Campgrounds near Shingletown, California
Shingletown sits along California State Route 44 in Shasta County at roughly 3,500 feet elevation, in the hills just below Mount Lassen. The community functions as a base camp for RV travelers heading into Lassen Volcanic National Park, with the park's northwest entrance and Manzanita Lake area roughly 14 miles east of the Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA. Redding, the nearest full-service city, is about 30 miles west along Highway 44.
Full-hookup options in the area include Living Springs RV and Lodging, Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA, and Volcano Country Camping and RV. Mill Creek Resort sits to the south near the park's southern approach. For travelers who want a quieter, more rustic stay closer to the water, PG and E Lake Macumber Area Macumber Reservoir Campground offers basic sites on a small reservoir north of town.
In-park camping at Lassen is dry camping at higher elevations, so many RV travelers base out of Shingletown for hookups and drive into the park for the day.
Things to do near Shingletown
The main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park, with hydrothermal areas including Bumpass Hell, the Cinder Cone trail, and the drive over the park highway past Lassen Peak. Manzanita Lake is the closest park destination to Shingletown and offers flatwater paddling, catch-and-release fly fishing, and an easy loop trail with views of Lassen Peak. Families can pair a park day with the Loomis Museum near the northwest entrance.
Outside the park, Macumber Reservoir offers small-boat fishing for trout and bass. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, about an hour northeast, centers on a 129-foot waterfall fed by underground springs that flow year-round. Redding's Sundial Bridge and Turtle Bay Exploration Park give RV travelers a half-day option when the high country is socked in by weather or smoke.

December - February
52° / 37°F 140 mmWettest season; snow possible; park interior closed
Shingletown sits well below the snow line that closes the interior of Lassen, but the park itself runs on a short season driven by snowpack. Winter conditions in the higher elevations typically last from November into May or June, and reliable summer conditions only set in from late June through October. Spring and fall are short transitional seasons in the park.
For RV travelers, late June through mid-September is the dependable window: the park highway is fully open, all park campgrounds are operating, and Manzanita Lake's flush toilets and showers are turned on. July and August are the busiest months in the park, so weekend sites in town and inside the park fill out early. Shoulder months of June and September give better odds for last-minute spots. Shingletown lies entirely within a CAL FIRE Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, so late-summer fire restrictions and occasional smoke from regional wildfires are realistic planning factors.

How to book a campground near Shingletown
Private campgrounds around Shingletown, including Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA, Living Springs RV and Lodging, Volcano Country Camping and RV, and Mill Creek Resort, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Most private parks in the area follow a warm-season schedule, so reserve summer weekends several months out.
For camping inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, reservations run through Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling booking window. Manzanita Lake, the largest park campground, fills quickly for July and August weekends. A few areas, including Juniper Lake, Warner Valley, and the Southwest Walk-In sites, remain first-come, first-served. PG and E Lake Macumber Area Macumber Reservoir Campground is operated by the utility on a first-come basis.
What to expect at Shingletown campgrounds
Private parks in the Shingletown area are wooded with cedar, oak, and ponderosa and Jeffrey pine, generally level, and most offer full hookups, a dump station, and showers. The Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA sits at about 3,900 feet among shady conifers and adds a swimming pool, playground, and camp store, which makes it a common pick for families. Cell coverage is workable in town on major carriers but drops off quickly once inside the park.
Inside Lassen, all sites are dry camping with no hookups, bear-resistant food lockers are provided, and food must be stored in them at all times. Manzanita Lake Campground sits at 5,900 feet, so nights run cold even in July. RV drivers should approach from Highway 44 out of Redding rather than Highway 36 and County Road A6, which the KOA notes is not suitable for large rigs.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Shingletown, CA
How much does an RV rental in Shingletown, CA typically cost?
RV rental in Shingletown, CA is one of the more affordable ways to explore the gateway to Lassen Volcanic National Park, with nightly rates typically ranging from $95 to $175 for travel trailers and $175 to $325 for Class C motorhomes. Because Shingletown sits in a quieter corner of Shasta County, you often find better value than in coastal California hubs. For a cheap RV rental in Shingletown, book midweek, target shoulder months like late April, May, September, or early October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: sort by lowest price on the search page to spot owner deals, then message the host to ask about unlisted weekly bundles or included generator hours.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shingletown%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Shingletown?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Shingletown, CA. No special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license is required for any motorhome on the RVezy platform. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking process, so there is nothing to mail or fax. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home-country license and you are set. Most first-time renters heading to Lassen are surprised at how quickly verification wraps up, often the same day you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV protected if something happens during my trip?
Yes. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive into Lassen Volcanic National Park with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your rental, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (you select it, not the host). Coverage details and limits vary by plan, so review the options before confirming. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at pickup and again at drop-off. It takes two minutes and makes any post-trip conversation effortless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Shingletown RV rental?
Booking is lower risk than you might think. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and there is a grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refunds beyond that window depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, guests are refunded or offered travel credits. Because Shingletown sits in Shasta County's wildland-urban interface, RVezy support can also help you navigate weather or evacuation related changes if they ever come up. Pro tip: book early to secure the RV you want, then contact RVezy support directly if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Shingletown RV rental?
Absolutely. A pet-friendly RV rental in Shingletown is easy to find using the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy, and many Shasta County hosts genuinely welcome four-legged guests. Once you are here, dogs are allowed on leash throughout Lassen National Forest and at most developed campgrounds, though they are not permitted on most trails inside Lassen Volcanic National Park itself. Great dog-friendly alternatives include sections of the Pacific Crest Trail near Hat Creek, the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, and shoreline trails at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and share your dog's size, most are happy to share local hike recommendations too.
fs.usda.gov/lassenCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Shingletown?
Yes. RV delivery in Shingletown is one of the most popular options on the platform and a great choice if you are new to RVing or want to skip the drive. Many hosts will deliver and set up your rental at Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA, Manzanita Lake Campground inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, or a private cabin driveway, then walk you through every system before leaving. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see who offers it and how far they will travel. Pro tip: delivery typically runs $2 to $4 per mile from the host's home base, and Shingletown sits right on Highway 44, so delivery from Redding (about 30 miles west) is usually quick and affordable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shingletown%2C%20CaliforniaHow do mileage policies work and how far can I realistically drive?
Most Shingletown RV rentals include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a bigger Shasta Cascade loop. From Shingletown you can reach the Manzanita Lake entrance of Lassen Volcanic National Park in about 20 miles, Burney Falls in roughly 60 miles, Shasta Lake in about 45 miles, Lassen's southwest entrance via Mineral in about 45 miles, and Mount Shasta city in around 95 miles. Pro tip: estimate your total trip miles before booking and filter listings accordingly, hosts will sometimes pre-bundle extra miles at a lower per-mile rate if you ask up front.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Shingletown for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice. Top picks include Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA Holiday right in town (full hookups, pool, big-rig friendly, open seasonally), Manzanita Lake Campground inside Lassen Volcanic National Park (no hookups but stunning lakeside sites with a dump station nearby), and Hat Creek Hereford Ranch RV Park to the east for travelers heading toward Burney Falls. Lassen National Forest also offers quieter options like North Battle Creek Reservoir and Hat Creek Campground. Pro tip: if you are driving anything larger than a Class B, take Highway 44 east from I-5 rather than narrower back routes from Red Bluff, it is the way locals and KOA staff recommend.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232489When is the best time of year for a Shingletown RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Shingletown RV trip, when daytime highs typically sit between 75F and 95F and the road through Lassen Volcanic National Park (Highway 89) is fully open after winter snow clearing, usually by mid to late June. July and August are sunny and dry but the busiest. May, September, and early October offer cooler nights in the 40s and 50s, thinner crowds, and gorgeous light. Winters bring snow and overnight lows in the 20s and 30s, great for snowshoeing but tougher on RVs. Pro tip: aim for the second week of June, the park road has usually just opened, wildflowers are starting, and campsites are still easy to grab.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/operating-hours.htmI've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
Yes, and Shingletown is one of the easier places in California to learn. First time renting an RV? Your host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, waste, slide-outs, and driving tips, and you can text them anytime during the trip. Highway 44 east of Redding is a wide, two-lane mountain highway with gradual grades and turnouts, far gentler than coastal cliffs or Tahoe passes. If you want to skip driving altogether, choose a host who delivers. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer in the 20 to 25 foot range or a Class C motorhome, they handle like a large truck and fit campgrounds from Manzanita Lake to the KOA without drama.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down near Lassen?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Highway 44, a dead battery at Manzanita Lake, or a mechanical hiccup in Lassen National Forest, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also your first text-message lifeline for the quirks of their specific rig, like how the generator likes to be started or where the spare fuses live. Cell coverage can be spotty inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, so save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Shingletown. Pro tip: do a quick tire-pressure and fluid check at pickup with your host, most roadside calls trace back to tires or batteries.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV on an interstate road trip or across the Canadian border?
In most cases yes for an interstate RV road trip from Shingletown, and many hosts happily approve Oregon, Nevada, and the wider Pacific Northwest. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan you select, so message the owner directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend south of the border. Popular routes from Shingletown include Crater Lake, Oregon (about 240 miles north), Lake Tahoe (about 180 miles south), Yosemite (about 340 miles south), and the Oregon Coast (around 280 miles). Pro tip: share your full route with the host up front so they can pre-approve mileage and any paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Plan for realistic numbers and you will be pleasantly surprised. Class B campervans average 17 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes or larger fifth wheels closer to 6 to 9 MPG. Gas prices in Shasta County typically run a bit lower than coastal California, with stations in Shingletown, Palo Cedro, and Redding offering competitive prices along Highway 44. For a typical 4 day Shingletown loop covering 250 to 400 miles, expect $120 to $250 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in Redding before heading east, the next reliable stations toward Lassen are spaced 25 to 50 miles apart and prices climb the farther you go into the mountains.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Shingletown?
For Lassen Volcanic National Park sites, book as early as you can. Manzanita Lake and other in-park campgrounds open on Recreation.gov six months in advance and popular holiday weekends (July 4th, Labor Day) can sell out quickly. Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA and private parks usually take reservations 9 to 12 months out, with summer weekends filling by spring. Lassen National Forest campgrounds like North Battle Creek and Hat Creek can also be booked on Recreation.gov. Pro tip: if you strike out on weekends, midweek Tuesday through Thursday stays at Manzanita Lake often have last-minute openings, and the park is dramatically quieter then too.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232489What are the local driving conditions like around Shingletown?
Driving around Shingletown is refreshingly straightforward compared to most of California. Highway 44 is a well-maintained two-lane mountain road with steady 3 to 5 percent grades climbing east from Redding (elevation around 500 feet) up to Shingletown (about 3,500 feet) and on toward Lassen. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, slow-moving logging trucks, and summer afternoon thunderstorms that can briefly slick the road. Winter brings snow and chain-control areas from roughly November through April. Pro tip: stick to I-5 north to Highway 44 east for big-rig travel, that is the route the KOA itself recommends to RV guests.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Shingletown offer, and where can I dump or fill water?
You have a great mix of options. Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA offers full hookups (30 and 50 amp), potable water, dump station, showers, laundry, pool, and Wi-Fi. Inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, Manzanita Lake Campground has no hookups but provides potable water, flush toilets, a dump station, and a nearby camper store with hot showers and laundry. McCumber Reservoir and dispersed Forest Service sites are primitive, so plan to bring everything in and out. Pro tip: the Manzanita Lake dump station is the most convenient for anyone exploring the park's northwest corner, and it is free for registered campers.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/manzanita-lake-campground.htmWhat's actually inside the RV, beds, kitchen, Wi-Fi, generator?
Plenty more than you might expect. Most motorhome rentals in Shingletown include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, often a small oven), a bathroom with toilet and shower, a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa sleepers, climate control, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel. Many Class C and Class A units include a generator (handy for boondocking near Lassen where hookups are scarce) and a flat-screen TV. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss, the rig may have a hotspot but cell service inside Lassen Volcanic National Park is genuinely limited. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps and Generator to match your group size and off-grid needs, then confirm linens and kitchenware with the host before booking.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/cell-phone-coverage.htmWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts in Shingletown offer some genuinely useful add-ons: pre-stocked kitchen kits, bedding and towel packages, camping chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and pet packages. Common fees you will see are delivery (often $2 to $4 per mile), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour beyond any included allowance), and dump-station service if you would rather not handle it ($40 to $80). Pickup is usually at the host's home in Shingletown, Palo Cedro, or Redding, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a dump-station add-on for your first campervan rental in Shingletown, you will arrive at Manzanita Lake to a ready-to-camp RV and leave without a single chore.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shingletown%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment work and what should I expect for a security deposit?
Payment is simple and secure. RVezy charges your card through the platform when you book, no cash or e-transfers directly to the host, which keeps everything documented and protected. A refundable security deposit is held or pre-authorized before your trip, and it is separate from your booking payment. The deposit is released after the host confirms the rig comes back in the same condition. To avoid hiccups, do a thorough walkaround video with your host at both pickup and drop-off, return the RV with a clean interior, and refill propane and fuel to the agreed levels. Pro tip: keep gas receipts from your last fill near Redding, they make any reconciliation conversation quick and easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre winter RV rentals in Shingletown actually doable?
Yes, and it can be a stunning, snowy adventure if you pick the right rig. Winter temperatures in Shingletown drop into the 20s and 30s overnight, with snow common from December through March, so look for a rental with heated holding tanks, a propane furnace, and the option for shore power at a winterized park. Mt. Lassen/Shingletown KOA closes seasonally, but RV parks in Redding (about 30 minutes west, lower elevation) generally stay open year-round with full hookups. Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park closes to vehicles in winter but the Manzanita Lake entrance remains open to snowshoers and skiers. Pro tip: message hosts directly to confirm winter readiness, and pack tire chains, they are often required on Highway 44 during snow events.
