Campgrounds near Johnstonville, California
Johnstonville sits in the Honey Lake Valley of Lassen County in northeastern California, a few miles east of Susanville along Highway 395. The community functions as a quiet base for RV travellers heading to Eagle Lake, the second largest natural freshwater lake wholly in California, located about 16 miles north of Susanville at roughly 5,100 feet of elevation.
Close-in private parks include Susanville RV Park and Days End RV Park, both convenient stopovers off Highway 395. North of town, Eagle Lake RV Park, American Eagle RV Park, and Eagle Lake Marina put RVers near the south shore of the lake itself. The Eagle Lake Marina includes a small store, restrooms, showers, and a fish cleaning station, useful for resupply after a long drive.
Just up the road, the Eagle Lake Recreation Area within Lassen National Forest contains five campgrounds, three designated day use areas, and a marina on the south shore of the lake, offering federal-land options alongside the private parks closer to Johnstonville.
Things to do near Johnstonville
Most trips center on Eagle Lake. Fishing for the Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout, a California Heritage Trout, is the primary recreational activity, but the lake provides plenty of room for swimming, kayaking, water skiing, and other boating activities by motor or sail. There are no 2-cycle restrictions for outboard motors or PWCs, so jet skis and ski boats are welcome.
On land, a 5.2 mile paved hiking and bike trail connects the south-shore campgrounds, day use areas, and marina, making it easy for families to ride from camp to swim beaches such as Gallatin Beach. Day trips reach Lassen Volcanic National Park, with its lava flows and cinder cones, and the Bizz Johnson rail trail running out of Susanville. Susanville Ranch Park offers additional local hiking and mountain biking close to town.

The camping calendar here is driven by snow and fire conditions. Snow in the Susanville area usually begins around November and ends by April, and the area averages about 62 inches of snowfall per year. Forest Service campgrounds on Eagle Lake follow that pattern: peak season runs from mid-May through Labor Day, with a walk-in only season from Labor Day to December 31.
Mid-summer brings hot, dry days and the risk of fire restrictions. Fire restrictions may be imposed at any time due to hot, dry conditions, at which point campfires and charcoal fires may not be allowed, so RVers should check Lassen National Forest alerts before arrival.
Lassen Volcanic National Park, the most common day-trip destination, closes its main road every winter. After heavy autumn storms, the main park highway is closed to through traffic, vehicle access is limited to roughly one mile from each entrance, and the roads into Juniper Lake, Warner Valley, and Butte Lake are closed to vehicles through spring snow clearing.
How to book campgrounds near Johnstonville
Federal sites at Eagle Lake are booked online. Campground fees are run by a concessionaire, with reservation information on Recreation.gov. At Merrill, the largest south-shore option, forty-five sites are designated walk-in sites and the remaining 125 are reservation sites, so arriving mid-week improves the odds when reservations are full.
Know the hold rules before booking. Reserved sites are held until check-out time (noon) the day following the arrival date, and sites must be occupied by that following day or the reservation is forfeited and released. Once the reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov contact center nor the campground manager can modify the reservation. Private parks such as Susanville RV Park, Days End RV Park, Eagle Lake RV Park, and American Eagle RV Park take direct bookings by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a high-desert plateau meeting pine forest. The northern and middle sections of Eagle Lake are bordered by sagebrush hills, while the southern end is forested with pine and fir, so south-shore Forest Service sites feel shaded and cool while northern BLM sites feel open and exposed.
Facilities vary by park. At Merrill, the campground has flush toilets, potable water points, grey water dumps, limited WiFi, and firewood for purchase, with an RV dump station located just outside the campground. Private parks in and around Susanville and Johnstonville offer full hookups and pull-throughs better suited to larger rigs.
Elevation matters for RV planning. Sites around the lake sit near 5,100 feet, so nights stay cool even in summer, refrigerators and engines work harder, and afternoon thunderstorms can blow through quickly. Extra vehicles are charged a per-night fee collected at the campground, so tow vehicles and guest cars should be planned in advance.

visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/shasta-cascade/What license do I need to rent an RV in Johnstonville, California?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Johnstonville. California does not require a special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers under 40 feet, which covers nearly every rig on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to drop off. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. With that handled, you're free to point the rig toward Eagle Lake or Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Booking is lower risk than you might think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the individual host, and every reservation includes a money back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip start date is. If a host cancels, RVezy helps you get a refund or rebook. You can review the full cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before you book. Pro tip: book your RV rental in Johnstonville early to secure the rig you want, then finalize Eagle Lake or Lake Almanor campground reservations once the RV is confirmed.

Note that inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, pets are restricted to paved roads, campgrounds, and parking areas. Pro tip: message the host to confirm any pet fee and bring a tie-out for relaxed campsite afternoons.
blm.gov/visit/bizz-johnson-national-recreation-trailCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Johnstonville?
Yes, and RV delivery in Johnstonville is a fantastic option, especially if you're new to towing or want a turn-key setup. Many RVezy hosts in the Susanville and Lassen County area will drive the rig to your campsite, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Popular delivery destinations include Eagle Lake RV Park, Susanville RV Park on Johnstonville Road, and campgrounds inside Lassen Volcanic National Park such as Manzanita Lake. Filter listings by Delivery to see available hosts and their per-mile rates. Pro tip: ask about a pickup at the end too, so you can simply drive home in your own car.

The best campgrounds near Johnstonville include Susanville RV Park at 3075 Johnstonville Road with 101 full-hookup sites and big-rig pull-throughs, Eagle Lake RV Park 16 miles north with full hookups, boat ramp access, and a store, and the Forest Service's Merrill, Aspen Grove, and Christie campgrounds at Eagle Lake (reservable on Recreation.gov). For a national-park experience, Manzanita Lake Campground in Lassen Volcanic National Park sits at 5,900 feet with views of Lassen Peak. Pro tip: federal sites release on Recreation.gov six months ahead at 7 a.m. Pacific, set a calendar reminder for the exact release morning of your dates.
recreation.gov/gateways/2803When is the best time of year for RV camping in Johnstonville?
Late June through early October is the sweet spot. At 4,200 feet elevation, Johnstonville and the surrounding Lassen County high desert see summer highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and crisp nights in the 40s to 50s, ideal RV weather. Lassen Volcanic National Park's main road typically opens fully by late June (snow lingers above 7,000 feet into early summer) and closes with the first big snowfall, often in November. September is the local insider favorite: warm days, cool nights, golden aspens along the Bizz Johnson Trail, and far thinner crowds. Pro tip: book your RV rental in California 8 to 12 weeks ahead for prime July and August dates.
weather.gov/sto/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and Johnstonville is actually a forgiving place to learn. Highway 36 and Highway 395 are wide, low-traffic two-lane highways with generous shoulders, perfect for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to operate the generator, dump tanks, level the rig, hook up shore power, and run the propane appliances. You can also message your host before booking with any questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included. Pro tip: ask for a travel trailer or Class C under 28 feet for your first trip, they handle more like a large pickup than a bus and fit easily into Eagle Lake sites.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/safe-driving/What if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Johnstonville booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, which covers items like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something mechanical comes up, call the roadside line first, then message your host through the RVezy app, since they often know quirks of their own rig and can talk you through small fixes. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: cell service can be patchy between Susanville and Lassen Volcanic National Park along Highway 44, so download offline maps and save the roadside number to your phone before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips I can take from Johnstonville?
You're in a prime launching spot. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Johnstonville include: Lassen Volcanic National Park loop (75 miles west on Highway 44, plan 2 to 4 nights), Lake Tahoe via Highway 395 and 89 (130 miles, 2.5 hours), Reno and the Truckee River (90 miles south, great for a weekend), McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park (110 miles northwest, home to a 129-foot waterfall Teddy Roosevelt called the eighth wonder of the world), and Lake Almanor (45 miles southwest). Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but Oregon and Nevada are typically fine, confirm with your host. Pro tip: a 5-night loop hitting Lassen, Burney Falls, and Eagle Lake is unforgettable.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=455What should I budget for fuel on a Johnstonville RV trip?
Easier to plan than you'd think. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer typically 10 to 14 MPG. Northern California gas runs roughly $4.50 to $5.25 per gallon in 2026, with the Susanville and Janesville stations on Highway 395 usually cheaper than anything inside Lassen Volcanic National Park (there is no fuel in the park itself). A 300-mile loop in a Class C burns about 30 gallons, roughly $140 to $160. Pro tip: top off in Susanville before heading west on Highway 44, the next reliable fuel is in Old Station or Chester.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Johnstonville?
Earlier is better, but you have options. For Lassen Volcanic National Park campgrounds like Manzanita Lake, Summit Lake, and Butte Lake, reservations open six months in advance on Recreation.gov and popular summer weekends can sell out within minutes. Eagle Lake Forest Service campgrounds (Merrill, Aspen Grove, and Christie) also book through Recreation.gov, and four to six months out is typically safe. Private parks like Susanville RV Park and Eagle Lake RV Park book directly and often have shorter lead times, two to four weeks for summer. Pro tip: if Lassen is full, look for a Lassen National Forest first come site on Highway 44, or book Eagle Lake as a base camp and day trip into the park.
recreation.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Johnstonville?
Generally easy, with a few mountain-aware moments. Highway 395 and Highway 36 through Lassen County are well-maintained two-lane routes with light traffic outside of holiday weekends. The main thing to plan for: elevation changes between Susanville (4,200 ft) and Lassen Volcanic National Park (up to 8,500 ft on the park highway), which can slow heavy rigs on grades, drop gears early and use engine braking on the descent. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk along Highway 395, and check Caltrans QuickMap before heading west on Highway 44 in spring or fall for snow advisories. Pro tip: the Fredonyer Pass summit on Highway 36 west of Susanville sits at 5,748 feet, take it steady and enjoy the view.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What hookups and dump stations can I expect at local campgrounds?
You have great infrastructure here. Full-hookup parks like Susanville RV Park and Eagle Lake RV Park offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer at the site, plus showers, laundry, and dump stations. Lassen Volcanic National Park campgrounds (Manzanita Lake, Summit Lake) are non-hookup but have potable water fills and a dump station at Manzanita Lake during the summer season. Lassen National Forest campgrounds along Highway 44 typically offer vault toilets, hand-pumped or piped water, and no hookups, classic dry camping. Free potable water is available in Susanville. Pro tip: fill fresh water and dump tanks at Susanville RV Park or the Manzanita Lake station before heading into Lassen's backcountry loop, services thin out fast past Old Station.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/camping-in-campgrounds.htmWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Johnstonville?
More comfort than most people expect. A typical RV camping Johnstonville setup includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), a full kitchen with propane stove, oven, microwave, and refrigerator, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted travel seats. Many hosts include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, an awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid nights at Eagle Lake. Wi-Fi and TVs are common but cell service drives the data, expect spotty coverage west of Susanville. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and check the listing photos for a generator if you're heading to non-hookup campgrounds in Lassen National Forest.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/things-to-know-before-you-come.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Lots of flexibility here. Common RVezy add-ons in Johnstonville include generator usage (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond included hours), kitchen and bedding kits ($50 to $100 per trip), bike racks, outdoor grills, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Johnstonville, Susanville, or Janesville, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering every system. As mentioned, delivery to nearby campgrounds is widely available. Mileage packages vary, so review the listing's per-night allowance and pick the right tier at checkout. Pro tip: if you're new to RVing, splurge on the bedding and kitchen add-ons for your first trip, it turns the rig into a true turn-key vacation cabin on wheels.
visitcalifornia.com/experience/discover-shasta-cascade-region/How does payment and the security deposit work?
It is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in California through RVezy, you pay the trip total online through the platform, with no cash or off platform transfers. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) shortly before your trip and is released after the host confirms the RV is returned clean, on time, and undamaged. Refundable deposits are returned within a few business days. Pro tip: take date stamped photos and a short video of the interior, exterior, fuel gauge, and odometer at both pickup and dropoff to protect your deposit and avoid disputes.
