Campgrounds near Hayfork, California
Hayfork sits in southern Trinity County in the heart of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, the largest national forest in California. The town serves as a supply stop for campers heading into the Trinity Alps Wilderness, the South Fork Trinity River corridor, and the main stem of the Trinity River along Highway 299. A local Forest Service ranger district office is based in Hayfork and handles permits, fire restrictions, and road information for the surrounding public lands.
RV-friendly options cluster along Highway 299 to the north, where the Trinity River runs through Big Bar and Del Loma. Strawhouse Resorts and Cafe, Bigfoot Campground And RV Park, Del Loma RV Park and Campground, Flux River Resort, and Pinecove RV Park give travelers a mix of full-hookup sites, riverfront tent pads, cabins, and on-site amenities. Forest Service campgrounds in the same corridor add lower-cost, less-developed alternatives for self-contained rigs.
Things to do near Hayfork
The Trinity River is the main draw. The corridor near Del Loma RV Park and Campground is a popular section for kayaking and whitewater rafting, with commercial outfitters running guided trips under Forest Service permits. Fishing is a year-round activity, with salmon and steelhead seasons drawing anglers in fall and winter. Swimming holes and tubing beaches line the river during summer low flows.
Hikers can access the South Fork National Recreation Trail, which parallels the South Fork Trinity River before climbing into higher country. The Trinity Alps Wilderness offers longer backcountry routes from trailheads west and north of Hayfork. Gold panning, mountain biking on forest roads, and wildlife viewing round out a typical itinerary.

Most developed Forest Service campgrounds in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest operate from roughly May 15 through September 15, with some sites kept open longer as weather permits and reduced services outside that window. Many seasonal water systems are turned off in winter. Summer is the busiest stretch on the Trinity River, with hot, dry days reaching the upper 80s and 90s, cool nights, and reliable river flows for rafting and swimming.
Late spring brings high water and wildflowers but also mud on forest roads. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and the start of salmon and steelhead runs. Wildfire risk peaks from July through October, and smoke from regional fires can push air quality into unhealthy ranges. Winter is wet and cold, with snow at higher elevations and frequent road advisories on Highway 299 over Buckhorn Summit.
How to book a campground near Hayfork
Private parks along Highway 299, including Strawhouse Resorts and Cafe, Bigfoot Campground And RV Park, Del Loma RV Park and Campground, Flux River Resort, and Pinecove RV Park, are typically booked directly through each operator by phone or website. Summer weekends and the salmon and steelhead season fill earliest, so reservations several weeks ahead are recommended.
Forest Service campgrounds inside the Shasta-Trinity National Forest are reservable through Recreation.gov when available, while many smaller sites remain first-come, first-served. Stay limits at improved campgrounds are generally capped at 14 days, and dispersed camping on the forest is limited to 30 days within a one-year period. Travelers should check current fire restrictions and road status with the Hayfork Ranger Station before arrival.
What to expect
Hayfork is rural and remote. Trinity County has no incorporated cities, and services thin out quickly once travelers leave town. Cell coverage is spotty along Highway 299 and inside the canyons, and grocery and fuel stops have limited hours. Travelers should top off fuel, water, and propane in Hayfork, Weaverville, or Redding before heading to more remote sites.
Roads into riverside campgrounds along Highway 299 are paved but winding, with steep grades over Buckhorn Summit between Redding and Weaverville. Larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs should plan for slow travel and use lower gears on descents. Expect black bears, deer, and rattlesnakes in the area, and follow posted food-storage rules. Summer afternoons are hot, but nights cool sharply because of the wide diurnal temperature swing typical of the Trinity basin.

Many RVezy hosts offer delivery and setup straight to your campsite at places like Hayward Flat Campground on Trinity Lake, Big Slide Campground along the Trinity River, or even a friend's driveway in town. They will level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees usually depend on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip, use the Delivery filter on RVezy and message a few hosts to compare quotes, this is especially handy if it is your first time renting an RV.
fs.usda.gov/r05/shasta-trinity/recreation/camping-cabinsHow many miles do I get, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have options, because hosts set their own mileage policies and many offer generous packages or even RV rentals with unlimited mileage on RVezy. Pro tip, start with a smaller Class C motorhome rental in Hayfork or a campervan rental in Hayfork for your first trip, they drive more like a big van than a bus.

Your host is usually quick to respond by message too, since they know their rig best. Pro tip, cell service drops between Hayfork and Weaverville along Highway 3, so download offline maps and screenshot the roadside assistance number before you leave town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Hayfork?
An RV road trip from Hayfork puts you in the heart of Northern California's wildest scenery. Weaverville and historic downtown is just 30 miles north on Highway 3 (about 45 minutes). Trinity Lake for boating and swimming sits about 50 miles north (1.5 hours). Redding and the Sundial Bridge are 61 miles east on Highway 299 (about 1 hour 25 minutes). The Avenue of the Giants and Humboldt Redwoods are roughly 130 miles west (3 hours). For an epic loop, Lassen Volcanic National Park is about 150 miles east (3.5 hours). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but the entire Trinity Scenic Byway is yours to explore. Pro tip, fuel up in Hayfork or Weaverville, gas stations are sparse on Highway 36.
fs.usda.gov/r05/shasta-trinity/recreation/trinity-scenic-bywayWhat kind of gas mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for fuel?
Fuel is easier to budget than you might think for an RV trip from Hayfork. Travel trailers towed by a pickup average 10 to 14 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. With California gas prices in Trinity County typically around $4.80 to $5.40 per gallon, a 300-mile loop to Trinity Lake and back in a Class C might cost $120 to $180 in fuel. Most rigs run on regular unleaded, while some larger motorhomes use diesel. Pro tip, fill up at the Frontier Fuel station in Hayfork or in Weaverville before heading west on Highway 36, where the next reliable pump is over 50 miles away.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Hayfork?
You have more flexibility here than at most California destinations, but booking ahead is still smart. Shasta-Trinity National Forest campgrounds like Hayward Flat, Stoney Point, and Tannery Gulch open reservations on Recreation.gov up to six months in advance, and Trinity Lake sites for July and August fill 3 to 4 months out. Private RV parks such as Hayfork RV Park and Old Lewiston Bridge RV Resort usually have availability 2 to 6 weeks ahead, even in summer. Many smaller forest campgrounds also keep first-come, first-served sites. Pro tip, midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often score lakefront spots that vanish by Friday afternoon, making them a hidden gem for a family RV trip in Hayfork.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Hayfork?
The roads around Hayfork are scenic and very RV-friendly once you know the lay of the land. Highway 3 between Hayfork and Weaverville is a paved two-lane road with curves and a few grades, easy to handle at a relaxed pace. Highway 299 (the Trinity Scenic Byway) has wide passing lanes and follows the Trinity River. Highway 36 west toward the coast is more winding and best taken slowly. In winter, occasional snow and ice can affect Highway 3 and Buckhorn Summit on 299, so chains may be required December through March. Avoid narrow Forest Service dirt roads in larger rigs. Pro tip, plan driving days in daylight, deer are common at dawn and dusk along Highway 3.

Old Lewiston Bridge RV Resort and Trinity Alps RV Park in Weaverville offer full hookups and dump stations. National Forest campgrounds like Hayward Flat and Tannery Gulch on Trinity Lake usually have potable water, vault or flush toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables, but no hookups. Air conditioning, furnace, and roof vents come standard, and most rigs sleep 4 to 8 with seatbelts for travel. Many Hayfork-area hosts add a generator, outdoor speakers, awning lights, and a backup camera. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the Trinity Alps, but Starlink-equipped RVs are increasingly common. Pro tip, filter for sleeps count and amenities you actually need, then message the host to confirm details like coffee maker style and bedding included.

Mileage policies and pet rules are set per listing and shown clearly on each page. Pro tip, bundle the paddleboard add-on with a Trinity Lake stay, the glassy morning water at Hayward Flat is unforgettable.
fs.usda.gov/r05/shasta-trinity/recreation/recreation-activities/water-activitiesHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Hayfork through RVezy, you pay through the platform, never directly to the host, using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment around the start of your trip and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid surprises, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, respect mileage and generator limits, and return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels you got. Pro tip, ask the host to walk through the existing dings with you on video at pickup, it is the easiest way to keep your Hayfork RV trip stress-free from start to finish.
