Camping near Lamont, California
Lamont sits in the southern San Joaquin Valley, just southeast of Bakersfield, with quick access to State Route 99 and State Route 58. The location works as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the Sierra Nevada, Sequoia National Forest, the Kern River corridor, or points farther east toward the Mojave. Local private parks cluster on the Bakersfield side and along the main highway corridors, while public campgrounds operated by the U.S. Forest Service open up to the north and east in the Kern River Ranger District.
Full-hookup options closest to Lamont include Orange Grove RV Park and Resort and Bakersfield Travel Park. Bakersfield KOA, Bear Mountain RV Resort, and Shady Haven RV Park add more pull-through capacity, laundry, and family-oriented amenities. Travelers planning to push into the mountains can stage here for a night, then head toward Lake Isabella and the Upper Kern River, where anglers, boaters, and rafters share the canyon. Developed Forest Service campgrounds along the Upper Kern are reservable through Recreation.gov.
Things to do near Lamont
Day trips from Lamont fan out in three directions. East on State Route 178, the Kern River canyon offers whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Upper Kern River, a designated Wild and Scenic River, plus fishing and boating at Lake Isabella, an 11,000-acre reservoir. North and east, the Trail of 100 Giants and giant sequoia groves in the Giant Sequoia National Monument are within day-trip range, with Sequoia National Park beyond. Closer to camp, the California Living Museum in Bakersfield focuses on native California animals and plants and works well for families. The Cannell Meadow National Recreation Trail near Kernville climbs out of the canyon into mixed pine forest.

The climate around Lamont is arid, with mild, relatively rainy winters and very hot, sunny summers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel: daytime highs stay manageable, wildflowers appear in the foothills, and the Kern River runs strong from snowmelt through late spring. Summer brings sustained triple-digit heat in the valley, so RVers often base in town for the night and drive up to higher elevations in Sequoia National Forest for day use, where canyon campgrounds along the river offer shade and cooler air.
Winter is the wettest season, though total rainfall is modest. Tule fog can form in the valley and reduce visibility on State Route 99 and Interstate 5, which is worth planning around if towing. Snow is very rare on the valley floor but routine in the Sierra Nevada above Kernville, where some Forest Service campgrounds close seasonally as the district transitions to winter operations. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through fall across the Sequoia National Forest.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

How to book campgrounds near Lamont
Private RV parks around Lamont and Bakersfield, including Orange Grove RV Park and Resort, Bakersfield Travel Park, Shady Haven RV Park, Bear Mountain RV Resort, and Bakersfield KOA, are booked directly through each park or through their listed online reservation systems. Most accept reservations year-round and hold full hookups for arriving rigs.
Developed campgrounds in Sequoia National Forest operate under a concessionaire program and can be reserved through Recreation.gov, online or by phone at 1-877-444-6777. Concessionaire operations on the forest are handled by ExplorUS and Rocky Mountain Recreation. Popular Kern River sites fill quickly on summer weekends, so booking well in advance is advised. A California campfire permit is required for stoves and campfires on national forest land outside developed sites, and glass is not allowed on the Sequoia National Forest.
What to expect
Private parks near Lamont are oriented toward highway travelers and long-stay guests, with paved or graveled pull-throughs, full hookups, laundry, and showers. Sites tend to be open with limited shade, so summer arrivals should plan for strong sun and run-time on the air conditioner. Cell service is reliable across the Bakersfield area and along main highways.
In the Kern River canyon, expect a different setup: vault toilets, drinking water at most developed sites, no hookups, and length limits on some access roads. At Hobo Campground, for example, vehicles and attachments cannot exceed 22 feet in length, and trailers are restricted to utility and small teardrops. Bears and other wildlife are active in the Sequoia National Forest, so food storage rules apply. Firewood should be bought locally and burned on-site to protect California forests from tree-killing pests.
