Camping near Rexland Acres, California

Rexland Acres is an unincorporated community in Kern County, roughly six miles south of downtown Bakersfield in the southern San Joaquin Valley. RV travelers use it as a flat, easy-access base for the wider Bakersfield area, with full-hookup parks on the city's south and west sides and public-land campgrounds within a one to two hour drive in the Sierra foothills. Private options near the neighborhood include Bakersfield River Run RV Park on Burr Street, Bakersfield RV Resort and Bakersfield KOA on Wible Road, Bakersfield Travel Park on East Brundage Lane, and Shady Haven RV Park. These parks stay open year-round and cater to big rigs, families, and snowbirds passing through on Interstate 5 or Highway 99. Beyond the city, the Kern River Ranger District of Sequoia National Forest covers 663,000 acres and offers 25 campgrounds and 10 developed day-use areas along the Upper Kern River and Lake Isabella, which expands the range of trips that can launch from a Rexland Acres base.

Things to do near Rexland Acres

Day trips from a Rexland Acres campsite center on water, mountains, and Bakersfield's cultural sights. The Kern River corridor north of town is the main draw, with hiking, fishing, kayaking, and rafting along the Upper Kern, and outfitters in Kernville running guided whitewater trips in spring and early summer. Lake Isabella adds reservoir boating, paddleboarding, and shoreline fishing. Closer in, the Kern River Parkway offers paved bike and walking trails through Bakersfield. Family stops include the Kern County Museum, the California Living Museum (CALM) zoo and botanical garden, and Murray Family Farms for seasonal U-pick. The Bakersfield Museum of Art and the Buck Owens Crystal Palace are also in town. Sequoia National Forest and the Trail of 100 Giants on the Western Divide Ranger District are within a half-day drive.

Bakersfield sits in the warmest, driest part of the San Joaquin Valley, and that climate drives the camping calendar. The area has an arid subtropical pattern with mild, occasionally rainy winters and very hot, sunny summers. Spring from March through May and fall from mid-September through November are the most comfortable windows for RVing in town, with warm days, cool nights, and low rain risk. Many travelers target mid-March to mid-May and mid-October to mid-November for the best balance of weather and crowds. Summer days regularly climb past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so shaded sites, full hookups, and reliable air conditioning matter. Mountain campgrounds in Sequoia National Forest are the summer escape, with most Kern River Ranger District sites operating roughly May through September and some closing earlier when water systems are winterized. Winter in the valley is mild but can bring days of dense tule fog and the bulk of the area's annual rain. Snow is essentially a non-issue at Rexland Acres elevation.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

How to book campgrounds near Rexland Acres

Private RV parks around Bakersfield, including Bakersfield KOA, Bakersfield RV Resort, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, Shady Haven RV Park, and Bakersfield Travel Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA properties also use the national KOA booking system. Holiday weekends and the snowbird stretch from late fall through early spring fill the larger pull-through parks first, so book several weeks ahead. For public campgrounds in the Kern River corridor and Sequoia National Forest, use Recreation.gov or the toll-free reservation line at 1-877-444-6777. Developed sites operate under a concessionaire program, and a share of sites is held first-come, first-served. Reservation windows typically open six months ahead, and summer weekends along the Kern book out quickly.

What to expect at Rexland Acres campgrounds

Expect flat, paved or gravel sites at low elevation, easy big-rig access from Highway 99 and Highway 58, and full hookups at most private parks in town. Bakersfield River Run RV Park has 123 full-hookup sites with long pull-throughs that handle the largest rigs, and Bakersfield RV Resort offers pull-through full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service. Bakersfield Travel Park is smaller and better suited to mid-size trailers, so confirm length against your rig before booking. Amenities at the larger parks typically include pools, laundry, dump stations, and Wi-Fi. Summer heat is intense, so confirm 50-amp service if running two air conditioners. Public sites up the canyon are different, with vault toilets, drinking water at developed campgrounds, and no hookups or showers. Bear-aware food storage, campfire permits, and seasonal fire restrictions apply on national forest land.
