Campgrounds and RV parks near Las Flores, CA

Surfing dominates the coast here. Doheny State Beach has long, gentle breaks suited to beginners, while Trestles, reached on foot from San Mateo - San Onofre State Beach, draws experienced surfers. Crystal Cove State Park combines beach time with tide-pooling at low tide and miles of inland backcountry trails for hiking and mountain biking. San Clemente State Beach has bluff trails dropping to the sand and a paved coastal route popular with cyclists. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and harbor cruises run out of Dana Point Harbor, a few minutes from Doheny. Inland, Ortega Oaks RV Park and Campground puts riders and hikers within reach of Cleveland National Forest trails and the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness. Whale, sea lion, and dolphin sightings are common offshore, especially from late winter into spring.

The coast operates year-round, but demand swings hard with the calendar. Summer, roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day, is peak season at every state beach in the area. Beachfront and ocean-view sites at Doheny State Beach, San Clemente State Beach, and Crystal Cove State Park sell out the moment the booking window opens, and weekend availability essentially disappears. Spring and fall are the practical sweet spots for RV travel. April through early June can bring a marine layer locals call May Gray and June Gloom, with low overcast burning off by midday. September and October usually deliver the warmest, clearest beach weather of the year and lighter crowds once school resumes. Winter is mild but wet, with most rain falling between December and March. Coastal campgrounds stay open through the off-season, including San Mateo Campground, which is open year-round, while the Bluffs Campground at San Onofre operates seasonally from mid-May through September. Inland, Ortega Oaks RV Park and Campground can see cooler nights and occasional storm closures on Highway 74.

Coastal sites in this area lean compact rather than secluded. Doheny State Beach has no hookups, a single dump station, and tightly spaced sites; the BNSF rail line runs nearby, and trains pass at night. San Clemente State Beach offers a mix of standard and hookup sites on a bluff above the freeway. San Mateo Campground, near Trestles Beach, has sites equipped with electrical and water hookups, hot showers, and a dump station, with a maximum permitted length for motorhomes and trailers of 36 feet. Crystal Cove's Moro Campground has paved sites, restrooms, and ocean views, but no hookups. Cell coverage is generally good along the coast. Expect strict quiet hours, leashed-dog rules, and prohibitions on dogs on most state beaches and trails.
