Campgrounds near Westlake Village
Westlake Village sits in the eastern Conejo Valley along the Ventura and Los Angeles county line, with the Santa Monica Mountains directly south and the Pacific coast a short drive over the ridge. Most campgrounds within easy reach of the city are run by California State Parks, which means reservations route through ReserveCalifornia and book up early for weekends and holidays.
The closest option is Malibu Creek State Park - Family Camp, set in oak and sycamore woodlands on the inland side of the Santa Monica Mountains. Over the crest on Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu Beach RV Park offers full-hookup sites on a coastal bluff for travelers who need sewer and electric. Farther west along PCH, Leo Carrillo State Park combines a sycamore-shaded canyon campground with beach, tide pools, and sea caves. Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park and Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park round out the choices, with Thornhill Broome offering primitive sites directly on the sand.
Things to do near Westlake Village
Hiking is the headline activity. Malibu Creek State Park has roughly 15 miles of streamside trails through oak and sycamore woodlands, leading to rock pools, meadows, and the former M*A*S*H television set. Point Mugu State Park connects to a network of trails through the Boney Mountains State Wilderness, including the climb up the Sycamore Canyon sand dune.
At the coast, Leo Carrillo State Park has 1.5 miles of beach with tide pools, coastal caves, and reefs, plus swimming, surfing, windsurfing, and surf fishing. Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park sits directly on the sand with views toward Mugu Rock and the Channel Islands. Inland, Westlake Village itself offers a lake loop walking path, restaurants, and grocery resupply before heading into the mountains.

Peak demand runs May through October, when coastal sites at Leo Carrillo and Point Mugu book out months in advance and most holiday weekends are fully reserved the moment the six-month window opens. Summer days inland are warm and dry, with August the hottest month. Coastal campgrounds run cooler thanks to onshore flow and morning marine layer fog.
Spring brings wildflowers across the Santa Monica Mountains and the most pleasant hiking weather, though March can still deliver heavy rain. Fall is reliably warm and dry, with September often the warmest month on the coast and the easiest time to find shoulder-season availability.
Winter is the wet season for Southern California. Rain arrives in pulses from December through February, occasionally heavy enough to flood low water crossings and trigger trail or road closures in the Santa Monica Mountains. Fire restrictions, posted by the park and CAL FIRE, can also limit wood fires during dry, windy stretches in late summer and fall.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️
Tina F. - Oct 2026
Had a great time and our trailer was perfect. Oscar was wonderful as well.

The RV was great! Had everything we needed. Arie is amazing! Picked us up and dropped us off. He was always available if we had any questions during our trip.

How to book a campsite near Westlake Village
Malibu Creek State Park - Family Camp, Leo Carrillo State Park, and both Point Mugu campgrounds are all reserved through ReserveCalifornia, online or by phone at (800) 444-PARK. The booking window opens six months ahead on a rolling daily basis, with new inventory released each morning at 8 a.m. Pacific time, and popular summer weekends often clear out within minutes of opening.
Select high-demand sites at Malibu Creek State Park are distributed through California State Parks' Reservation Drawing lottery, which allows applicants to apply up to eight months in advance and awards a point to unsuccessful entries to improve future chances. At Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park, all sites are reservable, but mid-week stays are the realistic path to a last-minute spot. Malibu Beach RV Park is privately operated and booked directly through the property, typically with a multi-night minimum on weekends.
What to expect when camping near Westlake Village
RV length is the first thing to check. Big Sycamore Canyon Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park, Thornhill Broome Family Camp - Point Mugu State Park, and Leo Carrillo's Canyon Campground each cap combined vehicle and trailer length at 31 feet, and Malibu Creek tops out at 30 feet. Only Leo Carrillo's Canyon Campground (with 46 electric-only sites) and Malibu Beach RV Park offer hookups; the Point Mugu campgrounds are dry, and Thornhill Broome has no dump station on site, though one is available at nearby Sycamore Canyon.
Gates at the state park campgrounds typically open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Cell service is patchy in the canyons, coyotes pass through camp, and mountain lion activity has been reported in the Santa Monica Mountains, so keep children close on trails.

Reserve early through ReserveCalifornia for state parks, especially for summer and holiday weekends.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Westlake Village?

Spring (March to May) brings wildflowers and highs in the low 70s, while fall (September to November) is warm, sunny, and dry. Summers are popular but inland highs can reach the upper 80s to low 90s, so air conditioning is recommended. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow do I budget for fuel on my RV trip from Westlake Village?
Fuel is easy to estimate for your Westlake Village RV trip. Most gas motorhomes get 7 to 10 miles per gallon, and diesel pushers average 8 to 12. Gas prices in the Los Angeles area typically run higher than the U.S. average, so plan around current California pump prices when budgeting. A round trip to Santa Barbara (about 100 miles) usually costs $45 to $75 in fuel. Use GasBuddy or AAA to find the lowest local prices when filling up.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds for a family RV trip near Westlake Village?
For a family RV trip near Westlake Village, book your campground 2 to 4 months ahead, and even earlier for summer weekends and holidays. California State Parks such as Leo Carrillo, Point Mugu, and Malibu Creek open reservations six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia and often fill the same day. Midweek arrivals are easier to book and tend to have ocean-view sites still available. Booking your RV on RVezy first, then your campsite, helps keep dates aligned.
reservecalifornia.com/What local driving tips should I know for RV rentals in Westlake Village?
Driving an RV around Westlake Village is easier than navigating central LA. US-101 is the main route in and out, with gentle grades and wide lanes. Avoid Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings on the 101 toward the coast, when beach traffic is heaviest. Some smaller canyon roads like Mulholland Highway and Decker Canyon have tight turns and low overhanging trees, so stick to US-101 and PCH for larger Class A or Class C motorhomes. Booking RV delivery is a great option if you would rather skip the drive.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What campground hookups and dump stations are available near Westlake Village?

State parks such as Malibu Creek and Leo Carrillo do not have hookups at individual sites but include central dump stations and potable water fill. Public dump stations are also available at nearby RV parks and select city facilities in Thousand Oaks and Camarillo for a small fee. Confirm hookup type when reserving your site.
