Campgrounds near Moorpark overview
Moorpark sits in eastern Ventura County, within easy reach of inland lakes, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the Pacific coast. RV travelers based here can pick between freshwater reservoir camping, a full-service private resort, and state-park sites along the ocean, all roughly 30 to 60 minutes from town.
To the north, Lake Piru Recreation Area sits in Ventura County about an hour from the Los Angeles area, with a reservoir that supports fishing, boating, water skiing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. Northwest of Moorpark, Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday is a private resort set against the Topatopa Mountains, with shaded sites, mountain views, and dark night skies. South and southwest, the Santa Monica Mountains meet the sea at Point Mugu State Park, where Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp and Thornhill Broome Family Camp offer beach access and canyon hiking. Farther down Pacific Coast Highway, Leo Carrillo State Park sits about 28 miles northwest of Santa Monica with 1.5 miles of shoreline popular for swimming, surfing, windsurfing, and surf fishing.
Things to do near Moorpark
Water activities anchor most trips. At Lake Piru Recreation Area, campers can launch boats, fish, and try kayaking or paddle boarding, with a lakeside disc golf course, horseshoe pits, volleyball nets, and shaded picnic areas on land. Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday adds family-resort amenities for day use between excursions. Coastal options are strong: at Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp and Thornhill Broome Family Camp, visitors swim, surf, fish, and walk the beach, with tidepool exploring and miles of canyon trails climbing into the Santa Monica Mountains. At Leo Carrillo State Park, the 1.5-mile shoreline offers swimming, surf fishing, windsurfing, beach combing, plus tide pools, coastal caves, and reefs, and the park's backcountry trail network extends into the surrounding mountains.

The region has a Mediterranean climate, so the camping calendar is shaped by rainfall, fire conditions, and coastal fog rather than snow. Most campgrounds operate year-round, but demand and access shift sharply by season.
Spring through early fall is peak. Coastal state-park sites book up quickly, and Leo Carrillo State Park and the Point Mugu campgrounds are busiest from late spring through early fall and on holiday weekends. Coastal fog is common along the Point Mugu and Malibu shoreline in late spring and early summer, while inland sites at Lake Piru Recreation Area and Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday stay sunny and hot. Summer afternoons at Lake Piru run warm, and shade and water access become priorities.
Fall brings the strongest fire-weather concern as Santa Ana winds dry out the canyons. Winter is the wet season and the lowest-demand window. Coastal parks remain open year-round, but storm closures and road damage along Pacific Coast Highway are possible after heavy rain, so travelers should check park status before heading out.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️
Tina F. - Oct 2026
Had a great time and our trailer was perfect. Oscar was wonderful as well.

The RV was great! Had everything we needed. Arie is amazing! Picked us up and dropped us off. He was always available if we had any questions during our trip.

What to expect at camp
Expect a mix of full-service and primitive setups. Lake Piru offers level tree-shaded sites with clean restrooms, coin-operated hot showers, a fully stocked store, paved roads, and a dump station, and motor homes, trailers, and truck campers are welcome. Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp at Point Mugu has potable water, flush toilets, and a dump station but no hookups, and trailers and motorhomes are limited to about 31 feet. Thornhill Broome Family Camp is more rustic, with limited facilities along the beach. Leo Carrillo State Park has 135 campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 31 feet, with 46 electrical-hookup sites, plus a camp store, potable water, flush toilets, outside showers, trash collection, and a dump station. Mountain lions and other wildlife are present in the Santa Monica Mountains, so standard food-storage precautions apply.
