Oak View camping overview
Oak View is a small unincorporated community in Ventura County, California, tucked along Highway 33 between Ventura and Ojai. The town sits in the Ventura River valley, just a few miles from Lake Casitas and roughly a dozen miles from the Pacific coast at Ventura. That position makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want to combine lake camping, coastal beach camping, and day trips into Ojai or the Los Padres National Forest backcountry.
The immediate area offers a mix of public and private campgrounds. Lake Casitas Recreation Area, just minutes from Oak View, runs more than a dozen campgrounds around the reservoir, including Hawk and Osprey. On the coast, Emma Wood State Beach provides oceanfront sites for self-contained RVs, while Ventura Beach RV Resort and Evergreen RV Park serve travelers who want full hookups closer to town. Mild temperatures year round make Oak View workable as a shoulder-season and winter destination.
Things to do near Oak View
Lake Casitas anchors most outdoor activity in the Oak View area. The lake is a no body contact reservoir, so swimming and wading are not allowed, but boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking are permitted. The lake is known for its bass fishing. Hiking, cycling, and wildlife viewing are also popular around the recreation area, and a model aircraft flying field sits inside the park. Downtown Ojai, with its shops, tasting rooms, and the Ojai Valley Trail, is roughly five miles away. On the coast, Emma Wood State Beach and the Ventura Pier add surfing, beach walks, and tidepooling, and the bike path between Ventura and Ojai passes close to several campgrounds.

Oak View is a year-round camping destination, but conditions and campground availability shift with the seasons. Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and comfortable daytime temperatures, and it is one of the best windows for hiking around Lake Casitas before summer heat builds inland. Summer is peak season at both lake and coastal campgrounds. Lake Casitas sites at Hawk and Osprey book out well in advance for weekends, and Ventura Beach RV Resort fills quickly on holidays. A two night minimum applies on weekends at Lake Casitas, and Fridays and Saturdays must be reserved together.
Fall offers warm, dry weather with thinner crowds, and is often the most pleasant time for RV travel in the valley. Winter is the wet season, with most rain falling between December and March. High tides during the winter months often close the Emma Wood State Beach campground. Note that Emma Wood State Beach North Beach is closed to camping and day use from August 25, 2025 through June 2026 for construction, so confirm status before booking.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️

How to book campgrounds near Oak View
Lake Casitas Recreation Area uses its own reservation system rather than ReserveCalifornia or Recreation.gov. Bookings for Hawk, Osprey, and the other Casitas campgrounds are made through reservations.casitaswater.org or by phone with the park reservation office. Hawk and Osprey are tent-and-RV campgrounds without hookups, while other loops at Casitas offer partial or full hookups. Emma Wood State Beach and the Ventura River Group Camp are booked through ReserveCalifornia. Camping reservations can be made up to seven months and no less than 48 hours in advance by calling 800-444-7275 or online. Ventura Beach RV Resort and Evergreen RV Park are private parks; reserve directly through the operator websites, especially for summer weekends.
What to expect when camping near Oak View
Expect a wide range of camping styles within a short drive. At Lake Casitas, some campsites have hookups and each campsite has a table, fire ring and grate. Amenities include potable water, flush toilets, vault toilets, hot water showers, trash collection and an RV dump station. Hawk and Osprey are basic loops with dirt pads and chemical toilets, with showers a short distance away. Emma Wood State Beach offers primitive camping for fully self contained vehicles only, tents are not permitted, and there is no water, restrooms, electricity, fire rings, or dump station. Ventura Beach RV Resort offers full hookup RV sites, free wifi, showers and restrooms, laundry, a dump station, an outdoor pool and hot tub, and a playground. Freeway and railroad noise is common at the coastal sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Oak View, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Oak View, CA?
RV rental in Oak View is often more affordable than renting closer to Los Angeles or Santa Barbara. On RVezy, you can typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $325, and luxury Class A rigs at $300 and up. Because Oak View sits between Ventura and Ojai, hosts here often price competitively against coastal markets. To score a cheap RV rental in Oak View, look for midweek pickups, book outside major Ojai event weekends, and filter for travel trailers, which are typically the best value for couples and small families. Pro tip: many hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, so a five-night Lake Casitas trip can come in well under the daily rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oak+View%2C+CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Oak View, California?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in Oak View, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. California only requires a non-commercial Class B license for motorhomes over 40 feet long or over 26,000 pounds, and a non-commercial Class A for trailers over 10,000 pounds (or fifth wheels over 15,000 pounds). Almost every RV listed on RVezy in the Oak View area falls well under those limits, including campervans, Class C motorhomes, and standard travel trailers. You must be at least 25 to rent on RVezy, and you'll upload a photo of your license during the booking process for quick ID verification. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're ready to roll up Highway 33.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/license-classes-and-requirements/What protection and roadside help come with my Oak View RV rental?
Every RV rental in Oak View booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the Los Padres National Forest with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and it acts as a financial safety net for most physical damage to the RV. If you get a flat on winding Highway 33 north of Ojai, lock the keys inside at Lake Casitas, or need a tow back from Wheeler Gorge, one call to RVezy roadside dispatches help any time of day. That built-in safety net is a big reason first time renters feel confident booking a motorhome rental in Oak View.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Oak View RV booking?
Yes, and RVezy makes it straightforward. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a short grace period right after you book during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that, the refund amount depends on how far in advance of your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so your plans aren't left in limbo. If something comes up before your Oak View RV trip, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options, so booking now is low risk.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Oak View RV trip?
Absolutely, Oak View is one of the most dog friendly basecamps in Ventura County. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Oak View hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats), and you can filter listings on RVezy for Pet-Friendly to see them instantly. Once you're here, the 9-mile paved Ojai Valley Trail runs right through Oak View and is perfect for leashed dogs, and Lake Casitas Recreation Area allows pets on a 6-foot leash (just keep them at least 50 feet from the shoreline, since the lake is a drinking water reservoir). Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size limits. Local insider tip: the dog beach at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura is a 15-minute drive south for a post-hike romp.
parks.venturacounty.gov/county-parks/ojai-valley-trail/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Oak View?
Yes, RV delivery in Oak View is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if you're new to RVing. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Lake Casitas Recreation Area, Wheeler Gorge Campground, Foster Park, or even your vacation rental driveway in Ojai, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see hosts who offer it, and check each listing for the delivery radius and per-mile fee. Pro tip: book delivery to Lake Casitas (about 6 miles from Oak View) so you can spend your first afternoon kayaking and biking instead of learning how to back into a site.
casitaswater.org/camping-reservationsHow far can I drive on a typical Oak View RV rental?
You'll have plenty of range for a classic Southern California road trip from Oak View. Most hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage upgrade for a flat fee, which is worth it if you're heading north to Big Sur or south to San Diego. Popular distances from Oak View: Santa Barbara (about 35 miles), Malibu (about 50 miles), Channel Islands Harbor (about 20 miles), Joshua Tree National Park (about 215 miles), Sequoia National Park (about 250 miles), and Big Sur (about 230 miles). Each listing shows its mileage policy in the pricing breakdown, so you can compare before booking. If you're sticking close to Lake Casitas and Ojai, you'll barely scratch your included miles.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oak+View%2C+CaliforniaWhere can I camp in an RV near Oak View?
You're spoiled for choice. The crown jewel is Lake Casitas Recreation Area (6 miles away, 400+ sites with full and partial hookups, dump station, and hot showers), reservable directly through casitaswater.org. Head north on Highway 33 about 20 minutes and you'll hit Wheeler Gorge Campground in the Los Padres National Forest, a shady creekside favorite. Rose Valley Campground sits deeper in the mountains with primitive sites and waterfall trails nearby. For ocean views, Faria Beach County Park and Emma Wood State Beach are both about 20 minutes south. Ventura Ranch KOA in Santa Paula is a kid-friendly option with cabins and a pool. Best campgrounds near Oak View book up fast, so reserve as early as you can.
reservations.casitaswater.org/When is the best time of year for an Oak View RV trip?
Oak View has one of the most forgiving climates in California, so honestly, almost any season works. The sweet spot is April through June and September through early November, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s and rainfall is rare. Summer (July to August) is warm and dry with highs in the mid 80s, ideal for Lake Casitas swimming areas and beach day trips, though inland trails get hot by midday. Winter is mild (highs 60 to 70, lows in the 40s) and green, with occasional rain storms between December and March, perfect for snowbirds escaping colder states. The Lake Casitas Snowbird Program even runs roughly September through March for extended winter stays.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Oak+View&state=CA&site=LOXI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Oak View?
You'll do great, and Oak View is one of the easier places in California for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to use the leveling jacks, awning, water system, propane, generator, and dump valves. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. Oak View itself sits on a quiet stretch of Highway 33 with wide lanes and gentle grades, so you're not thrown into city traffic. Stick to Lake Casitas and the Ojai Valley on day one to build confidence before tackling Highway 150's curves or the climb up to Pine Mountain. Pro tip: book delivery for your first RV rental so the host parks and levels it for you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Oak View RV trip?
You're covered, day or night. Every Oak View RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and mechanical issues get handled quickly. Whether you're stuck on Highway 33 heading toward Rose Valley or pulled over on the 101 near Ventura, one call dispatches a technician or tow. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app and can usually troubleshoot small issues like a tripped breaker or finicky water pump in minutes. Cell coverage is solid throughout the Ojai Valley and along the coast, so help is rarely more than a quick call away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oak View RV rental on a longer road trip to other states or Canada?
Yes, Oak View is a fantastic launchpad for a longer RV road trip. Popular routes include Highway 1 north to Big Sur and Monterey (around 5 hours), the Eastern Sierra via Highway 395 to Mammoth and June Lake (about 6 hours), the desert loop through Joshua Tree and Death Valley, or a coastal run south to San Diego (about 3.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host's insurance, so message them through the listing before you book to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: ask hosts about one-way or extended-trip pricing upfront so there are no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Oak View RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget since California gas prices are among the highest in the country. Regular unleaded in Ventura County typically runs around $4.50 to $5.20 per gallon, with diesel often a bit higher (check current prices before you go). Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches usually 6 to 9 mpg. For a 4-night Lake Casitas trip with day drives around Ojai and Ventura, most families spend $80 to $200 on fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Ventura or Oxnard before climbing Highway 33 north, where stations are sparse and pricier. Costco in Oxnard often has the cheapest gas in the area.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=CAHow far in advance should I book a campground near Oak View?
Earlier is always better, especially for Lake Casitas Recreation Area, which is the most in-demand campground in the area. Reservations open through reservations.casitaswater.org, and summer weekends, holidays, and the Snowbird Program window (late September through late March) book months ahead. Aim to reserve Lake Casitas 3 to 6 months out for peak season; weekends require a 2-night minimum and holiday weekends a 3 to 4 night minimum. Wheeler Gorge and Rose Valley campgrounds in the Los Padres National Forest go through Recreation.gov and open 6 months ahead. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) are far easier to snag, and you'll have the Lake Casitas trails practically to yourself.
reservations.casitaswater.org/What are the local driving conditions like around Oak View?
Driving conditions around Oak View are generally easy and scenic. Highway 33 is the main artery through town, a wide two lane road with gentle curves connecting Ventura to Ojai. The climb north of Ojai toward Rose Valley and Pine Mountain gets twisty with steep grades and a few tunnels, so take it slow in a larger motorhome. Watch for cyclists along the Ojai Valley Trail crossings, and be aware that Highway 150 over the Casitas Pass toward Carpinteria has tight switchbacks better suited to smaller rigs. Winter rains can trigger rock slides and occasional closures on Highway 33 north, and summer brings wildfire risk, so check vcemergency.com before your trip. Coastal mornings often start with marine layer fog that burns off by 10 a.m.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Oak View?
Local campgrounds run the full spectrum, from full-hookup luxury to back-to-nature primitive. Lake Casitas Recreation Area offers 13 campgrounds with about 136 hookup sites (water, electric, some full), hot token showers, flush toilets, an RV dump station, drinking water fills, a camp store, and a seasonal water park. Wheeler Gorge has potable water and vault toilets but no hookups, perfect if you're self-contained. Ventura Beach RV Resort and Ventura Ranch KOA both provide full hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. For RV camping Oak View travelers love, plan to dump tanks and fill fresh water at Lake Casitas (open to the public for a small fee) or at most full-service parks along the 101 corridor. Pro tip: bring quarters or small bills for shower tokens at Casitas.
casitaswater.org/campingWhat features and amenities come inside the RV rentals?
Most RVs you'll rent in Oak View come fully equipped for comfortable camping. Expect a queen or king bed, dinette and/or sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 depending on size), a kitchen with a propane stove, microwave, and fridge/freezer, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a propane furnace, and a TV. Many include a generator or solar setup for boondocking, USB charging ports, an outdoor awning, and outdoor speakers. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes have seatbelts for travel passengers. Wi-Fi inside the RV is hit or miss, but most local campgrounds offer it and cell signal is generally strong throughout the Ojai Valley. Check each listing's amenities list, and message the host if a specific feature like a bike rack or child booster matters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oak+View%2C+CaliforniaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Oak View RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Oak View offer all kinds of helpful add-ons to make your trip smoother. Common options include kitchen kits with dishes and cookware, linen and bedding packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, BBQs, and pet packages with bowls and tie-outs. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, usually priced per mile each way, and many hosts include the first tank of propane free. Pickup and dropoff typically happens at the host's location in Oak View or nearby Ventura, with afternoon pickup and morning return windows. Mileage policies generally allow 100 to 150 miles per night, with unlimited mileage available as an upgrade on many listings.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oak+View%2C+CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform when you book (never directly to the host in cash) using a major credit or debit card. Your total includes the nightly rental rate, mileage and generator fees if applicable, any add-ons you select, the service fee, and your chosen protection plan. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup and released after a clean, on-time return with no damage. To protect your deposit, do a thorough pre-trip walkthrough video with your host, photograph the interior and exterior at pickup, return the RV on time with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Oak View a good base for a family RV trip?
It's hard to beat Oak View for a family RV trip in Southern California. You're 15 minutes from the beaches of Ventura, 6 miles from Lake Casitas (with its summer water park, lazy river, bike rentals, and 400+ campsites), and a quick drive to downtown Ojai's family friendly shops and ice cream. The flat, paved Ojai Valley Trail starts right in Oak View, perfect for kids on bikes or scooters. Day-trip the Channel Islands via ferry from Ventura Harbor for dolphin sightings, or head 35 miles up the coast to Santa Barbara Zoo. Use the RVezy Sleeps filter to find rigs that fit your crew, and consider Pet-Friendly and Delivery filters for an even smoother launch. Local insider tip: Friday Farmers Market in Ojai is a must.
