Campgrounds and RV parks near Hydesville, CA

The Avenue of the Giants is the headline drive, a parallel route to Highway 101 that threads through Humboldt Redwoods State Park and groves including Founders Grove and Rockefeller Forest. Families can fish, swim, and paddle the Eel and Van Duzen Rivers, with summer water levels generally calmer and warmer. Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park contains the Cheatham Grove, named for Owen R. Cheatham, former chairman of Georgia-Pacific. Day trips reach Ferndale's Victorian Main Street, Eureka's Old Town and waterfront, the Lost Coast beaches west of Honeydew, and the Samoa Dunes. Bike riding on the paved campground loop at Grizzly Creek, ranger-led campfire programs on summer weekends, and tidepooling at low tide round out the options for kids.

The Humboldt coast has a marked wet-dry cycle. Summer through early fall is the prime RV window: dry days, comfortable highs in the 60s, and the best river conditions for swimming and kayaking. Coastal fog is common in June and early July, often burning off inland by midday around Hydesville. Late summer can bring blue-green algae advisories on slower river stretches such as the Van Duzen near Grizzly Creek, so check Humboldt County Public Health notices before swimming. Fall delivers clearer skies and lighter visitation, with steelhead beginning to enter the Eel and Van Duzen systems. Winter is the wet season; storms can stack up between November and March, and many private parks along the Avenue of the Giants close or reduce operations. Ancient Redwoods RV Park, for example, operates from April 1 through October 19. Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park's campground is open in the summer only, generally from late spring through Labor Day. Year-round options near Hydesville are limited mainly to the commercial riverside parks along Highway 101.

Expect a mix of riverside gravel parks and shaded forest loops. Hookup sites at the commercial parks generally include water, sewer, and 30 or 50 amp service, with laundry and Wi-Fi on premises. Ancient Redwoods RV Park has 49 level paved, big-rig friendly spaces with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, water hookups, sanitary dump access, a convenience store and gift shop, laundry, showers, and restrooms. Cell service is unreliable inside dense redwood groves, including around Ancient Redwoods RV Park, which suits campers wanting to disconnect but complicates work-from-the-road plans. Bathroom facilities at Grizzly Creek include flush toilets and coin-operated showers. Expect highway noise at sites adjacent to Highway 36 or 101, and bring layers for cool evenings even in July.
