek Resort, and they can join you along the South Fork Eel River. Heads up: dogs aren't permitted on most trails inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park, but the paved Avenue of the Giants pullouts and Founders Grove parking areas are dog-friendly for short stops and photos.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Garberville?
Yes, RV delivery in Garberville is a fantastic option, especially if you're nervous about driving a big rig along Highway 101's winding curves through the redwoods. Many RVezy hosts offer delivery and setup directly to popular spots like Benbow KOA, Richardson Grove State Park, Burlington Campground in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, or even a private property along the Eel River. The host parks the RV, levels it, connects hookups, and walks you through every system, so you can simply show up with groceries and start your trip. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and message hosts to confirm the delivery fee, which typically scales with distance from their home base.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425How far can I drive, and what's the mileage policy on most rentals?
You have plenty of range for a Garberville RV trip. Hosts set their own mileage policies on RVezy, and many offer generous allowances of 100 to 150 free miles per day, with some campervan listings even offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for exploring the North Coast. To put that in perspective: it's 8 miles north to the start of the Avenue of the Giants, 23 miles west to the rugged Lost Coast at Shelter Cove, 70 miles north to Eureka, and 200 miles south to San Francisco. Any extra miles beyond your daily allowance are charged at the per-mile rate listed on the booking page, so there are no surprises.
visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/humboldt-county/Where are the best campgrounds near Garberville for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Garberville. Top picks include Benbow KOA Holiday on Benbow Drive, which has full hookups, a golf course, and pool right along the South Fork Eel River; Richardson Grove State Park (8 miles south on Highway 101) with old-growth redwoods and sites up to 30 feet; Dean Creek Resort in nearby Redway with full hookups and riverside sites; Burlington Campground inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park near the visitor center; and Giant Redwoods RV & Cabin Destination in Myers Flat. Pro tip: state park sites release six months in advance on ReserveCalifornia and the summer slots vanish fast, so book Burlington and Richardson Grove early.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time to plan an RV trip from Garberville?
Garberville has a Mediterranean climate, so the window for great weather is wider than you might expect. The sweet spot runs late May through mid-October, when daytime highs sit between 70°F and 85°F and rainfall is nearly zero, which is ideal for redwood hikes and Eel River swimming. June and September are the local insider favorites: warm enough for shorts, cool enough at night for a campfire, and far less crowded than peak July and August. Winter trips (December through February) are still doable with highs around 54°F and very few visitors, just expect rain (Garberville gets roughly 60 inches annually) and pick a rental with a strong furnace.
weather.gov/eka/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay on the redwood roads?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV around Garberville is genuinely manageable. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slides, leveling, and the dashboard, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. Highway 101 through Humboldt County is a divided four-lane freeway with gentle grades, so the drive in and out is straightforward. The famously twisty section is the 31-mile Avenue of the Giants (State Route 254), but it's flat, slow-speed, and built for sightseers. Pro tip: start with a campervan or smaller Class C under 25 feet for your first Humboldt trip, and you'll feel confident within an hour behind the wheel.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/scenic-highwaysWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my Garberville trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed, which is reassuring on remote stretches like Mattole Road to the Lost Coast or quiet sections of Avenue of the Giants. Your host is a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like resetting the inverter, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: take photos of every system during your pickup walkthrough so you have a reference if cell service drops near Shelter Cove.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Garberville?
Garberville is the perfect launchpad for a Northern California RV road trip from Garberville. Top routes: drive 8 miles north to the Avenue of the Giants for a 31-mile redwood tour ending near Pepperwood; head 23 miles west to Shelter Cove and the Lost Coast for black-sand beaches; cruise 70 miles north to Eureka and Old Town's Victorian charm; venture 145 miles further north to Redwood National Park near Crescent City; or drive 200 miles south to San Francisco via the Pacific Coast Highway. Cross-border note: traveling into Oregon is welcome with most hosts, but trips into Mexico aren't permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance restrictions. Message hosts to confirm out-of-state plans before booking.
nps.gov/redw/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Garberville RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's predictable once you plan. Class C motorhomes around Garberville average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), campervans get 14 to 18 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg combined). Gas prices in rural Humboldt County tend to run higher than statewide averages, so fill up in Eureka or Ukiah before heading deep into the redwoods. For a 5-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $200 to $260 in fuel at current California prices. Pro tip: the Chevron in Garberville and the Renner station in Redway are reliable refuel stops, and Eureka has the cheapest diesel north of Ukiah.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground near Garberville?
For summer trips, book your campground as soon as you book your motorhome rental in Garberville. California State Park campgrounds like Burlington, Hidden Springs, and Richardson Grove release reservations six months ahead through ReserveCalifornia, and weekend sites for July and August can fill within days of opening. Private parks like Benbow KOA, Dean Creek Resort, and Giant Redwoods RV and Cabin Destination book through their own websites and usually have more availability, but still aim for two to three months ahead in peak season. Insider tip: midweek arrivals from Sunday through Wednesday are easier to score and often cheaper per night.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Garberville?
Driving around Garberville is generally relaxed once you know the terrain. Highway 101 is a smooth divided freeway through town with a 65 mph limit, dropping to 45 to 55 mph in the redwood narrows around Richardson Grove where the giant trees crowd the road. The Avenue of the Giants is flat and slow (35 to 45 mph) with tight pullouts, perfectly manageable in any RV under 35 feet. Watch for: low-hanging branches on side roads, occasional fog in early mornings near the Eel River, and very limited cell service between Garberville and Leggett. Pro tip: avoid the narrow Briceland-Thorn Road to Shelter Cove in anything over 25 feet, and stick to Shelter Cove Road instead.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Garberville?
Campground amenities vary by type, but you'll find solid options for every style. Private parks like Benbow KOA, Dean Creek Resort, and Richardson Grove RV Park offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and propane refills, with dump stations on-site. State park campgrounds inside Humboldt Redwoods (Burlington, Hidden Springs, Albee Creek) are more rustic: picnic tables, fire rings, bear lockers, flush toilets, and potable water spigots, but no hookups and dense redwood canopy that blocks satellite and solar. The closest public dump station and freshwater fill is at Benbow KOA or Dean Creek Resort, both offering day-use access for a small fee. Bring an extension hose just in case.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425What's included inside a typical Garberville RV rental?
Most RVs on RVezy come fully equipped so you can roll straight from pickup to your campsite. Expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and bunks (sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, plus a furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many listings also include a generator for off-grid stays at Burlington or Albee Creek campgrounds, TV with DVD, and outdoor awnings. Wi-Fi and cell boosters are common in newer rigs (helpful since Humboldt County cell coverage is patchy). Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specifics like a propane fire pit for redwood evenings.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21833What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Garberville offer plenty of flexibility to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and kitchen kits ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $25), bike racks, generators, propane fire pits, and pet packages for that pet-friendly RV rental in Garberville. Delivery and setup is the most popular extra, often $2 to $5 per mile from the host's home base, with full setup at Benbow KOA or Richardson Grove typically $100 to $200 flat. Pickup and dropoff happen at the host's location unless delivery is arranged, and standard pickup time is around 2 to 3 PM with a noon return. Pro tip: bundle linens, a generator, and delivery and your first-time RV experience becomes nearly turnkey.
visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/humboldt-county/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is handled securely through the platform, so you never hand cash to the host. You pay your total (rental, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons) by credit card when you book. A refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is placed as a hold on your card shortly before pickup, then released after return assuming there is no damage or excess cleaning. To keep your Garberville rental smooth, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup with photos and a short video, and return the RV with a full fuel tank and emptied tanks to get your deposit back without issues.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in Garberville besides campgrounds?
Beyond traditional campgrounds, you have a few solid options for where to park an RV in Garberville. The Garberville Redway Chamber area allows brief daytime parking for sightseeing and grocery runs at Ray's Food Place. There's no Walmart in Garberville (the nearest is in Eureka, 70 miles north, which permits overnight RV stays with manager approval). For a more adventurous family RV trip near Garberville, dispersed camping is allowed on parts of the Six Rivers National Forest and along certain BLM-managed Lost Coast pull-outs, free of charge with a 14-day limit. Pro tip: always check posted signs and avoid overnight parking on city streets in Garberville itself, which is prohibited.
