Campgrounds and RV parks near Rio Dell, CA

The Avenue of the Giants is the main draw, a 32-mile parallel route to Highway 101 lined with old-growth redwoods and numerous pullouts. The Founders Grove Nature Loop is a level half-mile walk past the Founders Tree and the fallen Dyerville Giant. Rockefeller Loop, accessed off Mattole Road, threads through what is widely regarded as the largest remaining old-growth coastal redwood forest. The South Fork of the Eel River offers summer swimming holes and fishing access, with calmer water typical by mid-summer. The Humboldt Redwoods Visitor Center, near Burlington Campground south of Weott, has maps, exhibits, and trail information. Kid-friendly roadside stops include the Immortal Tree and the Eternal Tree House near the northern end of the Avenue.

Summer is the peak window. June through early September brings dry weather, warm afternoons, and the most reliable river access. Hidden Springs Campground inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park typically operates Memorial Day through Labor Day, and Albee Creek generally runs May through October, so summer reservations should be booked well ahead. Burlington Campground is the only state park campground inside Humboldt Redwoods that operates year-round. Spring is green and quieter, with wildflowers and full creeks, but cool nights and lingering rain are common into May. Fall holds warm days through October with thinning crowds, though seasonal bridges over the Eel River are usually removed by late autumn, changing trail access. Winter is the wettest stretch on the North Coast, with heavy rain, possible flooding along the Eel River, and occasional road closures on the Avenue of the Giants. Many private RV parks stay open year-round, but expect short days, cold nights, and damp sites under the redwood canopy.

The Rio Dell area is small-town northern California, with limited services concentrated along Wildwood Avenue and at exits off Highway 101. Cell service is spotty under the redwood canopy and inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park, including at Burlington Campground. State park sites do not offer hookups, and there is no RV dump station inside Humboldt Redwoods State Park; plan dump and water stops at private parks or in nearby towns. State park campgrounds do not accept RVs or trailers over 24 feet in length, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions when booking or choose a private park. Roads under the redwoods are narrow with low branches; drive slowly and watch clearances. Bring layers for cool, damp mornings even in summer, and store food in provided lockers where bears and raccoons are active.
