Campgrounds near Lake Sherwood, California
Lake Sherwood sits in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County, putting RV renters within a short drive of both coastal state-park campgrounds and inland canyon sites. The lake itself is a private, gated community with no public camping, so trip planning centers on parks operated by California State Parks plus a private RV park on the Malibu coast.
The closest options span three distinct settings. Leo Carrillo State Park offers sycamore-shaded sites at the Canyon Campground, reservable through ReserveCalifornia, with 46 sites that include electrical hookups for RVs up to 31 feet. Point Mugu State Park runs two campgrounds: Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp, set in a canyon of sycamore and oak about half a mile from Sycamore Cove Beach, accepting tents, trailers, and RVs up to 31 feet, and Thornhill Broome Family Camp, a beachfront site at the northern end of Point Mugu with picnic tables, fire pits, and portable toilets but no hookups or showers. Inland, Malibu Creek State Park Family Camp sits on open terrain within a former movie-set location and accommodates RVs up to 30 feet with a dump station but no hookups. Malibu Beach RV Park rounds out the list as the only fully serviced private RV park on this stretch of coast.
Things to do near Lake Sherwood
Coastal campgrounds put renters within walking distance of swimming, surfing, and tidepooling. Leo Carrillo State Park has 1.5 miles of beach for swimming, surfing, windsurfing, surf fishing and beachcombing, with tidepools, coastal caves and reefs to explore. At Point Mugu, Thornhill Broome Family Camp faces a giant sand dune used by hikers for elevation training, and campers have a view of Mugu Rock and the distant Channel Islands from the beach, with a nearby trailhead for hiking.
Inland, Malibu Creek State Park is built for hiking and history. The park sits on former 20th Century Fox backlot land where M*A*S*H was filmed, with creek pools, oak woodlands, and volcanic rock formations. Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp provides easy access to more than 70 miles of hiking trails reaching the Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area, plus mountain biking, whale watching, bird watching, and wildlife spotting.

The region has a Mediterranean climate, so the camping calendar is shaped less by snow than by rainfall, wind, and fire risk. Nearby Thousand Oaks has mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers, with average highs from the mid 60s in winter to the low 80s in summer, and most of the roughly 12 to 15 inches of annual rainfall arriving between November and March. Most campgrounds in the area stay open year-round, but winter storms can briefly close PCH-adjacent sites and force trail closures after heavy rain.
Spring brings wildflower blooms in the Santa Monica Mountains and reliable hiking weather, with marine layer fog common in May and June. Summer is peak season, and coastal sites at Leo Carrillo and Thornhill Broome Family Camp tend to book out months ahead. Fall is dry and hot, with Santa Ana winds and elevated wildfire risk, and fire restrictions may be in place, so checking with park rangers for current fire regulations before a visit is recommended. Late fall through early spring brings ocean fog and chilly nights along the coast.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️

Had a great time and our trailer was perfect. Oscar was wonderful as well.

The RV was great! Had everything we needed. Arie is amazing! Picked us up and dropped us off. He was always available if we had any questions during our trip.

How to book campgrounds near Lake Sherwood
All four state-park campgrounds near Lake Sherwood book through the same system. Reservations can be made at www.reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. Online reservations open six months in advance, and popular summer weekends at Leo Carrillo State Park and Thornhill Broome Family Camp typically sell out within minutes of release.
When searching ReserveCalifornia, look up Point Mugu State Park to find both Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp and Thornhill Broome Family Camp. Select campsites at Malibu Creek State Park are part of California State Parks' monthly Reservation Draw program, a lottery-style system that gives all visitors an equal chance to apply for reservations each month. Malibu Beach RV Park is booked separately through its own website. For cancellations, check ReserveCalifornia in the days before arrival, since released sites reappear regularly.
What to expect at Lake Sherwood campgrounds
RV size limits are the single biggest planning constraint. Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp and Thornhill Broome Family Camp accept trailers and motorhomes up to 31 feet combined length, and Malibu Creek State Park Family Camp holds 63 individual sites for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 30 feet, each with a fire ring and picnic table, with flush toilets and coin-operated showers nearby, no hookups, but a dump station on site. Hookups are limited overall: at Leo Carrillo State Park, 46 sites in the Canyon Campground offer 20, 30, and 50-amp electric service.
Thornhill Broome Family Camp is the most primitive of the group, with dry camping and portable toilets, and the closest dump station is at Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp. Expect afternoon wind, PCH traffic noise at beachfront sites, marine layer fog on summer mornings, and variable cell service. Mountain lions have been spotted in the Point Mugu State Park area, so take extra precautions outdoors.

RV rental in Lake Sherwood is more affordable than many travelers expect when you book directly from local owners on RVezy. Travel trailers often start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes typically range from $175 to $300 per night, and luxury Class A coaches climb higher. Many Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks hosts also lower prices for Sunday-to-Thursday stays, perfect for a midweek Santa Monica Mountains escape.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Sherwood%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lake Sherwood?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Sherwood. California does not require a special RV license or commercial driver's license (CDL) for any motorhome or trailer you'll find on RVezy, whether it's a nimble campervan or a 32-foot Class C. You must be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the booking platform, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised at how quickly the verification clears, sometimes within minutes, leaving you free to focus on planning your Pacific Coast Highway drive.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/What protection is included with my Lake Sherwood RV rental?
Every RV rental in Lake Sherwood booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull onto Westlake Boulevard. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle and provides real financial peace of mind. During checkout you choose your coverage level, not the host, so you can pick the tier that matches your comfort and trip length. Whether you are heading into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area or up the 101 toward Santa Barbara, you can drive knowing RVezy support is one phone call away, day or night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Lake Sherwood plans change?
Booking your Lake Sherwood RV trip is low-risk thanks to RVezy's standardized cancellation policy, which applies to every listing on the platform (hosts do not set their own rules). There is a money-back grace period right after booking and additional flexibility depending on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because the policy is handled at the RVezy level, you will not see a different cancellation policy on each listing, which keeps things simple. If a host ever has to cancel on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits. Booking early lets you lock in the best Lake Sherwood RVs while still leaving room to adjust if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Sherwood?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rentals in Lake Sherwood are plentiful on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you will see motorhomes and trailers where your dog is genuinely welcome. Lake Sherwood and the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains are a dream for dog lovers: Wildwood Regional Park in Thousand Oaks has miles of leashed-dog trails, and Point Mugu State Park's La Jolla Valley allows leashed pets on fire roads. Most Conejo Valley hosts also welcome a quick message before booking if you have multiple pets or a larger breed. Sycamore Cove Beach, a leash-friendly spot about 20 minutes away on PCH, is a great stop to add to your itinerary.
nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental near Lake Sherwood?
Yes, RV delivery is one of the most popular options for Lake Sherwood trips on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you are new to RVing or visiting from out of town. Many local hosts in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and Agoura Hills will tow the RV directly to your campground, vacation home, or even a friend's driveway, then level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer it: some include free delivery within a set radius, while others charge per mile. It is the easiest way to enjoy a Lake Sherwood RV trip without ever needing to back up a trailer yourself.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037946794-RV-deliveryHow do mileage policies work for an RV road trip from Lake Sherwood?
Mileage is straightforward on RVezy: each host sets a daily mileage allowance, and you will see it clearly on the listing before you book. Many Lake Sherwood hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per day with reasonable per-mile rates beyond that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer adventures. Planning an RV road trip from Lake Sherwood up to Big Sur (about 240 miles) or out to Joshua Tree (around 175 miles)? Filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host to discuss a custom mileage package. Combining unlimited mileage with a weekly discount often works out better than a short trip with strict limits.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106074-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Lake Sherwood for RV camping?
The best campgrounds near Lake Sherwood put you within 30 minutes of the water and offer real hookups. Top picks include Malibu Beach RV Park (oceanfront sites with full hookups in Malibu, about 25 miles south), Leo Carrillo State Park Campground (beachside camping with vehicle length limits on some loops, so check site details), Point Mugu State Park's Sycamore Canyon (shaded sites near the coast), and Thornhill Broome Beach (sand-meets-PCH camping). For inland forest vibes, Malibu Creek State Park Campground is about 15 minutes from Lake Sherwood. Book early through ReserveCalifornia, especially May through September. Midweek arrivals at Sycamore Canyon almost always score the best canyon-view sites.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time to visit Lake Sherwood in an RV?
Lake Sherwood enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which means RV trips are genuinely a year-round affair, not just a summer thing. The sweet spot is March through early June, when hillsides turn green, wildflowers bloom across the Santa Monica Mountains, and daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 78°F range. September through November is the locals' secret season: warm days, cool nights, no marine layer, and far fewer crowds at coastal campgrounds. Summer (July to August) brings highs in the mid-80s and busy beaches, while winter days hover around 65°F with occasional rain. Pro tip: avoid red-flag wind days in October and early November when fire weather can briefly close some parks.
weather.gov/lox/It is my first time renting an RV in Lake Sherwood. How does pickup and orientation work?
If it is your first time renting an RV, you are in great hands on RVezy. Every Lake Sherwood host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane and water systems, slide-outs, the generator, and how to dump tanks. Most walkthroughs run 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts are real owners who genuinely want you to feel confident in their rig. You can also message the host through RVezy before your trip with any questions, from driving tips on Highway 23 to which dump station to use. Recording the orientation on your phone is a great trick so you can replay the propane and slide-out steps at your first campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037945714-What-to-expect-at-pickupWhat happens if I have a roadside issue during my Lake Sherwood RV trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Mulholland Highway, a dead battery at Leo Carrillo, or need a tow on the 101, help is one phone call away. You will also have your host's direct contact for quick questions about quirks specific to that RV. The Santa Monica Mountains have solid cell coverage on main roads, though canyon dead zones exist, so download offline maps before you head out. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have the details ready if you ever need to call in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340234-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Lake Sherwood RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Multi-state RV road trips are welcomed on RVezy. From Lake Sherwood you can drive your rental into Nevada (Las Vegas is about 280 miles), Arizona (Sedona is roughly 470 miles), Oregon, or anywhere in the continental US, though it is smart to message the host first so they know your route. Mexico, however, is off-limits on every RVezy booking because the protection coverage does not extend south of the border. Popular cross-state runs from Lake Sherwood include Zion National Park (about 430 miles) and Yosemite (around 320 miles). Sharing your itinerary in the RVezy chat lets your host flag fuel stops and any low-clearance routes to avoid.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lake Sherwood RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any California RV budget, so it pays to plan ahead. Expect 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 10 mpg for a Class A, and 12 to 18 mpg for a campervan or small trailer setup. California gas averages run higher than the national rate, often $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon in the Conejo Valley, with diesel similar. For a 3-day trip with 300 miles of driving in a Class C, you're looking at roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: the Costco in Westlake Village (off Lindero Canyon Road) consistently has the lowest gas prices near Lake Sherwood, and it's right off the 101.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Lake Sherwood?
For peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day, plus all holiday weekends), book California State Park campgrounds the moment they open: ReserveCalifornia releases sites exactly 6 months in advance at 8:00 AM Pacific. Coastal favorites like Leo Carrillo, Point Mugu's Sycamore Canyon, and Malibu Creek sell out in minutes. For shoulder season (March, April, October, November), 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Private parks like Malibu Beach RV Park accept reservations up to a year out and fill quickly for summer weekends. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for exactly 6 months before your desired check-in date, and have ReserveCalifornia logged in and ready, the difference between scoring an ocean-view site and missing out is often 30 seconds.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Lake Sherwood?
Driving around Lake Sherwood is easier than most first-timers expect, especially if you stick to the main routes. The 101 Freeway runs just minutes from the lake and handles RVs of any size, with the Lindero Canyon and Westlake Boulevard exits being the most popular for getting in and out. Stay off the tightest mountain roads like Mulholland Highway west of Kanan and Decker Canyon Road if you're in anything over 25 feet, the switchbacks are tight and there are low-hanging oak branches. Watch for marine-layer fog in coastal canyons during summer mornings and red-flag wind warnings in fall. Pro tip: Pacific Coast Highway is RV-friendly and gorgeous, just avoid weekend afternoons when Malibu traffic crawls.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/Where can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Lake Sherwood?
You've got several solid options within a short drive. Most California State Park campgrounds near Lake Sherwood (including Leo Carrillo, Point Mugu's Sycamore Canyon, and Malibu Creek) have on-site dump stations and potable water fills, available for free to overnight guests and typically a small fee for day-use. Private parks like Malibu Beach RV Park offer full hookups at every site, so you may not need a separate dump at all. Many local hosts in Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks will also handle tank dumping for you at trip-end for a flat fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading up PCH, water spigots are scarce between Malibu and Oxnard.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21434What amenities come standard in a Lake Sherwood RV rental?
Lake Sherwood RV rentals on RVezy come fully equipped to feel like home on wheels. Most motorhome rental listings in Lake Sherwood include a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, dining area, air conditioning, and a furnace for cool nights. Class C and Class A coaches have seatbelts for every rider, plus a TV and often a backup camera. Many newer rigs include solar, Wi-Fi hotspots, and onboard generators, ideal for boondocking in the Santa Monica Mountains. Campervan rental seekers will find Sprinter and Transit conversions with clever galleys and pop-tops. Filter by Sleeps 4+ and Generator if you want the freedom to camp off-grid at spots like Sycamore Canyon.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Sherwood%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available in Lake Sherwood?
RVezy hosts in the Lake Sherwood area offer a wide range of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include bedding and linen kits ($25 to $75), kitchen packages with pots and utensils, outdoor camping chairs and tables, generators or extra propane, bike racks, and even paddleboards (a hit for Lake Casitas trips). Pickup typically happens at the host's home in Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, or Newbury Park, but delivery is widely available, often free within a set radius. Mileage policies and pet fees are shown clearly on each listing. Bundling add-ons when you book, rather than adding them last-minute, often unlocks host discounts and saves you a pre-trip scramble for gear.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Sherwood%2C%20CaliforniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and fully online, with no cash or driveway handoffs. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, and the booking is confirmed once the host accepts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value and the host's settings), and it is released after your trip wraps up cleanly. The deposit covers things like excessive cleaning, missing items, or damage not covered by your protection plan. To keep things smooth: do a walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your host requires it. Keep all receipts and photos in the RVezy chat for the cleanest deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Lake Sherwood?
Lake Sherwood is one of the best launchpads in Southern California for an RV road trip. Short hops include Malibu and PCH (25 miles, perfect for an overnight), Santa Barbara wine country (60 miles up the 101), and Ojai (40 miles for hot springs and stargazing). For longer adventures, Sequoia National Park is about 220 miles north, Joshua Tree National Park is roughly 175 miles east, and the Eastern Sierra's Mammoth Lakes is around 320 miles, a great 4-day loop. A favorite family RV trip from Lake Sherwood is Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard (about 30 miles) for whale-watching paired with beachside RV camping. Head east on the 101 before 7 AM on Fridays to beat LA-bound traffic when you are aiming for Joshua Tree.
