Camping near Graeagle, California
Graeagle sits in eastern Plumas County along the Middle Fork Feather River in the northern Sierra Nevada, at roughly 4,400 feet of elevation. The town is a census-designated place that serves as a practical base for the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, Plumas National Forest, and the Gold Lake Highway corridor.
The campground mix runs from full-hookup RV parks in town to forested state-park sites a short drive up Johnsville Road. Upper Jamison Campground at Plumas-Eureka State Park sits at about 5,200 feet, accepts RVs and trailers up to roughly 30 feet, and offers flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station. Lakes Basin Campground, about 9 miles southwest off the Gold Lake Highway, sits at around 6,400 feet with creekside sites. In town, Movin' West RV Park, Little Bear RV Park, and Clio's Rivers Edge RV Park offer full hookups.
Movin' West RV Park, Little Bear RV Park, Clio's Rivers Edge RV Park, and Dream Catcher Campground and Lodge cover the hookup-and-amenity end of the spectrum, while Plumas-Eureka State Park covers the rustic, in-the-pines experience five miles up the road from town.
Things to do around Graeagle
Plumas-Eureka State Park is the local headline attraction. The park is located five miles from Graeagle on Johnsville Road and is situated at the foot of Eureka Peak, originally called Gold Mountain. Elevation ranges from 4,720 feet at the visitors center and campground up to 7,447 feet at Eureka Peak, with trails that start in towering pines and fir forests and meander up to high granite lakes, waterfalls, and into the adjacent Lakes Basin Recreation Area. Visitors can tour the park museum, the Moriarty House, and the historic mining area, including the Mohawk Stamp Mill and blacksmith shop.
The Gold Lake Highway opens access to a string of alpine lakes. Hikers find direct trailhead access at Plumas-Eureka State Park Campground, where paths lead to Jamison Lake and other backcountry destinations within three miles of the sites. Fishing, paddling, and swimming are common at Gold Lake, Sardine Lakes, and Lake Davis. Graeagle itself offers golf, a swimmable millpond, and walkable shops and restaurants.

The usable camping window is short and tied to elevation. Most options operate from May through October, with the higher-elevation sites opening later as snow clears. The Upper Jamison Creek Campground at Plumas-Eureka closes to camping on Labor Day and reopens on or before the Memorial Day weekend the following year. Movin' West RV Park operates seasonally from May through October and accepts reservations.
Summer days are warm and dry with cool nights. Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for RV camping in Graeagle, when daytime highs are in the 75 to 90 degree Fahrenheit range and nights cool into the 40s. September is a strong shoulder-season choice. Crowds thin out, aspens start turning gold along the Gold Lake Highway, and the lakes are still warm enough to swim.
Winter shuts most of the area down. Graeagle averages 54 inches of snow per year, and the Plumas-Eureka campground stays closed from fall through late spring. Fire restrictions are common in mid-to-late summer.
How to book a site near Graeagle
Reservation systems differ by campground type. For Plumas-Eureka State Park, bookings go through ReserveCalifornia. Reservations are made through ReserveCalifornia.com or by calling 800-444-7275, and are available six months in advance of the arrival date. Summer weekends often book out within minutes of the rolling window opening, so set a calendar reminder for the exact morning your dates become available.
Private parks book direct. Movin' West RV Park, Little Bear RV Park, Clio's Rivers Edge RV Park, and Dream Catcher Campground and Lodge take reservations through their own offices or websites rather than through a state portal. Booking ahead is strongly recommended for Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
What to expect on site
Hookup levels vary sharply between private parks and the state park. Movin' West RV Park offers 47 sites, accepts big rigs up to 60 feet, and provides 20/30 amp electric, water and sewer hookups, cable TV, showers, laundry, a dump station, and firewood. Plumas-Eureka is the opposite. Camping at Plumas-Eureka is primitive, with no water, electric, or sewage hookups. Water spigots, a sanitary dump station, and modern restrooms with flush toilets are available, and each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and a bear-proof food storage container.
Rig size matters at the state park. Sites accommodate trailers up to 24 feet and motor homes up to 28 feet. Black bears are active in the Lakes Basin region, and bear-resistant food storage is mandatory. Fire restrictions can override posted campfire policies during dry months, so always check current conditions on arrival.

Your host will level the rig, hook up power and water if available, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end of your stay. parks.ca.gov/?page_id=507What is the best time of year for a Graeagle RV trip?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for RV camping in Graeagle, when daytime highs are in the 75 to 90 degree Fahrenheit range and nights cool into the 40s, perfect sleeping weather at elevation. Plumas-Eureka State Park's campground typically opens around Memorial Day weekend and closes on Labor Day, while Lakes Basin Campground generally runs from late May through late September. September is the local insider favorite, the crowds thin out, aspens start turning gold along the Gold Lakes Highway, and the lakes are still warm enough to swim. Winter brings deep snow and the Gold Lake Highway closes, but campervan rentals in Graeagle with shore power can still enjoy snow-covered Plumas County stays.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=507I have never driven an RV before. Is Graeagle a good place to start?
Graeagle is actually one of the friendliest first time renting an RV experiences in California. Traffic is light, the town is tiny, and most campgrounds are reached by paved two-lane roads like Highway 89 and Johnsville Road. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, propane, the freshwater system, the dump valves, and the awning. You can message your host any time during your trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a phone call away. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer under 25 feet for your first Graeagle trip, both handle mountain curves easily.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on the Gold Lake Highway, a dead battery at Upper Salmon Lake, or lock the keys inside near Mohawk, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. For non-emergency support before, during, or after your Graeagle RV trip, the RVezy customer support team is reachable through the Help Center. Keep your host's number and the roadside number saved offline, because cell coverage can be patchy in Plumas National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, you can absolutely take an RV rental in California across state lines into Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, or beyond, and Reno is only about 70 miles east of Graeagle so a quick state-line run is common. Travel into Canada may be allowed with some hosts, just message them first so you can confirm and so they can update insurance accordingly. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance and roadside coverage do not extend there. Popular RV road trips from Graeagle include the Feather River Scenic Byway loop, Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, and a Nevada hot springs run through Pyramid Lake and Black Rock Desert.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C motorhome, 14 to 18 for a Class B campervan, and budget for your tow vehicle plus 1 to 2 MPG penalty if you are pulling a travel trailer. As of 2026, California gas prices in the Graeagle area typically run higher than the national average, so fuel up in Reno or Truckee before heading into Plumas County when possible. For a typical 4-night family RV trip from Graeagle exploring Lake Tahoe and the Lakes Basin (about 250 total miles), expect around $120 to $220 in fuel. Pro tip: the Chevron in Portola, 10 miles east, is usually a bit cheaper than stations closer to the resort areas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Graeagle?

For private parks like Movin' West, Little Bear, and Clio's Rivers Edge, call directly two to three months ahead. Insider tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) often have last-minute openings even in peak summer.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/231963What are the driving conditions like around Graeagle?
Driving conditions around Graeagle are very RV-friendly in summer, Highway 89 and Highway 70 through the Feather River Canyon are well-maintained two-lane mountain roads with gentle grades for the most part. Watch for narrow shoulders, occasional rockfall in the canyon, and afternoon thunderstorms in July and August that can briefly slick the pavement. The Gold Lake Highway (Forest Route 24) is paved but winding and closes seasonally with snow, typically from November into May. Use lower gears on descents to save your brakes, especially coming down from Plumas-Eureka. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave so your Graeagle RV trip starts with a clear picture of current conditions.

Many motorhome rentals in Graeagle include a generator (handy for boondocking at dispersed sites in Plumas National Forest), an outdoor speaker, and an awning. WiFi and TV vary by listing, and cell signal can be spotty around Gold Lake, so download maps and shows before you head out. Each listing's amenities list shows exactly what is included.
fs.usda.gov/r05/plumas/recreation/lakes-basin-recreation-areaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Graeagle hosts offer a great mix of add-ons that make your trip easier. Common options include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes ($25 to $60), bike racks, kayak or paddleboard add-ons (perfect for Gold Lake and Sardine Lakes), generators, propane fire pits, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a meeting point near Graeagle, Blairsden, or Portola, and many hosts offer RV delivery in Graeagle and the surrounding Lost Sierra region for a flat fee.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2354How does the security deposit and payment work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, with no cash or paper checks changing hands with the host. You pay for your booking with a credit or debit card right on the site, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold separate from your booking payment, with the amount shown clearly on the listing. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, with the fuel and propane levels you started with, and free of damage, the hold is released after your trip. Tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff to keep your Graeagle RV rental experience smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I prep an RV for cold weather in Graeagle?
Winter and shoulder-season trips to Graeagle are absolutely doable and genuinely magical, think snow-dusted pines around Plumas-Eureka and cross-country skiing from the Gold Lake Winter Staging Area. Look for RVezy listings with heated/enclosed tanks, a working propane furnace, and shore power compatibility, then filter for RVs rated for cold weather. Book at a park with full hookups like Movin' West or Feather River RV Park so you can keep electric heat tape on the water hose and stay plugged in. Bring extra propane, wheel chocks for icy pads, and tire chains for Highway 89 (California chain controls are common November through April). Your host will walk you through every winter system at pickup.
