Campgrounds and RV parks near Altona, CO

Rocky Mountain National Park is the dominant draw. The park offers alpine driving on Trail Ridge Road, hiking around Bear Lake, and wildlife viewing in the Kawuneeche Valley and Moraine Park. Golden Gate Canyon State Park, southwest of Altona, provides an alternative with over 35 miles of trails through mountain meadows, streamside corridors, and dense forest, plus the Panorama Point overlook of the Continental Divide. Closer to Altona, the towns of Lyons and Boulder offer river access on the St. Vrain and Boulder Creek, brewery stops, and gear shops. Estes Park serves as the main hub for park visitors, with shops, riverwalk dining, and easy access to trailheads. Fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding are widely available at state park and private campground trailheads.

Peak season along the Front Range runs from late May through September. Rocky Mountain National Park operates a timed-entry reservation system from May 22 through mid-October, with two permit types: Timed Entry, and Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road, which covers the busiest corridor. Reservations are released monthly on Recreation.gov, with additional next-day slots opening at 7 p.m. MDT the night before arrival. At Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Reverend's Ridge Campground remains open at limited capacity through winter, while the Aspen Meadows loop typically closes from late September to mid-May depending on weather. The camp office, shower building, laundry facilities, and dump station at Reverend's Ridge close in winter, though flush toilets and sinks remain available behind the campground office. Mountain weather changes quickly. Trail Ridge Road inside Rocky Mountain National Park usually closes with the first heavy snowfall in October and reopens in late May. Wildfire restrictions and fire bans are common in summer, so RV renters should check current park alerts before travel.

Elevation matters. Reverend's Ridge sits near 9,163 feet, and Rocky Mountain National Park campgrounds range from about 7,600 to 8,900 feet. Expect cool nights even in July, faster fuel burn on climbs, and the possibility of altitude effects for first-time visitors. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, especially in July and August. At state park sites, RV campers should plan for bear-aware food storage, pack-in and pack-out trash rules, and hot showers at Reverend's Ridge during the warm season. Reverend's Ridge accommodates rigs from about 20 to 50 feet, with electric hookups at many sites and a dump station in season. Cell service is spotty in the canyons, and coverage varies by carrier. Private parks near Estes Park and Lyons generally offer full hookups, laundry, and family amenities, and are well suited to travelers who want a base camp with easier park access.
