Campgrounds and RV parks near Rio Linda, CA

The American River Parkway runs from Discovery Park near downtown out past Folsom Lake, with a paved trail for biking, running, and rafting put-ins. Old Sacramento State Historic Park, the California State Railroad Museum, and the State Capitol are all within a short drive and work well as half-day stops for families. Folsom Lake supports hiking, biking, running, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, waterskiing and boating, and the recreation area is laced with miles of multi-use trails. Day trips reach Apple Hill in the El Dorado foothills, the Napa and Sonoma wine regions to the west, and Lake Tahoe about two hours east on Interstate 80. Cal Expo hosts the California State Fair in summer and events throughout the year.

The Southern Sacramento Valley has a mild climate with abundant sunshine year-round, virtually cloudless summers with warm, dry days and mild nights, and a winter rainy season from November through February when over half the total annual precipitation falls. Summers are hot and dry, with daytime highs routinely in the 90s and frequent triple-digit afternoons. Sacramento averages 23 days a year of 100-degree-Fahrenheit weather, which can happen anytime from May to October, so shade, hookups with reliable power for air conditioning, and early-morning activity planning matter for summer trips. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures, wildflowers in the foothills, and lighter crowds at lake campgrounds. Each year during the fall and winter months, a seasonal closure is put in place at Peninsula Campground at Folsom Lake from October 1 through March 31, and campers are directed to Beal's Point Campground during that period. Wildfire smoke from Sierra Nevada fires can affect air quality in late summer and early fall, and winter storms occasionally bring tule fog and localized flooding along low-lying river roads.

Expect mostly paved, full-hookup RV parks rather than forested sites. Parks in the metro area typically provide water, electric, and sewer hookups, pull-through access for larger rigs, and 30/50-amp electrical service, with laundry and Wi-Fi at many properties. Some parks, including Mark J RV Park, may have vehicle age or appearance policies, so older rigs should confirm acceptance before booking. Urban campgrounds tend to have more ambient noise from nearby highways and rail lines, and shade varies site to site. Campfires are commonly restricted during high fire danger periods in summer and fall under state and local burn rules, so plan for propane cooking and check current restrictions before arrival.
