Campgrounds near Allenspark, Colorado
Allenspark sits in the foothills of Colorado's Front Range at roughly 8,500 feet, positioned between Estes Park to the north and Lyons to the east along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. The village serves as a quiet base for the southeastern side of Rocky Mountain National Park, with the Wild Basin and Longs Peak trailheads within a short drive.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a reasonable radius. Inside Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier Basin - Rocky Mountain National Park offers reservation-only sites along Bear Lake Road with no hookups but full support facilities. In and around Estes Park, private parks such as Manor RV Park and Motel, Spruce Lake RV Park, Paradise RV and Travel Park, and Elk Meadow Lodge And RV Resort provide full-hookup sites, showers, and easier access to town services.
Elevation shapes the trip. Nights cool sharply even in summer, thunderstorms build fast on July and August afternoons, and snow lingers on higher trails into June.
Things to do near Allenspark
Rocky Mountain National Park is the anchor activity. The Wild Basin area, reached from a turnoff just north of Allenspark, has family-friendly hikes to Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades, and Ouzel Falls. Longs Peak, Chasm Lake, and the Bear Lake corridor trailheads (Emerald Lake, Sky Pond, Nymph Lake) are all within a short drive.
Outside the park boundary, Roosevelt National Forest surrounds the village with fishing lakes, forest roads, and picnic areas. Estes Park adds shopping, rafting outfitters, the aerial tramway, and Lake Estes for paddling and shore fishing.
For scenic driving, Trail Ridge Road climbs above 12,000 feet across the tundra between Estes Park and Grand Lake, typically open from Memorial Day weekend into mid-October depending on snow.

The usable RV season is short. Rocky Mountain National Park's Glacier Basin Campground typically operates from late May through early September, matching the window when Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake shuttles, and higher trailheads are reliably snow-free. Private parks around Estes Park generally open earlier and close later, with some staying open year-round in a limited capacity.
Summer, from mid-June through August, is peak season. Days run mild at elevation, afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily, and lightning above treeline is a real hazard. Wildflowers peak in July. September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and elk rut in the meadows around Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park.
Winter closes higher elevations. Trail Ridge Road shuts for the season, most in-park campgrounds close, and Allenspark itself sees heavy snow. March and April are the snowiest months at this elevation, so shoulder-season trips before Memorial Day should plan for winter driving conditions.

We took Luna all around Colorado for a full week and had an amazing time. She was very comfortable and powerful enough to get us wherever we wanted to go. It was the perfect way to see parts of the state that aren't readily available for "regular" camping -- highly recommended!

We could not have had a better experience! Joe was just incredibly helpful. The camper was perfect for us. Would do it again in a heartbeat, in fact my grandson didn’t want to leave.
Melissa M. - Aug 2025
Thanks Joe for everything. The RV was perfect for our little family's trip. We spent 31 nights and travelled through 7 States and 9 National Parks driving over 3,500 miles. The RV was our little home and we miss it! perfect for us and our two kids who slept in the bed above the cab. The kitchen was well laid out and had everything we needed. The added bonuses wer having the bike rack for our three bikes and Starlink! I run my own business and was able to stay on top of my work wherever we pulled up at night. Highly recommend renting from Joe and this RV.

How to book campgrounds near Allenspark
Rocky Mountain National Park campgrounds, including Glacier Basin, are reservation-only through Recreation.gov. Standard sites open on a rolling six-month window, and group sites open up to a year out. Summer weekends at Glacier Basin typically fill the moment the window releases, so setting an alarm for the release time is realistic advice.
A camping reservation at Glacier Basin includes the Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road vehicle reservation for the length of the stay, which is a meaningful benefit during peak season when day-use permits sell out quickly.
Private parks in Estes Park such as Manor RV Park and Motel, Spruce Lake RV Park, Paradise RV and Travel Park, and Elk Meadow Lodge And RV Resort are booked directly through the operator. Book full-hookup sites two to four months ahead for July and August, and confirm rig length limits before locking in dates.
What to expect on an RV trip to Allenspark
Expect narrow, winding mountain roads. The Peak to Peak Byway and the approach to Wild Basin are paved but tight in spots, and Glacier Basin caps vehicle length at 35 feet including tow setups. Confirm rig dimensions against each campground's listed maximum before departure.
In-park campgrounds have no hookups. Drinking water, flush toilets, and a dump station are provided, but there are no showers and no electric or sewer at the site. Private parks in Estes Park cover the hookup gap and add laundry, Wi-Fi, and pull-through options.
Altitude affects everyone. Plan an easier first day, hydrate heavily, and store all food, coolers, and scented items in bear boxes or inside the rig. Cell service is spotty once off the main highway, so download offline maps before arriving.
