Campgrounds near McFarland, California
McFarland sits in the southern San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, about 25 miles northwest of Bakersfield and roughly 7 miles south of Delano along Highway 99. The flat agricultural setting puts RV travelers within easy reach of full-service parks in greater Bakersfield and one historic state park to the north.
The closest option with overnight camping is Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, a California State Parks unit that preserves the only California town founded, financed, and governed by African Americans. Its small campground sits behind the reconstructed townsite and accommodates both tents and RVs.
For full-hookup RV stays, the Bakersfield corridor offers Rosedale Village RV Campland on the west side, Bakersfield River Run RV Park near the Kern River, Bakersfield KOA off Highway 99, and Bakersfield RV Resort nearby. These commercial parks typically provide level pads, 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer, laundry, and Wi-Fi, making them practical bases for travelers passing through on I-5 or Highway 99.
Things to do near McFarland
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park anchors the area's sightseeing. Visitors can tour restored early-1900s buildings, including a schoolhouse, church, library, and homes, and walk or bike the townsite to learn the story of Colonel Allen Allensworth and the community founded in 1908. The park also has a visitor center, picnic areas, and wildlife viewing opportunities in the surrounding San Joaquin Valley grasslands.
In Bakersfield, families can visit the California Living Museum (CALM), Buck Owens' Crystal Palace, the Park at River Walk, and Kern River County Park. The Kern River corridor offers paddling and fishing when flows allow. Sequoia National Forest lies east of Bakersfield for day trips into the mountains, with giant sequoia groves reachable by car.

McFarland sits in a hot, arid pocket of the southern San Joaquin Valley. Summers are sweltering and dry: June through August routinely produce daily highs in the mid-90s to triple digits Fahrenheit, with essentially no rainfall from June through September. RV travelers visiting in summer should plan for shaded sites, reliable air conditioning, and limited daytime activity. Most precipitation falls between December and February, with January and February the wettest months across the Bakersfield area.
Winter days are mild, with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit and overnight lows in the low 40s, but tule fog is common in the valley and can sharply reduce visibility on Highway 99 and I-5. Spring (March through May) and fall (mid-September through November) are the most comfortable windows for camping, with warm days, cool nights, and very little rain. The Allensworth campground stays open year-round, and the commercial Bakersfield RV parks operate year-round as well.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

How to book near McFarland
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park uses the California State Parks reservation system (ReserveCalifornia), with bookings accepted up to six months in advance. The campground has 15 sites that accept tents and RVs, with concrete pads that can fit rigs up to roughly 40 feet, though RV hookups are limited or unavailable at most sites. Walk-up registration on arrival is often possible because usage tends to be light, but reservations are recommended for weekends and special events.
Bakersfield KOA, Bakersfield RV Resort, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, and Rosedale Village RV Campland take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. The KOA can also be booked through koa.com. Sites at the larger Bakersfield parks fill quickly during peak travel weekends, so reserving early is wise.
What to expect near McFarland
Expect flat valley terrain, agricultural surroundings, and easy highway access rather than scenic forest camping. Colonel Allensworth is rural and quiet, with a small developed campground, flush toilets, hot showers, covered picnic tables, fire rings, and an on-site dump station. Cell coverage in the surrounding farmland can be spotty, so downloading maps before arrival is wise.
The Bakersfield-area parks are typical commercial RV resorts: paved or graded interior roads, full hookups, laundry, and amenities like pools, playgrounds, and on-site dining at some properties. Highway noise from Highway 99 or I-5 is possible at the commercial parks. Summer heat is intense, so confirm 50-amp service if running two air conditioners.
