Camping near Penngrove, California
Penngrove sits in southern Sonoma County between Petaluma and Rohnert Park, just off Highway 101 and roughly an hour north of San Francisco. The town works well as an RV base for wine country trips, with an easy drive to Napa and Sonoma county wineries, a longer drive to coastal spots like Bodega Bay, and quick access to the Russian River and Lake Sonoma.
The closest full-service option is the San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA, reached from US 101 at the northernmost Petaluma exit, then west across the freeway and onto Stony Point Road and Rainsville Road. Wine Country RV Park Sonoma and Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park place travellers closer to tasting rooms and downtown Santa Rosa, while Sugarloaf Ridge State Park offers a public, no-hookup option in the hills above Kenwood. Novato RV Park sits south on Highway 101 for travellers continuing toward Marin and the Golden Gate.
Things to do near Penngrove
Wine tasting dominates the area, with hundreds of Sonoma and Napa Valley wineries within a short drive. Day-trip options from a Penngrove base include Point Reyes National Seashore, about 30 miles away, with hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and ocean views, and Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, roughly 25 miles out, with towering redwoods and forest trails. Coastal trips reach Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast, about 35 miles from Penngrove, for fresh seafood and whale watching. Hikers staying at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park have access to 25 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding, plus the volunteer-run Robert Ferguson Observatory, a short walk from the campground, with regularly scheduled solar and star parties. Petaluma's historic downtown adds restaurants, outlet shopping, and a riverfront walk.

The area has a Mediterranean climate with a long dry summer and a wet winter concentrated between November and March. Spring and fall typically bring the most comfortable conditions for RV travel, with wildflowers across the hills in spring and cooler hiking weather in fall. Summer is warm and dry, with very little rain through July and August, and it is the busiest booking window for the KOA, the fairgrounds, and wine-country RV parks.
Winter changes the mix. Days stay mild but trails turn muddy and creeks run hard. At Sugarloaf Ridge, a 25-foot waterfall flows after the winter rains, and camping spots fill up quickly on weekends, April through October and on holidays. Wildfire season in California typically peaks from late summer into October, so check CAL FIRE and park alerts before travelling, since smoke and closures can affect inland parks. Layered clothing is sensible year-round because coastal fog can cool evenings even after hot afternoons.

Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. How to book campgrounds near Penngrove
Private parks each use their own system. The San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA books through KOA.com or its reservations line, and demand is high after it was named the 2026 KOA Campground of the Year, so popular weekends fill months out. The Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park books directly, and reservations cannot be made more than 60 days prior to the departure date; a cancellation must be made by 6 pm the day prior to arrival, or a cancellation fee applies. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park uses ReserveCalifornia, with reservations booked up to 6 months in advance; if no reservable spots are available, first-come-first-served sites may be booked by calling the park at 10 a.m. on the day of arrival.
What to expect on the ground
RV options around Penngrove split into two camps. Private parks like the San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA, Wine Country RV Park Sonoma, Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park, and Novato RV Park lean toward full hookup sites with 30A or 50A power, water, and sewer on level gravel or paved pads, close to highways and amenities but with limited shade and tight spacing in places. State park camping at Sugarloaf Ridge is more rustic: there is no dump station at the campground or hook-ups, but water spigots are available to fill tanks, and the park can accommodate RVs up to 31 feet and trailers up to 28 feet. Cell reception drops off in the hills, so download maps before leaving the highway corridor.

parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/visit/campgroundsWhen is the best time to visit Penngrove in an RV?
Penngrove has a Mediterranean climate, which means RV travel here is genuinely great almost year-round. Spring (March through May) brings green rolling hills, wildflowers, and daytime highs in the 60s and 70s with cool 40s at night, perfect for hiking and wine tasting without crowds. Summer (June through September) is warm and dry, with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s and almost no rain, the prime stretch for Russian River floats and Bodega Bay beach days. Fall (September through October) is harvest season and arguably the most magical time for a Penngrove RV trip. Winters are mild (50s by day) but rainy. Aim for late spring or early fall to dodge both crowds and harvest-week pricing.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Penngrove?
You'll do great, and you're not alone. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario on RVezy, and every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, the awning, and tank dumping. Penngrove is an ideal launch point too: it sits just off Highway 101 in flat, open Sonoma County farmland, so you can ease into RV driving before tackling anything trickier. Stick to Highway 101, Highway 12, or Stony Point Road for your first few miles, take wide turns, and remember most rentals are around 10 to 12 feet tall. Message your host with any questions, and RVezy support is available 24/7 throughout your trip.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue on my Penngrove RV trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 101, a dead battery at Doran Regional Park, or a mechanical hiccup heading up Highway 1 to Bodega Bay, one phone call gets help dispatched. You can also reach your host directly through the RVezy app for quick questions, like how to relight the water heater, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup, snap a photo of the RV's VIN, and head out with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental on a road trip from Penngrove to Oregon or across state lines?
Yes, an RV road trip from Penngrove across state lines is one of the most popular ways to use your rental. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental U.S., including up the coast to Oregon (the California-Oregon border is about 330 miles north via Highway 101), east to Nevada and Lake Tahoe (215 miles), or south through Big Sur. Travel into Mexico is not permitted, since insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host, so message them before booking to confirm. Popular routes from Penngrove include Highway 1 to Mendocino, the Pacific Coast Highway south to Monterey, and the Sierra loop through Yosemite.
dot.ca.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a Penngrove RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items, but it's easy to budget. California gas prices typically run higher than the national average, so plan on roughly $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon at Penngrove-area stations along Highway 101 (check the California Energy Commission's weekly fuel report for current numbers). Campervans and Class B rentals average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs hover around 6 to 9 MPG. For a typical 3-day Sonoma County loop covering 200 miles, expect to spend $80 to $130 on fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Petaluma or Rohnert Park, where prices tend to beat coastal stations in Bodega Bay.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Penngrove?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Sonoma County Regional Parks (Doran, Spring Lake, Gualala Point, Stillwater Cove) open reservations up to 12 months in advance through their official booking site, and summer weekends at Doran routinely sell out months ahead. California State Parks like Sonoma Coast State Park release sites 6 months out via ReserveCalifornia. Private parks like the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA and Casini Ranch typically take bookings a year ahead too. For a July or harvest-season Penngrove RV trip, aim for 4 to 6 months ahead minimum. Midweek and shoulder-season (April, May, October) trips are far easier to book last-minute.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Penngrove and Sonoma County?
Driving in and around Penngrove is friendly for RVers. Highway 101 runs right past town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and local roads like Old Redwood Highway, Stony Point Road, and Petaluma Hill Road are flat and easy. Where to take a little extra care: Highway 1 along the Sonoma coast (curvy with ocean cliffs, perfect for slow scenic driving, not for a rush), Highway 116 to Guerneville (narrow and twisty in spots), and afternoon Highway 101 traffic heading toward the Golden Gate Bridge on summer Sundays. Watch for fog in the mornings near Bodega Bay and check the Caltrans QuickMap for real-time conditions, especially in winter rains or wildfire season.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/Where can I dump tanks and fill fresh water near Penngrove?
You've got several convenient options close to home base. The San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA in Penngrove offers dump and water fill services, and Sonoma County Regional Parks campgrounds (including Doran, Spring Lake, and Gualala Point) all have dump stations available to overnight guests for a $10 fee. Most full-hookup sites in the area provide water, 30 or 50 amp electric, and sewer right at your spot. For free or low-cost dumps when in transit, the Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park in Santa Rosa is a reliable stop. Always rinse your hose, wear gloves, and use a separate hose for fresh water. Apps like Sanidumps and Campendium make finding spots on the road simple.
parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/play/camping/tent-trailer-and-rv-campsitesWhat amenities and features are included in a typical Penngrove RV rental?
Penngrove RV rentals come fully equipped for comfortable travel. Expect a real bed (queen or king is standard in most Class C and travel trailer rentals), a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining seating with seatbelts for travel, air conditioning, a furnace, and a propane or onboard generator for off-grid power. Many hosts also offer flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor awnings, and a few even include Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink (great for working remotely in wine country). Each listing on RVezy shows exactly what's included, and hosts often throw in extras like camp chairs, kitchen kits, and bedding. Read the listing carefully and message your host about any must-haves.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/What add-ons and options can I get with my motorhome rental Penngrove?
Hosts offer plenty of ways to customize your motorhome rental in Penngrove. Popular add-ons include linens and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generators (some are included, others run $3 to $10 per hour of use), bike racks, portable BBQs, outdoor patio mats, Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is the most-loved add-on (typically $2 to $4 per mile), especially for first-timers heading to Doran or the Petaluma KOA. Mileage policies vary by host (most include 100 to 150 miles per day, with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.50 each), and pickup is usually between 1 and 4 PM with a noon return. Every add-on is listed transparently on the booking page.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-industry-services/registration-information/special-interest-and-non-resident-vehicles/recreational-vehicles/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Penngrove, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit is placed as a pre-authorization hold on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and it is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean, on time, and undamaged. To avoid issues, do a video walk-around with your host at pickup and drop-off, return with the same fuel and propane levels, empty the tanks if required, and follow the mileage and pet policies on your listing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Penngrove a good base for a family RV trip in wine country?
Penngrove is a hidden gem for a family RV trip. Tucked between Petaluma and Rohnert Park just off Highway 101, it gives you easy access to family-friendly Sonoma County attractions without big-city traffic. Within 30 minutes you can hit Safari West (a 400-acre African wildlife preserve in Santa Rosa), Spring Lake Regional Park for swimming and paddling, Howarth Park's vintage train and carousel, and Tolay Lake Regional Park for hiking. The Petaluma Historic Iron Front Buildings downtown are a fun afternoon stroll with ice cream stops. Local insider tip: stop at the Penngrove Market on Old Redwood Highway for legendary tri-tip sandwiches to grill back at camp. It's the perfect launchpad for wine country with kids.
