Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake California, CA

The Sacramento River is the main draw: drift boating, salmon and trout fishing, kayaking, and swimming holes are all within minutes of the I-5 corridor. Whiskeytown Lake, about 30 minutes northwest, has swimming beaches, paddle rentals, and four waterfall trails crossing oak woodlands and conifer forest. Lassen Volcanic National Park sits roughly 90 minutes east, with hydrothermal areas, alpine lakes, and family-friendly hikes to peaks and geothermal features. Closer in, the Sacramento River Trail system around Redding connects to the Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Anglers target salmon, trout, sturgeon, and bass on the river, while families often combine a Whiskeytown beach day with a Lassen day trip.

The northern Sacramento Valley has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are sweltering, dry, and mostly clear, with valley highs frequently exceeding 100°F in Redding and surrounding lowlands. Winters are mild and wet, with very little snowfall in the valley itself and most rain falling between November and March. Annual rainfall around Red Bluff averages roughly 18 to 23 inches depending on the station, with December and January typically the wettest months. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for valley camping, with daytime highs in the 60s to 80s and cool nights. Wildflowers peak in March and April. Summer is prime water-recreation season on the Sacramento River and Whiskeytown Lake, but expect intense heat and elevated wildfire risk. Lassen Volcanic National Park typically sees snow on the park highway into June, with the full road usually open from late June or early July through October. First frost in Red Bluff usually arrives in early December and last frost in early March.

The closest RV parks sit just off Interstate 5, which means easy access and steady road noise. Sacramento River RV Park has 140 full-hookup sites including back-in and pull-thru options, accommodates rigs up to 60 feet, and offers a pool, laundry, dog park, and playground; a portion of the park is long-term residential. JGW RV Park shares the same Riverland Drive river-frontage stretch. Expect clean facilities and occasional wildlife such as deer near the wooded edges. Fairground sites at Shasta District Fairground and Tehama District Fairgrounds are utilitarian: paved or graveled rows with hookups and limited shade, oriented toward event traffic. Bring sun protection in summer, screens for mosquitoes near the river at dusk, and bear-aware food storage practices for any trips into Whiskeytown or Lassen. Cell coverage is reliable along the I-5 corridor and patchy in the mountains.
