Camping near Lake Mathews, California
Lake Mathews sits in Riverside County between Corona, Riverside, and Lake Elsinore, with the I-15 and SR-91 corridors providing straightforward RV access from greater Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. The Lake Mathews-Estelle Mountain Reserve is jointly owned and managed by Metropolitan Water District and the Riverside County Habitat Conservation Agency, serves as an important bird resting and feeding site (particularly in winter for ducks, cormorants, grebes, and eagles), and offers no public recreational facilities at the lake itself. Fishing is not allowed in Lake Mathews; it is a critical drinking water reservoir, strictly closed to public swimming, boating, and fishing to protect water quality.
Because the reservoir itself is closed, RV travelers base out of nearby private parks and the larger state recreation area at Lake Perris. Closest options include Glen Eden Nudist Resort, Glen Ivy RV Park, Lake Park RV Resort and Lodge, Meadowbrook RV Park, and Launch Pointe on Lake Elsinore, with Lake Perris State Recreation Area roughly half an hour east for a full state-park camping experience.
Things to do near Lake Mathews
The reservoir is closed to recreation, but the surrounding reserve and nearby parks give RV travelers plenty to do. The Estelle Mountain Trail is a 3.4-mile loop rated moderate, climbing to the top of Estelle Mountain for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding area. To protect sensitive wildlife and delicate ecosystems within the Lake Mathews Reserve, dogs are generally not permitted on the hiking trails, so families should plan pet-free hike days.
Water recreation centers on Lake Perris and Lake Elsinore. Lake Perris offers a variety of water recreation including swimming, fishing from shore, pier and boat, boating, sailing, waterskiing, and a special area for scuba diving. Anglers find rainbow trout, catfish, and Alabama spotted bass, and along the shore are opportunities for hikers, bikers, and equestrians. At Lake Elsinore, Launch Pointe guests can use family-friendly amenities and on-site boat rentals, and any angler should bring a valid California fishing license.

The Inland Empire is a year-round RV destination, but each season has a distinct character. Lake Perris is at its busiest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when temperatures in the 90s and even the 100s are common, so summer weekends and holidays fill quickly and book early. California State Parks limits consecutive nights at Lake Perris during the peak summer-and-fall stretch, so longer-stay RVers should check the current rules with the park before planning back-to-back reservations.
Winter is the quietest stretch, with cool, mild days and fewer crowds. Winter is also the best wildlife window at the Lake Mathews reserve, with a variety of ducks, double-crested cormorants, western grebe, eared grebe, golden eagles, and bald eagles present.
Fire danger shapes fall planning across nearby public lands. Hot, dry Santa Ana wind events, most common in fall, can spike wildfire risk and trigger campfire restrictions. Spring brings mild temperatures and the area's best wildflower displays in the coastal sage scrub of the reserve.

My 2 kids loved the trailer, we got it delivered with all the optionals included so It was a breeze. Everything worked great - ac & heater where required a couple if times. Water tank was full but we ran out after 3 days even thou we used the camping showers, so I would plan accordingly if you are camping without hookups. I’d definitely rent from Daniel again.

How to book campgrounds near Lake Mathews
Reservation systems vary by operator. Lake Perris Campground is open all year, sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 31 feet, all sites are currently reservable, reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance, each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill, and 254 sites have electric and water hookups. Bookings go through ReserveCalifornia, and reservations fill quickly for the summer months.
Private parks such as Launch Pointe, Glen Ivy RV Park, Lake Park RV Resort and Lodge, Meadowbrook RV Park, and Glen Eden Nudist Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or partner platforms. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is reasonable for summer weekends, with longer lead times for major holidays.
What to expect when camping near Lake Mathews
Most campgrounds in this region are full-hookup RV parks rather than primitive sites, with paved pads, shade structures, pools, and family amenities. Launch Pointe on Lake Elsinore mixes lakeview RV sites with cabins, vintage trailers, and yurts, while the surrounding private parks lean toward resort-style stays. Lake Perris offers a more traditional state-park feel with paved sites, a picnic table, fire ring and grill at each site, potable water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, a dump station, a small marina, boat ramp and swim beach.
Expect hot, dry summer days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall outside winter. Campfires are restricted to park-provided fire rings, and private parks typically tighten campfire rules during fire season. Boaters at Lake Perris should plan for mandatory vessel inspections and separate boat-launch fees in addition to the camping reservation.
