Campgrounds near Shafter, California
Shafter sits in Kern County in the southern San Joaquin Valley, roughly twelve miles northwest of Bakersfield off Highway 99. RV travelers generally use the city as a flat, low-elevation base for valley agriculture stops, oilfield-country detours, and longer hauls toward Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and the southern Sierra. Full-hookup commercial parks dominate the immediate area: Bakersfield KOA is the closest brand-name option, with Bakersfield RV Resort and Rosedale Village RV Campland providing similar pull-through layouts within a short drive. Bakersfield River Run RV Park lies near the Kern River corridor on the north edge of town, and Shady Haven RV Park rounds out the local cluster. All five are private, year-round properties built around big-rig access, paved or graded pads, electric, water, and sewer hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Public-land camping is limited on the immediate valley floor. Federal campgrounds requiring booking through Recreation.gov sit in the Sierra Nevada one to two hours east.
Things to do near Shafter
Most RV itineraries treat Shafter as a launch point rather than a destination. The Kern River corridor on the north side of Bakersfield offers walking and cycling on the Kern River Parkway, plus fishing access close to Bakersfield River Run RV Park. Day trips east on Highway 178 reach Lake Isabella and the Kern River Valley for boating, paddling, and trout water. Sequoia National Park's Foothills entrance near Three Rivers is roughly a two-hour drive north, opening access to giant sequoia groves at higher elevations. Closer in, families use the Kern County Museum, Murray Family Farms seasonal events, and the California Living Museum (CALM) zoo and botanic garden. Wildflower viewing in the Temblor Range and along Highway 58 toward Carrizo Plain National Monument draws spring traffic when bloom conditions cooperate.

79° / 52°F 9 mmWarm to mild; best shoulder-season window for RV travel
- winter
December - February
61° / 43°F 30 mmWettest season; dense tule fog hazard on valley highways
Shafter's climate is hot, dry valley: very hot, essentially rainless summers and mild, occasionally foggy winters. July and August daytime highs sit in the mid- to upper-90s Fahrenheit, with stretches over 100 common. RV travelers should plan for shade, generator-friendly sites, and strong A/C demand. Local commercial parks operate year-round, so heat is rarely a closure factor, only a comfort one.
Fall through spring is the practical sweet spot. October through May brings daytime temperatures in the 60s to mid-80s and cool nights. Tule fog can settle across the San Joaquin Valley from late November into February, reducing visibility on Highway 99 and Interstate 5 to near zero in the worst events; check Caltrans QuickMap before early-morning drives. Winter is the wet season, but totals are small, with January and February typically the wettest months. Sierra campgrounds east of town follow a different calendar: most higher-elevation sites in Sequoia and the Sequoia National Forest open in late spring and close by mid-fall, with Potwisha at lower elevation staying open year-round.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

How to book campgrounds near Shafter
The five private parks near Shafter, Bakersfield KOA, Bakersfield RV Resort, Rosedale Village RV Campland, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, and Shady Haven RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, with KOA also bookable through the KOA app and rewards program. Big-rig sites and pull-throughs go first on weekends and during fair, concert, and motorsports events at Mechanics Bank Arena and Kern County Raceway, so book one to four weeks ahead in peak shoulder season. Federal campgrounds in nearby Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, including Potwisha, Lodgepole, and Azalea, are reserved through Recreation.gov; reservations are required year-round at Potwisha, and the parks use a rolling one-month booking window that opens on the 15th of each month at 7 a.m. Pacific. National Forest sites in the Sequoia National Forest also book on Recreation.gov, with some first-come, first-served loops outside peak season.
What to expect at Shafter RV parks
Parks near Shafter are working RV parks oriented to travelers and long-term guests rather than scenic destinations. Expect level paved or gravel pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, dump stations, laundry, restrooms with showers, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Tree cover ranges from sparse to mature shade depending on the park; daytime temperatures make shaded sites valuable from May through September. Highway and rail noise is realistic given proximity to Highway 99 and the BNSF mainline. Tap water is potable but hard. Cell coverage is strong across all major carriers. Big rigs and slide-outs are accommodated at all five listed properties, with pull-throughs common. Pet policies are generally permissive with leash and breed rules. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV-parts retailers are within a short drive in Bakersfield.
