Campgrounds near Somis
Somis sits in Ventura County between the agricultural Oxnard Plain and the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, putting RV renters within a short drive of inland ranch campgrounds and Pacific Coast Highway beachfront sites. Inland options include Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday, a 76-acre campground at the foot of Ventura County's highest mountain, Topa Topa, located roughly 7 miles between Santa Paula and Ojai, and Evergreen RV Park in Oxnard, which offers full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and electric on paved streets.
For coastal camping, two campgrounds inside Point Mugu State Park anchor the area: Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park, located along the Pacific Coast Highway with 62 primitive sites along the ocean offering direct beach access, and Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park, set in a canyon filled with sycamore and oak trees about half a mile from Sycamore Cove Beach with 58 sites for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 31 feet. Farther southeast along PCH, Leo Carrillo State Park offers 130 family campsites under giant sycamore trees with 1.5 miles of coastline, tide pools, and coastal caves.
Things to do near Somis
The Santa Monica Mountains backcountry is the main draw. Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park offers easy access to more than 70 miles of hiking trails in the Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area, with mountain biking, whale watching, bird watching, and wildlife spotting nearby. From Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park, campers can watch sunsets from the sand and reach trailheads for inland hikes. Leo Carrillo State Park's 1.5-mile beach is peppered with coastal caves, reefs, and tide pools and is popular for swimming, surfing, windsurfing, and surf fishing, with backcountry trails leading to ocean viewpoints. Inland, Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday layers on family programming: a jumping pillow, swing set and playground, gem mining, a creek, and a pool, plus a Soar Over Ventura Adventure Course combining a zip line with a ropes and obstacle course. Ojai's downtown and the Ventura beachfront are both within an easy day-trip radius.

Summer and early fall are the busiest stretches along the coast. Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park and Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park fill up most weekends throughout the year, so booking early is recommended, and the same holds for Leo Carrillo State Park on summer weekends and holidays. Winter is the wet season for Ventura County, concentrated from December through February, and Point Mugu State Park is open year-round but may be subject to closure after heavy storms.
Fall brings the highest wildfire risk. Fall has traditionally been the peak of the wildfire season in California as nights become longer and Great Basin air masses begin to cool down, and Santa Ana winds, warm air that picks up speed traveling from the inland deserts toward the coast, can have wide-reaching impacts in the area during the fall and winter months. Fire season is now considered to be year-round in California, with the potential for wildfires extending well into the rainy season, so renters should monitor CAL FIRE and Ventura County Fire Department advisories before traveling. Spring is mild with wildflowers in the Boney Mountains and lighter crowds midweek.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️
Tina F. - Oct 2026
Had a great time and our trailer was perfect. Oscar was wonderful as well.

The RV was great! Had everything we needed. Arie is amazing! Picked us up and dropped us off. He was always available if we had any questions during our trip.

How to book campgrounds near Somis
State park sites use ReserveCalifornia. Reservations for Point Mugu State Park are highly recommended due to the popularity of the campgrounds, and can be made up to six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia. Bookings can also be made by phone at 1-800-444-7275. The same window applies at Leo Carrillo State Park, where 130 family campsites at Canyon Campground plus hike-and-bike sites can be reserved via ReserveCalifornia, with online reservations opening six months in advance. Specific sites are assigned at check-in, so requests are not guaranteed. Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday is booked directly through the KOA website or by calling the campground office. Evergreen RV Park accepts daily, weekly, and monthly stays through its own reservation channel; confirm RV age policies at booking, since some long-stay parks in the area restrict older RVs.
What to expect
Expect a wide range of amenity levels. Inland parks like Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday and Evergreen RV Park offer full hookups, paved sites, and family amenities. State park sites are more basic. Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park and Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park cap trailers and motorhomes at 31 feet, and the same length limit applies at Leo Carrillo State Park. Thornhill Broome has portable toilets, no showers, and no shade, while Big Sycamore Canyon sites include fire pits, picnic tables, drinking water, flush toilets, token-operated showers, and a dump station. Entrance gates at both Point Mugu campgrounds open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m., with no entry after 10 p.m. Mountain lions have been spotted in the Point Mugu State Park area, so keep children close on trails and at dusk.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Somis, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Somis, CA?
An RV rental in Somis typically ranges from about $95 per night for compact campervans up to $300 or more per night for large Class A motorhomes, with travel trailers landing around $125 to $175 per night. Because Somis sits in agricultural Ventura County between Camarillo and Moorpark, pricing is often better than nearby Los Angeles. To find a cheap RV rental in Somis, book midweek, target shoulder months like March or November, and use the price filter to sort listings. Many hosts also offer discounts for stays of 5 or more nights, so message hosts directly before booking to ask about extended-stay rates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somis,CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Somis?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Somis. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License or any special endorsement for non-commercial motorhomes and trailers under standard recreational sizes, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy handles ID confirmation digitally before pickup, so there is no paperwork shuffle at the meet-up. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your local auto club before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple the licensing side really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat is included for protection and roadside help on my Somis RV rental?
Every RV rental in Somis booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. If you get a flat on Highway 101 heading to Ventura or your battery dies near Lake Casitas, help is one phone call away. During checkout you choose your protection level, which covers most damage to the vehicle. Roadside services such as towing, tire changes, lockout help, and jump-starts are included. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup so it is ready if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Somis RV trip?
RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation, including a grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund outcomes depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. RVezy, not the host, sets and manages this policy, so you get consistent treatment no matter which Somis listing you choose. The cancellation policy is not displayed on individual listings because it is the same platform-wide. Book early to secure the best rigs for spring break or summer weekends, knowing you have a built-in grace window if plans shift right after booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Somis RV rental?
Yes, many RVezy hosts welcome pets. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to see pet-friendly RV rental Somis options, and message the host to confirm any pet fee or rules. Once on the road, Somis is surrounded by dog-friendly spots: Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura has off-leash hours, Point Mugu State Park allows leashed dogs in campgrounds and on paved roads, and leashed pups are welcome at Ormond Beach. Pack a collapsible water bowl and a shade tarp, since inland Somis often runs warmer than the coast and RVs heat up quickly in summer.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24435Can the RV be delivered to my campground or address near Somis?
Yes. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Somis and across Ventura County. The host drives the rig to your campsite, driveway, or event venue, levels it, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. This is a great option for first-time renters and for spots like McGrath State Beach or Lake Casitas where backing in a big rig can feel intimidating. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your exact address to confirm the delivery fee, which is often based on round-trip mileage. Ask about adding a generator top-up so you arrive to a fully ready RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somis,CaliforniaHow far can I drive from Somis on a typical RV rental?
Most Somis hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer unlimited mileage as an upgrade, which is great for longer loops. Approximate driving distances from Somis: Santa Barbara is about 45 miles up Highway 101, Sequoia National Park is around 220 miles north, Big Sur is about 270 miles via the Pacific Coast Highway, Joshua Tree National Park is roughly 200 miles southeast, and Yosemite is about 320 miles. Many of these are doable in a single travel day. If you are planning an RV road trip from Somis up the coast, ask your host to bump your mileage allowance before pickup, which is almost always cheaper than paying overage fees later.
dot.ca.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Somis to park my RV?
Some of the best campgrounds near Somis include McGrath State Beach in Oxnard (oceanfront sites about 12 miles away), Emma Wood State Beach near Ventura (sites near the sand, around 20 miles west), Lake Casitas Recreation Area near Ojai (full hookups and fishing, about 30 miles north), Point Mugu State Park's Sycamore Canyon Campground (about 25 miles south with sites that fit rigs up to 31 feet), and Ventura Ranch KOA in Santa Paula (resort-style, around 10 miles east). For RV camping Somis travelers love, book state parks through ReserveCalifornia. Oceanfront sites at Emma Wood and McGrath release exactly six months in advance at 8 a.m. Pacific, so set a reminder.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time of year for a Somis RV trip?
Somis is a year-round destination thanks to its Mediterranean climate, but spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the sweet spot. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 75 F range, evenings cool to the upper 40s and low 50s, and you avoid both summer crowds and the brief winter rainy stretch in January and February. Summer inland highs typically reach the mid 80s to low 90s with cooler ocean-influenced nights, and winter days hover in the low 60s with overnight lows in the upper 40s, easy with RV heat. October is locally beloved because the citrus harvest is in full swing and roadside stands in Somis sell some of California's best Valencia oranges and avocados.
weather.gov/lox/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay picking one up in Somis?
You'll do great. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedure, and they're a text away during your trip. Somis itself is an easy launch pad: roads like Los Angeles Avenue and Highway 118 are flat, wide, and far less stressful than central LA traffic. Stick to Highway 101 and the 23 for your first drives and you'll feel confident fast. Smaller Class C motorhomes and campervan rental Somis options drive much like a large van. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot loop at a place like the Camarillo Premium Outlets area before hitting the freeway to get a feel for turns and mirrors.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a tire issue on the Conejo Grade, a dead battery at a campsite near Ojai, or a propane problem at Lake Piru is handled with one phone call. Dispatch can send a tow, tire service, fuel delivery, jump-start, or lockout help to your location anywhere in California. Your host is also a great first call for quick fixes, since they know their rig best. Snap photos of the propane tank, generator, and tire pressures during your walkthrough so you can text them to support if something seems off later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Somis RV rental to Mexico or other states?
Cross-state travel within the United States and Canada is generally allowed, but Mexico is not permitted because RVezy insurance coverage does not extend across that border. You can drive into Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, and beyond from Somis. Popular cross-state routes include Somis to Las Vegas (about 275 miles via I-15), Somis to the Grand Canyon (around 500 miles via I-40), and the full Pacific Coast Highway run north toward Oregon. Confirm your host's specific state allowances and any mileage upgrade options through the listing before booking a long-haul trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat is the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from Somis?
California gas prices typically run higher than the national average, often around $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon in Ventura County. Most motorhomes get between 8 and 14 miles per gallon, while campervans and small trailers can stretch to 18 to 22 mpg. For a 300-mile weekend loop from Somis to Santa Barbara and back, budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Diesel pushers get better mileage but diesel costs more per gallon. Fuel up in Camarillo or Moorpark before heading inland, and use a fuel price app to spot the cheapest stations along Highway 101.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground around Somis?
Earlier is better, especially for the coastal favorites. California State Parks (McGrath, Emma Wood, Point Mugu, Leo Carrillo) open reservations exactly six months ahead at 8 a.m. Pacific through ReserveCalifornia, and oceanfront sites for summer weekends and holidays can sell out within minutes. For Lake Casitas Recreation Area, reservations open about six months out through the Ventura County system. Private parks like Ventura Ranch KOA can usually be booked one to three months ahead. Pro tip: if you miss the six-month window, check ReserveCalifornia again two weeks before your trip — cancellations release a surprising number of prime sites, and many hosts will adjust your RV pickup time if you snag a last-minute spot.
reservecalifornia.com/What are local driving conditions like around Somis?
Generally easy and scenic. Somis sits in a flat agricultural valley with wide farm roads, and Highway 101 plus State Route 118 give you smooth freeway access without big-city congestion. Two things to plan around: the Conejo Grade on Highway 101 between Camarillo and Thousand Oaks is a long 7% climb that can slow heavier rigs (drop a gear and use the right lane), and morning marine layer fog is common from May through July, sometimes lingering until 11 a.m. near the coast. Wildfire season runs roughly June through November, so check Caltrans QuickMap before any inland drive. Pro tip: avoid Highway 101 southbound between 3 and 7 p.m. on weekdays toward LA, and time coastal drives for afternoon when the fog has burned off.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Somis?
You'll have everything you need close by. Most established campgrounds within 30 miles of Somis offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), flush toilets, hot showers, and dump stations. Lake Casitas, Ventura Ranch KOA, and Rancho Oso all have full hookups plus laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. State park campgrounds like Emma Wood and McGrath usually offer water spigots and dump stations but limited or no hookups at individual sites, so plan to use your fresh water tank. For free dump and water fill-ups, Camp Comfort County Park in Ojai and several Pilot/Flying J stations along Highway 101 are reliable. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Somis or Camarillo before heading to a state park to maximize your boondocking flexibility.
ventura.org/general-services-agency/parks-department/What features and amenities can I expect inside a Somis RV rental?
Modern comfort is the norm. Most motorhome rental Somis listings come fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and furnace), a dinette, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid power. Wi-Fi hotspots and Starbucks-quality coffee makers are increasingly common add-ons. Class B campervans are more compact but still include a bed, mini kitchen, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and check listing photos for kid-friendly features like bunk beds, which are popular in Class C rentals around Ventura County.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your trip with ease. Common Somis host add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bedding and towel packages, extra generator hours, kitchen kits, bike racks, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's location in Somis, Camarillo, or Moorpark, with delivery available to campgrounds, Ventura County Fairgrounds events, and even nearby airports such as Burbank for fly-in trips. Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles charged per mile, and many hosts offer unlimited mileage as a flat upgrade. Bundling delivery, setup, and a bedding package means your trip starts already unpacked, which is a big help for families on a tight schedule.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somis,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payments are handled securely through RVezy, with no cash or side deals. You pay the full booking total (nightly rate, service fee, any add-ons, and protection) at the time of booking by credit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately, typically a few days before pickup, and released back to your card after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. Deposit amounts vary by rig but commonly range from $500 to $1,500 for motorhomes. Document the RV's condition at pickup with photos and video, return it with the same fuel and propane levels, and ask the host upfront about cleaning expectations so your deposit comes back fast and full.
