Campgrounds and RV parks near Scotia, CA

The Avenue of the Giants is the headline drive: a 32-mile scenic alternate to Highway 101 lined with old-growth redwood groves, pullouts, and short interpretive loops. Humboldt Redwoods has an extensive trail network used for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian riding, with popular options including the Founders Grove Nature Trail and the Bull Creek Flats Trail. The Rockefeller Loop near Bull Creek is flat, stroller-friendly, and stays cool on warm days. The South Fork of the Eel River offers fishing, swimming, and paddling during summer when water levels are low. Wildlife watchers may see black-tailed deer, river otters, and a range of birds. The Humboldt Redwoods Visitor Center near Burlington stocks maps and trail guides and runs seasonal interpretive programs.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is open year-round, but campground availability shifts sharply by season. Burlington Campground, near the park's visitor center on the Avenue of the Giants 1.5 miles south of Weott, is open year-round and is the reliable winter option inside the park. Hidden Springs Campground, with 154 sites on a forested hillside south of the visitor center, is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Albee Creek, off Mattole Road, typically operates from May through October. Cuneo Creek Horse Camp is open May through September, with site-specific reservations available from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer brings the lightest rainfall, warmest river temperatures, and the highest demand: weekends at the developed campgrounds fill quickly. A seasonal summer bridge across the river extends hiking access from Burlington and is removed before the wet season. Winter is the wet season. Heavy rain swells the Eel River, low-lying day-use areas can flood, and some park roads close temporarily. Spring brings fewer crowds, flowing creeks, and emerging wildflowers, with cooler nights and lingering showers through May.

Expect cool, damp air under the canopy even on warm afternoons. Coastal fog often pushes up the Eel River valley on summer mornings, then burns off by midday. Cell service is spotty along the Avenue of the Giants and inside many groves; download maps before arriving. Inside Humboldt Redwoods, a maximum of eight people are allowed per family campsite, picnic tables and fire rings are provided, and drinking water, flush toilets, and hot pay showers are available, but there are no sanitation stations and no sites offer RV hookups. Dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet, confined to a vehicle, tent, or pen at night, and never left unattended. Bring layers, a headlamp, and food storage suitable for a bear-country area.
