Camping near Solvang
Solvang sits in California's Santa Ynez Valley, roughly 35 miles northwest of Santa Barbara and about a 20-minute drive from the Gaviota coast. The town itself is small and walkable, so most RV travelers base at a nearby resort or coastal state park and day-trip in for Danish bakeries, wineries, and Mission Santa Inés.
The closest full-service option is Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground in Buellton, about four miles from downtown Solvang, with full-hookup sites, pools, a splash pad, cabins, and Airstream rentals. South over the San Marcos Pass and along Highway 101, three California state parks line the Gaviota Coast: Refugio State Beach, El Capitan State Beach, and Gaviota State Park. All three are oceanfront, dry-camping only, and reservable through ReserveCalifornia. Ocean Mesa RV Resort, on the bluff above El Capitan, offers full hookups and level pads for travelers who want beach access without giving up amenities. Together these five properties cover the full range from rustic state-park camping to resort-style RV stays.
Things to do around Solvang
Solvang's compact downtown delivers Danish architecture, bakeries, wine-tasting rooms, and Hans Christian Andersen Park, an easy stop for families with younger kids. The surrounding Santa Ynez Valley holds dozens of wineries and tasting rooms within a short drive, plus Lake Cachuma for fishing and boating and Los Padres National Forest for hiking. On the coast, the Gaviota state beaches offer swimming, tidepooling, surfing, and the 2.5-mile Aniso Trail connecting El Capitan and Refugio along the bluffs. Gaviota State Park adds a historic fishing pier, the Gaviota Wind Caves sandstone formations, and a climb to Gaviota Peak. Cyclists can ride the bluff paths, and Refugio's sheltered cove is popular for kayaking and snorkeling.

The Solvang area camps year-round, but the experience changes sharply by season. Summer, from June through August, is the busiest stretch: warm, dry, and largely fog-free inland, with coastal mornings often gray until midday. Coastal state-park sites fill the moment the six-month booking window opens for weekends and holidays, and Flying Flags books heavily around Solvang's summer events.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travelers. March through May brings green hillsides, wildflowers, and mild temperatures, while September through November offers the warmest ocean water, clearer skies, and lighter crowds. Winter, December through February, is the wet season, with January and February the rainiest months in the valley. Gaviota State Park's campground closes entirely from October 1 through March 31. El Capitan and Refugio remain open year-round, but Refugio shifts to walk-in-only between December 1 and March 31, and both coastal parks are subject to storm-related closures during the rainy season.

How to book
The three nearby state parks, Refugio, El Capitan, and Gaviota, all reserve through ReserveCalifornia, online or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. Sites can be booked up to six months ahead of the arrival date, and summer weekends typically sell out within minutes of the booking window opening. Refugio accepts reservations from April 1 through November 30; from December 1 through March 31, standard sites are walk-in only. Gaviota's campground is reservable only during its open season of April 1 through September 30. El Capitan reserves year-round.
Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground and Ocean Mesa RV Resort book directly through each property's own website and operate year-round. For these private resorts, holiday weekends and Solvang's event calendar drive the heaviest demand, so reserve well in advance.
What to expect
The state-park campgrounds along the Gaviota Coast are dry camping only, with no electric, water, or sewer hookups at sites. Refugio caps RVs and trailers at 30 feet, Gaviota at roughly 24 to 27 feet, and El Capitan also at 30 feet for motorhomes and trailers. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table, and showers run on quarters or tokens. Refugio has a dump station and potable water, Gaviota has a dump and fill station, and El Capitan's dump station has been reported out of service in recent seasons, so plan tank service accordingly.
Flying Flags and Ocean Mesa offer full hookups, 30/50-amp service, pools, laundry, and on-site stores. Expect highway and Amtrak train noise at the coastal parks, ground squirrels and raccoons that will raid unsecured food, and strong afternoon winds at Gaviota that can flatten tents.
