Mira Monte camping overview
Mira Monte sits in the Ojai Valley of Ventura County, minutes from Lake Casitas and roughly ten miles inland from the Pacific. The location puts RV travellers within a short drive of three distinct camping environments: a large freshwater reservoir with extensive hookup and basic sites, primitive oceanfront pull-outs along Highway 101, and full-service private RV parks near Ventura and Santa Paula.
Lake Casitas Recreation Area dominates the local inventory. The reservoir is managed by the Casitas Municipal Water District and operates 13 individual campgrounds with more than 400 sites, including 136 with hookups, group camps, an RV dump station, hot-water showers, and a camp store. Hawk and Osprey at Lake Casitas Recreation Area are basic loops used mostly for tents and self-contained RVs, while other loops at the lake carry water-and-electric or full hookups.
Coastal options include Emma Wood State Beach for self-contained rigs and Ventura Beach RV Resort for full hookups. Inland, Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday sits between Santa Paula and Ojai at the foot of Topa Topa Mountain.
Things to do near Mira Monte
Lake Casitas is the primary on-water draw. Largemouth bass fishing is the headline activity, and the lake is stocked with rainbow trout during the cooler months. Body contact with the water is prohibited because the reservoir supplies drinking water, so swimming, wading, paddleboards and inflatables are not allowed. Boating is restricted to inspected vessels that complete a 35-day quarantine, and boat rentals are available on site.
The recreation area also has a cafe, bike rentals, two boat ramps, disc golf, playgrounds and a seasonal water park. Downtown Ojai is about ten minutes away for groceries and resupply. On the coast, Emma Wood State Beach offers surfing, surf fishing and tidepooling, with a bike path connecting to Ventura. Families staying at Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday can use on-site activities including a zipline, ropes course and jumping pillow.

The Mira Monte area camps year-round, but conditions and demand shift sharply by season. Summer through early fall is peak: warm, dry, sunny days, full activity programming at Lake Casitas, and the highest reservation pressure. Weekend sites at Lake Casitas typically book well ahead, and a two-night minimum applies when reserving weekends, with three- or four-night minimums on holiday weekends.
Winter is the wet season for coastal Southern California. Most rainfall falls between November and April, with January and February typically the wettest months. Storm runoff can affect access roads, beach campgrounds and trails, and Emma Wood State Beach is subject to high-tide closures. Lake Casitas runs a Snowbird Program for long-term winter stays from late September through late March.
Spring brings wildflowers and green hills in the Los Padres backcountry, generally mild temperatures, and easier weekday availability before the Memorial Day rush. Fire restrictions in the surrounding national forest commonly tighten from late spring through fall.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️

How to book campgrounds near Mira Monte
Lake Casitas Recreation Area uses its own reservation system rather than Recreation.gov. Sites at Hawk, Osprey and the other lake loops can be reserved up to 180 days before the arrival date through reservations.casitaswater.org or by phone with Guest Services. Fridays and Saturdays must be booked together when reserving weekends, and some holiday weekends carry three- or four-night minimums.
Emma Wood State Beach is booked through ReserveCalifornia, the California State Parks system, online or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. Reservations open on a rolling window up to six months before the arrival date, with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. Pacific. The campground is primitive and accepts self-contained vehicles only, with tents not permitted.
Ventura Beach RV Resort and Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday are booked directly with each property, online or by phone.
What to expect at camp
Lake Casitas loops vary widely in amenity level. Some loops carry full hookups, others water and electric, while Hawk, Osprey and several other loops are basic sites with no hookups. Osprey sits on a hillside at the back of the park with lake views and pads that suit tents and smaller self-contained rigs more comfortably than large trailers. Hot-water showers are available, with tokens sold by a machine at Guest Services in bills only.
Emma Wood State Beach is primitive: no water, no hookups, no dump station, and pads of mixed asphalt, dirt and cobble. Maximum vehicle length is 40 feet. Union Pacific railroad tracks and Highway 101 run alongside the campground and bring noise. Food and cookware should be secured because of wildlife in the surrounding hills.
