Camping near Laytonville, California
Laytonville sits along Highway 101 in northern Mendocino County, in the upper Eel River watershed at the southern edge of California's redwood belt. The area works well as a base for RV travelers heading north into the tall-trees country or west across the Coast Range to the Mendocino coastline.
Campground options in the area cover a broad range. Mendocino Magic, on Branscomb Road west of town, is a large private property with a reservoir, trails, RV and tent sites, and furnished tents and cabins. Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort offers full-hookup sites and family amenities in the wider redwood corridor. North of Laytonville near Leggett, Rock Creek at Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area puts campers on a bluff above the South Fork Eel River among second-growth and old-growth redwoods. On the coast, Westport Beach RV Park and Campground provides hookups and ocean views, while Westport-Union Landing State Beach offers primitive bluff-top sites strung along three miles of shoreline.
Things to do near Laytonville
Most trips center on the South Fork Eel River and the surrounding redwoods. At Standish-Hickey, about ten miles of trails wind through canyon bluffs and old-growth groves, including the 225-foot Miles Standish Tree. A stretch of the South Fork Eel within the park supports swimming, wading, and fishing once water levels drop by mid-summer. Salmon and steelhead fishing pick up in fall and winter under California regulations.
On the coast, Westport-Union Landing State Beach covers more than three miles of bluff shoreline with tide-pooling and sunset views; ocean swimming is generally unsafe due to cold water, surf, and currents. Mendocino Magic adds reservoir swimming, catch-and-release fishing, kayaking, disc golf, and dark-sky stargazing. The drive between Laytonville and Fort Bragg by way of Highway 1 is itself a draw.

Summer is the prime RV window. Inland, days are warm and arid with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s and very little rain through July and August, so the South Fork Eel is low enough for safe wading and swimming. Coastal sites at Westport stay cooler, often foggy in the mornings, and wind on the bluffs is constant; layered clothing matters even in August.
Spring brings green hills, full rivers, and unpredictable showers. River access can be limited early in the season because seasonal footbridges inside Standish-Hickey are removed during high water, and parts of the park remain closed until summer. Fall is dry and stable through October, then cool and increasingly wet by November, with quieter campgrounds and the start of salmon and steelhead runs.
Winter is the wet season. Rain is frequent, nights are cold, and high water can close trails and day-use areas; at least one campground at Standish-Hickey stays open year-round, but expect mud and limited facilities.
How to book a Laytonville campsite
Reservation rules vary by operator. California State Parks units, including Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, are booked through ReserveCalifornia on a six-month rolling window that opens daily at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Summer weekends at Rock Creek fill quickly, so book as soon as the window opens. A limited number of sites at Standish-Hickey are held as first-come, first-served.
Westport-Union Landing State Beach is first-come, first-served only and does not accept reservations; camping fees are paid in cash or check at the park, not by credit or debit card. Private campgrounds in the area, including Mendocino Magic, Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort, and Westport Beach RV Park and Campground, take direct reservations through their websites or by phone, with weekends in July and August often selling out weeks in advance.
What to expect on arrival
RV size matters in this corridor. Rock Creek at Standish-Hickey has a 27-foot RV length limit with no hookups, flush toilets, showers, fire rings, and potable water. Cell coverage is patchy throughout the park and along Highway 1 between Westport and Fort Bragg. Westport-Union Landing sites are primitive, with pit toilets, water spigots, no showers, no hookups, and no dump station; sites suit rigs up to roughly 25 feet, and the bluff edges are steep and unfenced in places.
Fires must stay in provided rings, and firewood should be purchased locally to prevent pest spread. Generator hours at state parks typically run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mendocino Magic prohibits campfires and charcoal grills due to wildfire risk and uses a pack-in, pack-out policy for trash and recycling.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Laytonville, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Laytonville, CA?
RV rental in Laytonville is affordable compared to coastal California, with most rigs ranging from about $95 to $225 per night depending on size and season. Travel trailers and campervans are typically the cheap RV rental Laytonville options, while Class C motorhomes that sleep families run a bit higher. Budget for the host's mileage rate, fuel, generator hours if you plan to boondock, and campground fees (Standish-Hickey runs about $35 per night). Pro tip: booking midweek or in shoulder months like April and October can cut your nightly rate, since Highway 101 traffic through the redwoods is calmer and hosts often discount. Compare live pricing on RVezy before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Laytonville%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Laytonville?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need for the vast majority of RVs you'll rent in Laytonville. California only requires a Non-Commercial Class B license for motorhomes over 40 feet long, and almost every rig on RVezy falls well under that limit, so your standard Class C license covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels for personal use. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before you fly and you're set to enjoy your Laytonville RV trip.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/license-classes-and-requirements/What kind of protection comes with my Laytonville RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can roll into the redwoods feeling covered. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host) so you can match peace of mind to your comfort zone. Roadside assistance is built in, which matters on the winding stretches of Highway 101 and Branscomb Road where cell service can be patchy. Book confidently and focus on the Eel River swimming holes instead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Laytonville RV booking?
You're not locked in the moment you click book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform (hosts don't), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so first-time renters can lock in dates without stress. The specifics depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels for any reason, you'll receive a refund or travel credit per RVezy policy. Review the official cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before booking so you can plan your Laytonville RV trip with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Laytonville RV trip?
Absolutely, Mendocino redwood country is a dream for dog owners. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Laytonville quickly, and you'll find many hosts welcome well-behaved pups (some ask for a small pet fee or extra cleaning deposit). On the road, Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area allows leashed dogs in campsites and on paved roads, and Mendocino National Forest has miles of dog-friendly trails just east of town. Note that dogs aren't allowed on most state park backcountry trails or in river swim areas. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and tick prevention; the grassy meadows around the Eel River are tick country in spring.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=429Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Laytonville?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip, especially if you're flying in or new to RVing. Many hosts offer RV delivery Laytonville to popular spots like Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, Richardson Grove State Park, or a private property along Branscomb Road. The host pulls in, levels the rig, hooks up power and water if available, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter for delivery on RVezy and message the host with your destination to confirm distance fees. It's the move for first-time renters who want to skip the learning curve of driving Highway 101's tight curves.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Laytonville%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Laytonville?
Laytonville is a great launch pad for a Northern California RV road trip, and most hosts offer generous daily mileage (often 100 to 150 free miles per day, with reasonable per-mile fees beyond that). A few favorites within easy reach: the Avenue of the Giants is about 50 miles north, Fort Bragg and the Pacific Coast are roughly 60 miles west, Humboldt Redwoods State Park is around 70 miles north, and Clear Lake sits about 90 miles southeast. If you're planning a bigger loop to Crater Lake or San Francisco, look for hosts offering unlimited mileage RV rental options and message them before booking to confirm.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Laytonville%2C%20CaliforniaWhere should I stay with my RV near Laytonville?
You've got some of the best campgrounds near Laytonville right at your doorstep. Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area (about 20 miles north near Leggett) has sites along the South Fork Eel River and fits rigs up to 27 feet. Richardson Grove State Park, a bit further north, puts you among old-growth redwoods. Westport Beach RV Park (about 40 miles west) offers full-hookup oceanfront sites with Pacific sunsets. Closer to town, private-land RV camping Laytonville options offer creek access. For state parks, book through ReserveCalifornia six months ahead for summer weekends; midweek often opens up just days before.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Laytonville?
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for RV camping Laytonville visitors love. May through October brings warm, dry days with highs from the upper 60s in May to the upper 80s and low 90s in July and August, and cool nights perfect for campfires (typically dropping into the 50s). September and early October are an insider favorite: the river is still swimmable, the redwoods stay shady, and crowds thin out. Winter is wet and lush (Laytonville averages around 65 inches of rain a year, with January and February the wettest months), but rugged travelers can score steep discounts and have Standish-Hickey's open winter loop nearly to themselves.
weather.gov/eka/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know what I'm doing?
Yes, and you're in great company. First time renting an RV is a common starting point for RVezy guests, and every host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, fresh and waste tanks, propane, awning, and leveling. You can message your host anytime during the trip with questions. For Laytonville specifically, ask your host about Highway 101's tight stretches between Confusion Hill and Leggett, since they're locals and know the terrain. Pro tip: choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C for your first trip. They handle like a large van and make the winding drive through the Eel River canyon stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat near Branscomb, a battery dies at Standish-Hickey, or you need a tow off Highway 101, one phone call connects you to help. Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting on quirky systems, and RVezy's customer support team is available throughout your trip. Pro tip: cell service is spotty along the Eel River canyon and on backroads east toward Covelo, so download offline maps before you leave and note the host's number on paper. Laytonville itself has cellular coverage along Highway 101 and a small grocery and gas station for resupply.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Laytonville RV rental into Oregon or down to Mexico?
Heading north into Oregon is usually no problem, and it's a popular RV road trip from Laytonville (Crater Lake National Park is roughly a 7 to 8-hour drive). Most hosts allow interstate travel, so confirm with your host before booking and ask about any mileage cap. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage don't extend across that border. Popular legal routes from Laytonville include the full Redwood Coast drive to the Oregon border, an inland loop through Mount Shasta and Lassen Volcanic National Park, and a southern run toward Yosemite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Laytonville RV trip?
Plan for fuel to be one of your bigger trip costs, but it's manageable with a little planning. California gas averages higher than the national average, and the nearest stations to Laytonville tend to run a bit more than in Willits about 22 miles south, where prices are often cheaper. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a campervan rental Laytonville guests often choose, and 12 to 18 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer. Pro tip: fill up in Willits or Ukiah on your way north, since gas prices typically climb the further you go into the redwood corridor.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-gasoline-data-facts-and-statisticsHow far in advance should I book a campground near Laytonville?
For summer weekends at popular state parks, book six months out the day reservations open on ReserveCalifornia, the official California State Parks reservation system. Standish-Hickey, Richardson Grove, and Hendy Woods all fill quickly between Memorial Day and Labor Day. For private RV parks like Westport Beach RV Park or KOA Willits, two to three months ahead is usually plenty. Midweek and shoulder season (April, May, late September, October) you can often score a site just a few days out. Pro tip: if your dream site is booked, set a cancellation alert; California State Parks releases cancellations daily, and gems open up regularly.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Laytonville?
Highway 101 through Laytonville is a two-lane highway with sweeping curves, gradual climbs, and the occasional logging truck, but it's well-maintained and RV-friendly. The trickiest stretch is between Leggett and Garberville (the Confusion Hill area), where the road tightens and twists alongside the Eel River, so take it slow and use pullouts to let faster traffic by. Winter brings rain and occasional fallen branches, while summer is dry and clear. Avoid Branscomb Road and other narrow westbound mountain routes to the coast in larger Class A rigs; Highway 20 from Willits to Fort Bragg is the safer big-rig route. Check Caltrans QuickMap for live road conditions before you roll.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Laytonville?
Local campgrounds range from rustic state park sites to full-hookup resorts, so you can pick what suits your rig. Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area has flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, and fire rings, but no RV hookups, with a 27-foot length limit. Westport Beach RV Park offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus oceanfront sites. Several private parks in the area provide full hookups, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. For dumping and water fills on the road, the KOA in Willits is a reliable stop. Always top off water and dump tanks before heading into the backcountry.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=429What's inside a typical RV rental in Laytonville?
You'll find more home comforts than you might expect. Most motorhome rental Laytonville options include a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or bunk that sleeps two more, a kitchen with a 2 or 3-burner propane stove, a fridge or fridge-freezer, a microwave, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (roof AC and propane furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator for off-grid power, a TV, and Bluetooth speakers; some hosts add Starlink or hotspots for Wi-Fi (useful since Laytonville cell service can drop east of Highway 101). Check the listing's amenities list and message the host if a specific feature matters for your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Laytonville%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Laytonville rental?
RVezy hosts in the Laytonville area offer add-ons that make trip prep simple. Popular options include kitchen kits (dishes, pots, utensils), bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, generator fuel, propane refills, bike racks, and even kayaks or SUPs, perfect for the South Fork Eel River. Hosts set their own pricing for these and their own mileage policies (often 100 to 150 free miles per day with a per-mile fee after). Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's location, with delivery available for an extra fee. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking, since hosts often discount package deals.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Laytonville%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to the host. You pay using a credit or debit card during checkout, and the host receives funds after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment; the amount depends on the RV and is shown clearly on the listing before you book. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition (with the agreed fuel level, propane, and clean interior), the deposit is released back to your card after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff to make the deposit return seamless.
