Campgrounds and RV parks near Manila, CA

Walk the sandy trail from the Manila Dunes Community Center through the dunes to Manila Beach, a long stretch of open shoreline used for beachcombing and birdwatching. The Friends of the Dunes nature center at Stamps House offers self-guided trails and scheduled guided walks. Ma-le'l Dunes, a Bureau of Land Management cooperative area just north of town, has marked trails through one of the most intact dune systems on the Pacific coast. Drive south over the Samoa Bridge to Old Town Eureka for the boardwalk, Clarke Historical Museum, and Sequoia Park Zoo. Day trips reach the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Fern Canyon and the Roosevelt elk herds at Prairie Creek, and Trinidad's harbor and tide pools to the north.

The coast here is oceanic and mild year-round, with cool dry summers and long wet windy winters. Summer highs at the coast typically sit in the low 60s Fahrenheit, and overnight lows rarely drop below freezing in any month. Coastal fog is common from late spring into summer and can sit over the dunes for days at a time, while inland redwood groves a few miles east stay sunnier. Peak camping demand runs from late June through Labor Day, when private parks in Arcata, Eureka, and Trinidad fill on weekends and state park sites near the redwoods can sell out the moment the booking window opens. Spring brings rhododendron bloom in the redwoods and shoulder pricing at private parks. Fall through early winter is the rainy season, with December and January the wettest months; expect storms, surf hazards, and occasional road closures on Highway 101. Mill Creek Campground in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is open only May through September, while Burlington at Humboldt Redwoods and Elk Prairie at Prairie Creek operate year-round.

Plan for cool, damp weather even in summer. Marine layer fog can keep the dunes overcast into the afternoon, and steady wind off the Pacific is normal on the North Spit. Pack layers, a rain shell, and waterproof footwear regardless of season. Cellular coverage is reliable in Manila, Arcata, and Eureka but drops out quickly inside the redwood canyons. The shoreline near the Humboldt Bay mouth is known for sneaker waves and rip currents; keep children well back from the surf line. There are no fuel stations or grocery stores in Manila itself; the closest full services are in Arcata across the bay. State and national park campgrounds in the area generally lack hookups and dump stations, so plan refills and dumps at private RV parks before heading into the redwoods.
