Campgrounds near Westwood, California
Westwood sits near the northeast side of Lake Almanor in Lassen County, at roughly 5,100 feet in the southern Cascades. It is a small former logging town flanked by Lassen National Forest, with Lassen Volcanic National Park about an hour west and Eagle Lake to the north. The setting is high-elevation pine forest and meadow, and Lassen Peak is visible from many shoreline points.
For RV travelers, the area combines private lakeside parks with national-forest campgrounds along the Almanor shoreline. Lassen West RV Village is a full-hookup option close to Westwood, while Lake Cove Resort and Marina, Big Cove Resort, and Lake Almanor RV and Mobile Park cluster along the lake and offer water access for boats, kayaks, and fishing. North Shore Campground sits on the lake's north end near Chester and is a common base for day trips into Lassen Volcanic National Park.
The town itself has limited services. Plan on stocking groceries and fuel in Chester or Susanville before settling in.
Things to do near Westwood
Lake Almanor is the centerpiece. The reservoir covers roughly 28,000 acres and supports boating, swimming, water skiing, sailing, and fishing for trout, bass, salmon, and catfish. The paved Lake Almanor Recreation Trail follows the west shore for several miles and is non-motorized, making it good for family bike rides and walks.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is the main day-trip draw, with fumaroles, alpine lakes, and Lassen Peak itself. Manzanita Lake and the Bumpass Hell boardwalk are popular stops. The Bizz Johnson Trail, a former rail grade, runs from near Westwood east toward Susanville and is open to hikers, cyclists, and equestrians. Eagle Lake, north of town, adds a second fishery and quieter shoreline. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing take over in winter when conditions allow.

March - May
57° / 34°F 80 mmMud and lingering snow; park road often closed

June - August
79° / 46°F 15 mmPeak season; book six months out on Recreation.gov

September - November
61° / 34°F 60 mmCool nights, thinner crowds, possible wildfire smoke
- winter
December - February
41° / 25°F 150 mmHeavy snow; most campgrounds closed
The reliable RV season runs late May through early October. At more than 5,000 feet, winters bring heavy snow and many private parks and all forest campgrounds close or shift to limited service. Snow typically lingers from November into April, and the main park road through Lassen Volcanic high country is usually closed by snow well into June.
Late spring is muddy and unpredictable, with lake levels rising and wildflowers starting in the meadows. Summer is the peak window: warm dry days, cool nights, and full access to lake recreation. July and August see the heaviest demand, especially on weekends. Afternoon thunderstorms can build over the peaks but are usually brief.
Early fall is often the best balance of weather and availability. Days stay warm into late September, nights cool quickly, and crowds thin after Labor Day. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in late summer and early fall, so check current conditions before traveling.
Booking a campground near Westwood
Private parks around Lake Almanor, including Lassen West RV Village, Lake Cove Resort and Marina, Big Cove Resort, and Lake Almanor RV and Mobile Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Lakefront sites and full-hookup pull-throughs at these properties book first, often months ahead for July and August weekends and holidays.
National forest campgrounds in Lassen National Forest and campgrounds inside Lassen Volcanic National Park are reserved through Recreation.gov. The standard reservation window opens on a rolling six-month basis, and popular sites such as Manzanita Lake fill within hours of release for summer dates. Some forest sites remain first-come, first-served. For holiday weekends, plan to book exactly six months out at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time.
What to expect on the ground
Westwood is rural and quiet. Cell service is patchy outside town and often drops entirely inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arriving. The nearest full grocery stores and fuel are in Chester to the west and Susanville to the east; the small market in Westwood handles basics only.
Most national park sites have no hookups, vault or flush toilets only, and bear lockers at each site. Private lakeside parks generally offer power, water, and sewer, plus laundry and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Elevation above 5,000 feet means cool nights even in midsummer, so pack layers. Bears, deer, and ospreys are common. Store food properly, keep a leash on pets, and respect fire restrictions, which tighten sharply from July through October.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Westwood, CA
How much does an RV rental in Westwood, CA typically cost?
RV rentals in Westwood, CA are an affordable way to explore the Lassen County high country compared to coastal California or Lake Tahoe. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs often land near $275 to $375 per night. Because Westwood sits near Lake Almanor and Lassen Volcanic National Park, peak pricing hits July and August, while late September and early October offer similar scenery at lower rates. Use the Instant Book filter and look for hosts offering weekly discounts, which can reduce the cost of a five-night Westwood RV trip. Booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead tends to be the sweet spot for a cheap RV rental in Westwood.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westwood%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Westwood, CA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Westwood, even for larger Class A motorhomes you may see along Highway 36. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License or a special RV endorsement for personal recreational vehicles under 40 feet and under 26,000 pounds. RVezy generally requires approved drivers to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout, so there is nothing to mail or fax. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters heading to Lake Almanor are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward the paperwork is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Westwood RV rental?
Every RV rental in Westwood booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive Highway 36 toward Lassen Volcanic National Park with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, which matters when navigating mountain roads and gravel forest service routes. During checkout you choose your protection level, picking the coverage that fits your comfort and budget. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap on a backcountry road near Eagle Lake does not derail your vacation. The options are laid out clearly on every listing during booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Westwood RV trip?
You are not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in dates with confidence. After that window, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans stay protected. Because Westwood weather can swing from sunny to snowy in shoulder seasons, this flexibility is a real plus. If you are unsure, RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip to walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Westwood RV rental?
Absolutely, and Westwood is a great dog-friendly RV destination in Northern California. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see pet-friendly RV rental Westwood options, and you will find many owners who welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Once you are on the road, your dog can join you on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, which follows a historic rail line between Westwood and Susanville, or relax along the shores of Lake Almanor. Lassen Volcanic National Park restricts dogs from most trails, but the surrounding Lassen National Forest welcomes leashed pets. Message hosts in advance about any pet fee so there are no surprises at pickup.
fs.usda.gov/lassenCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Westwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Westwood is one of the smartest ways to start a stress-free trip, especially if you are new to towing or driving a larger rig on mountain highways. Many RVezy hosts in the Westwood and Lake Almanor area offer delivery and full setup, towing the RV to your campsite at North Shore Campground, a Lake Almanor Recreation Area site, or a Lassen National Forest campground, leveling it, connecting hookups, and walking you through every system. You just show up with groceries and a swimsuit. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service and review their per-mile delivery rate on the listing. For first time renting an RV, this is the easy button.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westwood%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive on my Westwood RV rental and what are the mileage policies?
Westwood is well positioned for adventures: Lake Almanor is just minutes south, the Manzanita Lake entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park is roughly 50 to 60 miles west, Susanville is about 25 miles east, and Reno, Nevada is roughly 110 miles southeast. Each host sets their own daily mileage allowance, with many Westwood-area listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per day, and some advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer loop through Northern California. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each. If you are planning a longer route like Westwood to Crater Lake, filter for unlimited mileage upfront. It can save real money on a longer Westwood RV trip.
nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Westwood, CA?
You are spoiled for choice. North Shore Campground on Lake Almanor's northern shore offers lakefront sites with hookups and easy water access. Rocky Point Campground on Lake Almanor is a PG&E-managed favorite with sites tucked under tall pines. Inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, Manzanita Lake Campground is the most popular RV-friendly spot (no hookups, but unbeatable views of Lassen Peak). Lassen National Forest offers Forest Service sites such as Goumaz and Aspen Grove with potable water on the Lake Almanor Recreation Area. Reserve federal sites through Recreation.gov and call private parks directly. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August weekends.
recreation.gov/When is the best time to visit Westwood, CA in an RV?
Late June through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Westwood, with daytime highs typically in the 75 to 85 degree range and crisp cool nights perfect for campfires when fire restrictions allow. Because Westwood sits at over 5,000 feet in the southern Cascades, winters are long, snowy, and cold, with January lows often in the teens and significant snowpack on Highway 36 and Highway 89. May and early June can still bring surprise snow at higher elevations near Lassen Peak. A local favorite is September: summer crowds thin out, Lake Almanor is still swimmable on warm afternoons, and aspens start turning gold along the Bizz Johnson Trail. Shoulder-season pricing on rentals is the cherry on top.
weather.gov/sto/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Westwood?
You will be fine, and Westwood is a friendlier first-timer destination than most of California. Traffic is light, Highway 36 and County Road A21 through town are wide and well-maintained, and you will not deal with low overpasses, narrow city streets, or aggressive urban traffic. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips and the propane, water, electrical, and waste systems so nothing feels mysterious. You can also message your host before booking with any question, no matter how basic. For your first day, plan a short scenic drive like Westwood to the Hat Creek Rim viewpoint to build confidence before tackling longer routes. By day two, you will feel like a pro.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operationsWhat happens if something breaks down on my Westwood RV trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 44, a battery dies at a Lassen National Forest dispersed site, or you run out of propane near Eagle Lake, one phone call gets help dispatched. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the main highways near Westwood, though it can fade inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, so screenshot the roadside number before heading into the park. Your host is also a great first call for vehicle-specific questions like resetting an inverter. Between roadside support, host expertise, and RVezy customer service, you have a real safety net on every Westwood RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Westwood RV rental on a multi-state road trip or to Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Westwood is one of the most rewarding ways to see the West. Popular routes include Westwood to Crater Lake, Oregon (about 280 miles), Westwood to Lake Tahoe (about 130 miles), Westwood to Yosemite National Park (about 320 miles), and the Cascade loop up through Mount Shasta and Bend. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and additional documentation, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. For US interstate travel, you are free to roam, just confirm your mileage allowance matches your planned route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for in Westwood?
Realistic expectations make for a happy trip. Class C motorhomes around Westwood average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 14 MPG. Most rentals run on regular unleaded, though some larger diesel pushers need diesel. Lassen County gas prices usually run above the California average, so fill up in Susanville or Chester when possible rather than at tiny mountain stops. The stations along Highway 36 in Chester (about 15 miles from Westwood) are typically the most reliable for big-rig access. Budget roughly $80 to $140 in fuel per day of active driving.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Westwood?
For summer weekends in July and August, lock in your campground 4 to 6 months ahead, especially for prime spots like Manzanita Lake Campground inside Lassen Volcanic National Park or Rocky Point on Lake Almanor. Reservations for federal and Forest Service campgrounds typically open up to 6 months in advance through Recreation.gov, so set a calendar alert. Private parks near Westwood often take reservations directly by phone and tend to have more last-minute availability. For weekday trips or shoulder-season stays in May, September, and October, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. A handy tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday or Monday check-in) snag the best lakefront sites that weekend visitors miss.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Westwood?
Westwood driving is mostly easy: wide rural highways, light traffic, and gorgeous Cascade scenery. The main routes (Highway 36, County Road A21, and Highway 89) are well-paved and RV-friendly. Two things to watch: in winter, Caltrans chain controls are common on Highway 36 from roughly October through April, and the Lassen Park Highway through Lassen Volcanic National Park typically closes from the first major snow (often November) until late June or early July. Summer can also bring smoke from regional wildfires, so check CAL FIRE updates before long days on the road. A local tip: avoid the twisty stretch over Fredonyer Pass at dusk when deer are most active. Otherwise, the roads are remarkably stress-free.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/How do I prepare for cold weather or winter RV camping in Westwood?
Winter camping in Westwood is a genuine adventure: snow-covered pines, frozen Lake Almanor sunrises, and groomed snow play options nearby. Some RVezy hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces, which are essential at this 5,000-plus-foot elevation where overnight lows can drop into the teens from December through February. Filter listings and message hosts directly to confirm winter readiness, shore power needs, and whether the rig comes with tire chains (legally required during chain controls). Several private parks in the Lake Almanor area remain open year-round with full hookups, making for a reliable winter base camp. Pro tip: book a host who offers RV delivery in Westwood during winter so you can skip the snowy tow.
fs.usda.gov/lassenWhat amenities will I find at Westwood-area campgrounds?
Westwood-area campgrounds run the full spectrum. Full-hookup private parks around Lake Almanor offer 30/50-amp power, water, sewer, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi at most sites. PG&E-managed Lake Almanor campgrounds like Rocky Point typically have potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and a centralized dump station but no individual hookups. Lassen National Forest sites such as Goumaz are more primitive, with pit toilets and limited water. The closest reliable dump stations are at private RV parks around Lake Almanor and Chester. Fill your fresh water tank before heading into the national park, since Manzanita Lake Campground has limited fill points. Tip: bring a 25-foot fresh water hose for the spread-out sites in this area.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/lassen/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat's included inside a typical Westwood RV rental?
Most Westwood RV rentals come ready to camp out of the box. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, basic cookware), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the floorplan, a propane furnace and air conditioning, a generator on many Class A and Class C motorhomes, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel passengers. Many hosts also include TVs, a Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor camp chairs. Wi-Fi and cell boosters are less common, and cell signal in the Lassen backcountry is patchy anyway, which is part of the charm. Campervan rental Westwood options (Class B vans) trade some space for excellent fuel economy. Check the listing's amenity list and message your host to confirm any must-haves before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westwood%2C%20CaliforniaWhat popular add-ons and pickup options can I expect with a motorhome rental Westwood?
Motorhome rental Westwood listings often come with handy add-ons that make life easier: bedding and linen packages, full kitchen kits, portable generators for boondocking near Eagle Lake, bike racks, paddleboards, kayaks, and propane fire pits (great when wood fires are banned during fire season). Pickup is usually at the host's home in Westwood, Chester, or the Lake Almanor area, with most owners offering a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Delivery to a specific campground is widely available for a per-mile fee. Ask about a pre-stocked starter kit if it is your first time, it is a small add-on for a big convenience boost on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westwood%2C%20CaliforniaHow do payments and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Westwood?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never cash or off-platform transfers (this protects you and keeps the protection plan valid). A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup, separate from the booking payment, and the amount depends on the RV. It is released after dropoff once the host confirms no damage, no missing items, and a properly emptied waste tank. To avoid issues, take a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, follow the fueling and cleaning instructions in the listing, and respect the mileage allowance. That is it, you are set for a smooth Westwood RV trip.
