Campgrounds and RV parks near Coal Creek, CO

Coal Creek sits along Highway 72 in the Front Range foothills of Jefferson County, roughly halfway between Boulder and the casino towns of Black Hawk and Central City. The area is a practical base for RV travelers who want quick access to Golden Gate Canyon State Park, the Peak to Peak Highway, and Denver's western suburbs without camping directly on the plains. Elevations at nearby campgrounds range from about 7,700 feet at Chief Hosa Campground to over 9,000 feet at Reverend's Ridge, which sits at 9,163 feet, so plan for cool nights year round. The closest developed options are inside Golden Gate Canyon State Park, where Reverends Ridge - Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers electric hookup sites, and Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon provides a nearby private alternative. Denver West / Central City KOA Holiday adds full-hookup and big-rig capacity a short drive south. For travelers heading toward I-70 and the Denver Mountain Parks, Chief Hosa Campground and Cottonwood RV Camp round out the list, both within about a 30 to 45 minute drive of Coal Creek.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park uses the Colorado Parks and Wildlife system. Reservations go live online through CPWshop.com and by phone at 1-800-244-5613, and can be made no more than six months before the arrival date. A valid reservation and a vehicle pass are both required, so budget for the daily or annual parks pass in addition to the site fee. Chief Hosa Campground is booked through the City and County of Denver's online reservation portal. As of January 1, 2022, Chief Hosa requires a camping reservation, no in-person or phone payments are accepted, and same-day reservations must be booked through the online system. Denver West / Central City KOA Holiday takes online and phone reservations through KOA.com during the regular season. For Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon and Cottonwood RV Camp, book directly through each operator's website.
