Camping near Mission Hills, California
Mission Hills sits in northern Santa Barbara County on California's Central Coast, between Lompoc and the Santa Ynez Valley. The location puts RV travelers within reach of two distinct camping zones: the Gaviota coastline to the south, and the Pismo Beach and Oceano dunes area to the north. Both are reachable in well under an hour by Highway 101 or Highway 1.
The closest full-service RV base is Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground in nearby Buellton, with full hookups, cabins, vintage trailer rentals, pools, and an on-site restaurant. South along the coast, Gaviota State Park and Refugio State Beach offer state-run oceanfront camping reserved through ReserveCalifornia. North of Mission Hills, Pismo Sands RV Resort in Oceano provides paved full-hookup sites near Pismo Beach, and Pacific Dunes Ranch RV Resort sits beside the Oceano Dunes with direct sand-trail access.
Things to do near Mission Hills
The area mixes beach time, wine country, and dune recreation. Refugio State Beach has a calmer cove suited to swimming, kayaking, and tide pooling, while Gaviota State Park features a secluded sandy beach with a backcountry that offers many opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and natural hot springs, plus a railroad-trestle landmark above the sand. Inland, Buellton and Solvang offer wineries, the historic Danish village, and the Old Mission La Purísima near Lompoc. To the north, the Oceano Dunes are open to street-legal vehicles and OHVs in designated areas, and Pacific Dunes Ranch RV Resort connects directly to dune trails. Families based at Flying Flags can use on-site pools and a playground without leaving the resort.

The Central Coast runs on a Mediterranean rhythm. Late spring through early fall is the busiest window: this state beach is hugely popular, so expect crowds and fully booked campsites through spring and summer. Coastal mornings are often foggy from May into July, a local pattern sometimes called June gloom, with afternoons clearing.
Summer and early fall are the warmest and driest months and the best stretch for swimming and dune trips. September tends to be the warmest period, when average temperatures fluctuate between a high near 75°F and a low near 60°F. Fall shoulder season offers mild weather with thinner crowds.
Winter is the wet season. Although the campground is open year-round, Refugio is subject to park closures during the rainy season from December through March. From October 1st to March 31st, camping at Gaviota State Park is unavailable. Private RV resorts like Flying Flags, Pismo Sands, and Pacific Dunes Ranch stay open year-round. Wind is a year-round factor at exposed beach sites, especially Gaviota.

How to book campgrounds near Mission Hills
State park sites use a single system. From April 1st to November 30th, Refugio State Beach reservations can be made through ReserveCalifornia.com or by calling 1-800-444-7275, day-of or up to six months to the day of the arrival date; from December 1st to March 31st, regular campsites are available on a walk-in basis only. Gaviota uses the same site from April 1st to September 30th, also six months ahead, and from October 1st to March 31st camping is unavailable. Summer weekends frequently sell out the moment the booking window opens, so set a calendar reminder.
Private resorts book directly. Flying Flags, Pismo Sands RV Resort, and Pacific Dunes Ranch RV Resort each take reservations through their own websites or by phone. Check site length limits at booking time, since several state-park loops cap RVs around 25 to 27 feet.
What to expect
Expect a coastal climate that stays cool even in summer, so pack layers regardless of season. State park sites are rustic: picnic table, fire ring, shared restrooms with showers, and no RV hookups. Cell reception at Gaviota is limited. Heavy winds at Gaviota can reach up to 50 miles per hour with the potential to snap tent poles, and Gaviota sites accommodate tents, trailers up to 25 feet, and RVs up to 27 feet long. Dogs are not allowed on state-park beaches or trails and must be leashed in camp.
Private resorts offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Flying Flags has a restaurant, pools, and family programming. Pismo Sands provides paved full-hookup pads. Pacific Dunes Ranch is the closest option for walking onto the Oceano Dunes. Stock up on groceries in Lompoc, Buellton, or Pismo Beach before heading to the coast.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mission Hills, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mission Hills, CA?
An RV rental in Mission Hills fits a wider range of budgets than most travelers expect. On RVezy, you can typically find travel trailers from around $95 to $160 per night, campervans from $130 to $215, and Class C motorhomes from $185 to $300. Larger Class A coaches run higher, especially during summer. To find a cheap RV rental in Mission Hills without giving up comfort, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of March, April, or October, and look for hosts who include generous mileage. Filtering for a travel trailer with delivery often beats the total cost of a large motorhome plus fuel, since you save on gas heading out to the coast on Highway 101.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mission%20Hills%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Mission Hills, California?
Good news for first-timers: a regular California driver's license (or any valid US/Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Mission Hills. No commercial driver's license, no RV endorsement, no special test, even for larger Class A and Class C motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy will verify your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (under $20) from your home auto club before your flight. Most guests are surprised how quickly the verification step wraps up, often the same day they book their Santa Barbara County RV trip.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/What protection is included when I rent an RV in Mission Hills?
You are covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RVezy booking in Mission Hills includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on enjoying the Santa Ynez Valley wine country instead of worrying about what-ifs. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose between different coverage levels at checkout based on how much peace of mind you want, the host does not pick this, you do. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection for renters. If it is your first time renting an RV in Mission Hills, upgrading to a higher protection tier often costs less than a tank of fuel and lets you relax on the drive up to Lake Cachuma.

Booking is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, and there is a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that window, how much you get back depends on how far in advance of the trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps with a refund or travel credit so you are not left stranded. You will not see a confusing patchwork of host-specific rules, it is the same clear framework across every listing. Book early to lock in the best rigs for summer weekends near Refugio State Beach, you will still have flexibility if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Mission Hills RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Mission Hills is one of the most popular searches on RVezy, and plenty of local hosts welcome dogs. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see rigs ready for furry co-pilots. Some hosts charge a small pet fee or extra cleaning deposit, which is clearly listed on the booking page, no surprises. Once you're on the road, dogs are welcome on-leash at Gaviota State Park, El Capitán State Beach, and most sites at Cachuma Lake Recreation Area. Pro tip: Arroyo Hondo Preserve and the dog beach at Arroyo Burro near Santa Barbara are favorites for a mid-trip romp before heading back to the RV.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29672Can the RV be delivered to me in Mission Hills?
Yes, RV delivery in Mission Hills is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into Santa Barbara Airport or LAX and would rather not drive a big rig right away. Many RVezy hosts will deliver to your campsite, vacation rental, or driveway, set up the RV, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on distance and are clearly shown on the listing before you book. Book delivery straight to your site at Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton or El Capitan State Beach, you will skip the learning curve entirely and start your motorhome rental Mission Hills vacation with a glass of Santa Ynez Valley wine in hand.

Some of the best campgrounds near Mission Hills include River Park in Lompoc (just minutes away, with hookups and a fishing lake), Flying Flags RV Resort and Campground in Buellton (resort-style with a pool, about 20 minutes east), El Capitan State Beach (oceanfront sites about 35 minutes south), Refugio State Beach (palm-lined and iconic), and Cachuma Lake Recreation Area (great for families and stargazing). For RV camping Mission Hills travelers love, River Park is the easiest first-night stop. State beach sites along Highway 101 fill quickly in summer, so book the moment your dates are firm through ReserveCalifornia.

Spring (March to May) brings wildflower blooms across the Santa Ynez Valley with highs typically in the 65 to 75 F range. Summer (June to September) is warm and dry, usually 75 to 85 F, though mornings often start with the famous coastal marine layer that burns off by late morning. For the best balance of weather, availability, and value, plan your Mission Hills RV trip for late April through early June or in October.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=34.6888&lon=-120.4398I've never rented an RV before, will I actually be okay driving one?
You'll be fine, and you're far from alone. The majority of first time renting an RV guests in Mission Hills choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer because they drive much like a large truck or van. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, water systems, dump procedure, and driving tips before you leave the driveway. You can also message your host anytime during the trip with questions. Pro tip: for your first day, plan a short, scenic drive like Mission Hills to Solvang on Highway 246, gentle roads, flat terrain, and a Danish bakery waiting at the end. You'll feel like a pro by the time you park.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Take a deep breath, you are covered. Every RVezy rental in Mission Hills includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one call away whether you have a flat tire on Highway 101, a dead battery at Cachuma Lake, or you have locked the keys inside at Refugio Beach. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Your host is usually just a message away too and knows the rig inside out. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave and snap a photo of the RV plate and VIN, it speeds everything up if you ever need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008794-Roadside-assistance-overviewCan I take my Mission Hills RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Cross-state travel is wide open, you can absolutely drive your Mission Hills RV rental into Nevada (Las Vegas is about 5.5 hours), Arizona (Grand Canyon in roughly 9 hours), or Oregon up the coast. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the individual host and the protection package selected, so message the host through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. Pro tip: for a classic RV road trip from Mission Hills, head north on Highway 1 through Big Sur to Monterey, it's the kind of drive people fly across the world to do.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripHow much should I budget for fuel on a Mission Hills RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. California gas prices typically run higher than the national average, so expect to budget accordingly when you rent an RV in Mission Hills. Travel trailers towed by a truck average around 10 to 14 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop through Santa Barbara wine country in a Class C, plan on roughly $180 to $240 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Buellton or Santa Maria where prices tend to be lower than Santa Barbara proper, and use the GasBuddy app to spot the cheapest diesel along Highway 101.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mission Hills?
Sooner than you'd think, but it's very doable with a little planning. California State Parks like El Capitán, Refugio, and Gaviota release reservations exactly six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and oceanfront sites for summer weekends often book within minutes. For private parks like Flying Flags RV Resort or Lompoc's River Park, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for the six-month mark at 8:00 AM Pacific and have your ReserveCalifornia login ready, that's how locals score the prime beachfront pull-throughs for a family RV trip Mission Hills weekend in July.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Mission Hills?
You'll find driving here refreshingly manageable. Mission Hills sits just off Highway 101 with wide lanes, gentle grades, and far less traffic than LA or the Bay Area. The main routes you'll use, Highway 101, Highway 246 to Solvang, and Highway 1 to Lompoc, are all RV-friendly with plenty of turnouts. Watch for coastal fog (locals call it the marine layer) on summer mornings near Gaviota Pass, and avoid the narrow, winding Figueroa Mountain Road in a large motorhome. Pro tip: cross Gaviota Pass before 10:00 AM or after 7:00 PM to avoid the busiest stretch, and you'll have the coastline practically to yourself heading south.

You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds near Mission Hills offer a strong mix of hookups and services, Flying Flags RV Resort has full 30/50-amp hookups, a pool, hot tub, and laundry; Lompoc's River Park offers full hookups, fishing, and showers; and Cachuma Lake has partial hookups, a general store, and boat rentals. California State Beaches like El Capitán and Refugio typically offer water and a dump station but limited hookups, perfect if your RV has solar or a generator. For where to park an RV in Mission Hills overnight without a campground, dump stations are available at Flying Flags and Cachuma Lake. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any state beach, the next reliable fill-up is often 30+ miles away.

nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Mission Hills RV rental?

Some offer pet packages with bowls and beds for a pet-friendly RV rental Mission Hills setup. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Mission Hills, Lompoc, or Santa Maria, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by listing, anywhere from 100 miles per day to fully unlimited, and are listed clearly on the booking page. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kitchen kit, you'll arrive at El Capitán with nothing to unpack but your sunscreen.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=601How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is all handled securely through the platform, no cash and no awkward third-party transfers. When you book your RV rental in Mission Hills, you pay the rental total through RVezy using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip, the amount is shown on each listing so there are no surprises, and it is released after the RV is returned in the same condition. Do a quick video walkaround with your host at both pickup and drop-off, time-stamped footage protects everyone and is the best way to ensure your full deposit is returned quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Mission Hills a good base for a campervan trip up the California coast?
It is one of the best-kept secrets on the Central Coast. A campervan rental in Mission Hills puts you right on Highway 101, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and the Bay Area, with easy access to Pacific Coast Highway 1 north through San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, and Big Sur. Compact campervans are perfect here because they fit in smaller state beach campsites that turn larger rigs away, and parking in Santa Barbara or Solvang for the day is straightforward. From Mission Hills you can be at Jalama Beach in about 45 minutes or wine tasting in Los Olivos in 30. Build a 5-day loop, Mission Hills to Pismo to Big Sur to Cambria and back, it is the kind of West Coast trip people dream about.
