Campgrounds and RV parks near Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA

The region pairs beach access with dune recreation, hiking, and Santa Ynez wine-country day trips. At Oceano Dunes, visitors drive the dunes in off-highway vehicles, walk leashed dogs on the sand, swim in the Pacific, or surf the beach break. Pismo Beach itself has a pier, a monarch butterfly grove, and a state-beach golf course nearby. At Gaviota State Park, trails lead above the coastal bluffs, ambitious hikers can climb to Gaviota Peak with a stop at the Gaviota Hot Springs, the Gaviota Wind Caves are worth a detour, and the beach area below the railroad trestle serves anglers, scuba divers, and surfers heading into the Santa Barbara Channel. Inland, the towns of Solvang, Buellton, and Los Olivos offer wineries, breweries, and tasting rooms within a short drive.

The Central Coast has a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures year-round, but seasonal closures and crowd patterns vary sharply between coastal state parks and private resorts. Gaviota State Park has a strict annual closure: from October 1 through March 31, camping is unavailable per annual closure order, though the park remains open to day use. From April 1 through September 30, reservations can be made through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance from the arrival date. Summer weekends and holiday weekends typically book out well ahead. Private resorts including Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground, Pacific Dunes Ranch RV Resort, and Pismo Sands RV Resort operate year-round, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day and on three-day holiday weekends. Winter brings the wet season: most regional rain falls between December and March, while summer is essentially dry. Coastal fog (the marine layer) is common late spring through early summer, even when inland Santa Ynez Valley sites are sunny and warm.

Expect a working coastline rather than a polished resort strip. Vandenberg conducts active launches, so road and beach closures around the base perimeter can occur on launch days. Coastal sites are exposed: heavy winds at Gaviota can reach up to 50 miles per hour with the potential to snap tent poles, and Oceano Dunes is similarly breezy. Cell coverage is spotty at oceanfront state parks. At Oceano Dunes, the camping area sits on open sand and the soft, deep surface can bog down vehicles without four-wheel drive. Expect ATV and dirt-bike noise during the day at the SVRA. State-park sites generally lack hookups, while Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground, Pacific Dunes Ranch RV Resort, and Pismo Sands RV Resort provide full hookups, paved or concrete pads, and resort amenities.
