Campgrounds near Redway, California
Redway sits in southern Humboldt County along the South Fork Eel River, two miles north of Garberville and within easy reach of California's coast redwood country. The town functions as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the Avenue of the Giants, and the Lost Coast. Highway 101 runs straight through the area, making access from the Bay Area or Oregon straightforward.
Campground options near Redway range from full-hookup private parks to old-growth redwood state park sites. Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park sits just south of town on Redwood Drive. A short drive south on Highway 101 reaches Benbow KOA Holiday and Benbow Lake State Recreational Area, both set along the river near the historic Benbow Inn. Further south near Piercy, Richardson Grove State Park protects some of the southernmost old-growth coast redwoods. North along the Avenue of the Giants, Giant Redwoods RV and Cabin Destination offers wooded sites near Myers Flat. Together these properties cover most RV size classes and trip styles.
Things to do near Redway
The Avenue of the Giants is the headline drive, a 32-mile route through Humboldt Redwoods State Park with auto-tour pullouts, short interpretive loops, and groves of 300-foot trees. The park contains over 100 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, plus river access on the South Fork Eel for swimming, fishing, and paddling in summer when flows drop. Richardson Grove State Park adds a walk-through tree exhibit and additional old-growth loops suitable for families with younger kids. Benbow Lake State Recreational Area is the closest day-use spot for picnicking and wildlife watching along the river; since the Benbow Dam was removed, the stretch functions as free-flowing river rather than a seasonal reservoir. Shelter Cove and the Lost Coast lie roughly an hour west via Briceland Thorn Road for tide-pooling and black-sand beaches.

Summer is the prime RV season. From mid-June through Labor Day, river levels drop, daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, and the family campgrounds at the area state parks are all open. This is also when sites fill fastest: peak weekends at Benbow Lake State Recreational Area and Richardson Grove State Park often book to capacity, and the Oak Flat unit at Richardson Grove only operates from mid-June through mid-September.
Spring and fall are quieter and milder. Wildflowers appear March through May, but rivers can run high and cold into early summer. Fall delivers clear days, low fire-season smoke risk in most years, and easier last-minute availability.
Winter is wet. December is typically the wettest month, the area averages roughly 60 inches of rain per year, and the Madrone Campground at Richardson Grove shifts to walk-in self-registration with cash or check at the park entrance during the off season. Many private parks stay open year-round, but expect storm closures on Highway 101 access roads during atmospheric river events.
How to book campgrounds near Redway
California State Parks sites, including Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Richardson Grove State Park, and Benbow Lake State Recreational Area, are booked through ReserveCalifornia at reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. The system uses a rolling window: new inventory opens each day at 8 a.m. Pacific Time, six months in advance of the arrival date, and reservations can be made as late as two days before arrival, subject to availability. Maximum stay at Richardson Grove is 15 days within the summer season. State park sites in the area have a 30-foot RV length limit and a 24-foot trailer limit, which rules out larger Class A rentals. Private parks such as Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park, Benbow KOA Holiday, and Giant Redwoods RV and Cabin Destination book directly through their own websites or call centers and typically accommodate longer rigs and full hookups.
What to expect on the ground
Cell service is patchy. Coverage is reasonable in Redway and Garberville but drops out inside Richardson Grove and across much of the Avenue of the Giants, so download maps and confirmation codes before arrival. State park sites typically include a picnic table, fire ring, and food storage box; black bears are active and food must be locked up. Coin-operated showers and flush toilets are standard at the developed state campgrounds. Private parks add full hookups, dump stations, and on-site stores. Firewood should be purchased on site rather than gathered or imported. Dogs are allowed in campgrounds on leash but, except for service animals, are not permitted on state park trails. Summer wildfire restrictions can limit open flames; check current fire-season status with the park before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Redway, CA
How much does an RV rental in Redway cost, and when can I find the best deals?
RV rental in Redway is more affordable than you might expect for a trip through redwood country. On RVezy, most travel trailers run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes typically go for $175 to $300, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $450. The best window for a cheap RV rental in Redway is mid-September through early June, when summer crowds along the Avenue of the Giants thin out and hosts often lower their rates. Book a weeklong trip and many Redway hosts offer a weekly discount of 10 to 20 percent. Pair that with a midweek pickup to unlock the best value on the Redwood Coast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Redway,CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Redway, California?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Redway, California. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or travel trailer available on RVezy, even the big Class A rigs you might take down Highway 101. You'll just need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens quickly through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from abroad to explore the Avenue of the Giants? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you fly in, usually for under $25. That's it. Most first-timers are surprised how simple the licensing side really is.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-05/What kind of protection comes with my Redway RV rental?
Every RV rental in Redway booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the backroads to Shelter Cove or cruise the Avenue of the Giants with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort at checkout (hosts don't set this, you do). Review the coverage options carefully before booking, especially if you're tackling the narrow, twisty stretches of Briceland Thorn Road on the way to the Lost Coast.

Booking your Redway RV trip is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Depending on how far in advance you cancel, you may be eligible for a partial or full refund, and the full details are available on the RVezy Help Center. The RVezy support team is available to help if your plans change. Book early for peak Avenue of the Giants weekends in July and August, knowing the cancellation policy gives you flexibility if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Redway?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Redway is easy to find on RVezy by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Many local hosts welcome well-behaved pets, sometimes for a small cleaning fee. Once you're on the road, Dean Creek Resort right in Redway allows leashed dogs throughout the campground, and Benbow KOA up the road is also dog-friendly. Keep in mind that dogs aren't allowed on trails inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park (except service animals), but they are welcome on paved roads, in picnic areas, and at developed campgrounds. Pack a long lead so your dog can enjoy time near the Eel River while you relax.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Redway?
Yes, RV delivery in Redway is one of the most popular options on RVezy and a big help for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the RV straight to your campsite at Dean Creek Resort, Benbow KOA, or a site inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. You skip the stress of towing or maneuvering a large rig down Highway 101 and step right into vacation mode. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile round-trip. Filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your campground name to get an exact quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Redway,CaliforniaHow far can I drive, and are RV rentals with unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of room to roam. Most Redway hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and a growing number offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a longer Redwood Coast loop. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each. From Redway you're about 7 miles to the southern entrance of the Avenue of the Giants, 23 miles to Shelter Cove on the Lost Coast, 65 miles to Eureka, and roughly 200 miles (about 4 hours) to San Francisco. If you're planning a multi-stop RV road trip from Redway up to Crescent City or down to the Bay Area, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to keep costs predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Redway,CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Redway for an RV trip?
The best campgrounds near Redway put you right under the redwoods within a short drive of your pickup spot. Dean Creek Resort in Redway has year-round full hookups along the Eel River. Burlington Campground inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park sits next to the visitor center on the Avenue of the Giants. Hidden Springs Campground (also in Humboldt Redwoods) offers shaded sites among second-growth redwoods. Richardson Grove State Park, about 10 miles south, has riverside RV sites under towering old-growth. Benbow KOA in Garberville features full hookups, a pool, and a lake. State park sites have varying RV length limits depending on the loop, so check each site's posted maximum before you book through ReserveCalifornia.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425When is the best time of year for RV camping in Redway?
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for RV camping in Redway. May through October typically brings daytime highs in the 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and cool nights in the 50s, ideal for redwood hikes and Eel River swims. July and August are warmest and busiest. September and early October are a local favorite: warm days, smaller crowds, and salmon starting to run in the Eel. Winters are mild but very wet, with heavy rainfall blanketing the forest in moss and ferns, and many hosts rent year-round if you're up for a quieter, atmospheric trip. Pack layers: mornings under the redwoods can start in the 40s even in midsummer.
weather.gov/eka/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Redway?
You'll be just fine, especially around Redway. Your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering everything from leveling and slide-outs to the propane and gray-water systems, and they're a text away during your whole trip. The roads here are actually friendlier than most first-timers expect: Highway 101 is a four-lane freeway with wide shoulders, and the Avenue of the Giants (State Route 254) has a 35 mph posted speed in many sections, gentle curves, and pull-outs every mile or so. If it's your first time renting an RV, start with a smaller Class C or campervan rental Redway hosts offer, both easy to handle. Pro tip: pick up midmorning so you have plenty of daylight for your first short drive.
dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-1What happens if I get a flat tire or something breaks down?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you get a flat on Highway 101, run out of propane near Phillipsville, or need a tow off Briceland Thorn Road, help is one call away. Your host is also a great first resource for quirks specific to their rig and typically responds quickly through the RVezy app. Cell service can be spotty in the deep redwood groves, so save the roadside number in your phone and screenshot it before you head out. The closest service towns are Garberville (about 2 miles south) and Fortuna (about 45 miles north), both with auto parts stores for quick fixes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Redway RV rental on a longer road trip up or down the coast?
Yes, an RV road trip from Redway is one of the best ways to see the West Coast, and most hosts welcome longer journeys. Popular routes include heading north about 65 miles to Eureka and Arcata, continuing another 85 miles to Redwood National Park and Crescent City, or driving roughly 200 miles south to San Francisco via the Highway 101 redwood corridor. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, and trips into Oregon or beyond may be allowed depending on the host, so message them through the listing before booking to confirm. A 7-to-10-day Redway-to-Crescent-City loop with stops at Avenue of the Giants, the Lost Coast, and Trinidad makes for an unforgettable redwood itinerary.
nps.gov/redw/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Redway RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but Redway is manageable because distances between highlights are short. Expect a Class C motorhome to get about 8 to 12 miles per gallon, a campervan 16 to 20 mpg, and a Class A roughly 7 to 9 mpg. California gas prices typically run in the high $4 to mid $5 range per gallon, with Garberville (the closest fuel stop to Redway, about 2 miles south) often a bit higher than Fortuna or Eureka to the north. For a 5-day, 400-mile loop, budget roughly $200 to $325 in fuel for a Class C. Check current prices on the EIA before you go and fill up in Fortuna before heading south for slightly better rates.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Redway?
For state park campgrounds along the Avenue of the Giants, book as early as possible: California State Parks opens reservations six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and prime summer weekends at Burlington, Hidden Springs, and Richardson Grove are often gone within hours of release. For private parks like Dean Creek Resort and Benbow KOA, 2 to 3 months out is usually safe for summer, while shoulder season often has openings just a week out. If you strike out on a state park reservation, check ReserveCalifornia daily, as cancellations pop up often, and look for first-come, first-served options at Albee Creek for last-minute travelers.
reservecalifornia.com/What are local driving conditions like around Redway?
Driving an RV around Redway is mostly relaxed, with a few stretches that reward extra attention. Highway 101 through town is wide, modern, and easy. The Avenue of the Giants (Route 254) is two lanes, low-speed, and very RV-friendly, just take your time around the curves. Be careful on Briceland Thorn Road heading to Shelter Cove and the Lost Coast: it's narrow, winding, and steep, and is not recommended for RVs longer than 25 feet. Coastal fog can roll in along the Eel River canyon in the early morning, and winter rains can cause minor slides on rural roads. Pro tip: check the Caltrans QuickMap before you head out, it shows real-time closures and chain controls.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at Redway-area campgrounds?
Campgrounds around Redway range from full-hookup resorts to rustic state park sites, so you can pick the comfort level that fits your trip. Dean Creek Resort and Benbow KOA both offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Humboldt Redwoods State Park sites (Burlington, Hidden Springs, Albee Creek) have no hookups but include picnic tables, fire rings, bear-proof food lockers, flush toilets, and hot showers. There is a public RV dump station and potable water fill at the Humboldt Redwoods Visitor Center near Weott. If you're staying at a state park site, plan to dump and refill at the visitor center on your way in or out to save a separate trip.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425What's included inside the RV itself?
Modern RVs make the Redwood Coast comfortable. Most Redway listings include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, a dining area, beds for the number of guests listed, heating, air conditioning, and seatbelts for traveling passengers. Class A and Class C motorhomes typically add a TV, awning, and onboard generator, and many campervans now come with solar power for off-grid stays. Cell service drops out in much of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, so look for a motorhome rental in Redway with a generator or solar setup if you want reliable power for charging devices while camping along the Eel River.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Redway,CaliforniaWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup and drop-off work?
Redway hosts make it easy to customize your trip with add-ons: bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15 to $30), generators, kayaks for the Eel River, and bikes for the Avenue of the Giants. Pickup usually happens at the host's home in or near Redway, Garberville, or Miranda, and includes a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough so you leave feeling confident. Drop-off is the reverse: return with the agreed fuel level and dump the tanks, or pay a flat dump fee (typically $50 to $100) if you'd rather skip it. Ask your host about fuel and dump add-ons in advance so there are no surprises at return.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Redway,CaliforniaHow do payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Redway?
Payment is simple and secure: when you book your RV rental in Redway, RVezy charges your card through the platform, so you never hand cash to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after drop-off once the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. To avoid deposit issues, take photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, stay within your mileage allowance, and return the rig with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Message your host the day before pickup to confirm deposit timing and keep everything smooth.
