Campgrounds and RV parks near Dove Creek, CO

Dove Creek sits on U.S. Highway 491 in far southwestern Colorado, roughly 40 miles north of Cortez and within easy reach of the Four Corners. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, a large tract of federal land administered by the Bureau of Land Management, along with nearby Hovenweep National Monument on the Utah border. Camping options in the area range from developed private RV parks to a single reservable national-monument campground and dispersed sites on BLM land. Named options travelers use as a base include Sun Canyon Ranch, Gemstone Campground, Hovenweep National Monument Campground, The Views RV Park and Campground, and Westerner RV Park. The landscape is high desert and pinyon-juniper country on the Colorado Plateau, with sweeping views toward Sleeping Ute Mountain. Hovenweep National Monument is an International Dark Sky Park, and it is the first dark sky park to span two states, which makes the region a strong pick for stargazing families and anyone chasing meteor showers or dark, quiet nights.

The one federally managed campground in the area is Hovenweep National Monument Campground. Reservations are booked through Recreation.gov, and the campground contains 31 sites, with 10 designated as RV-specific (including one ADA-accessible site) and the remaining 21 with tent pads. Length of stay is limited to seven nights, consecutively or non-consecutively, in any 30-day period, and 14 nights total per year. Private parks such as Sun Canyon Ranch, Gemstone Campground, The Views RV Park and Campground, and Westerner RV Park are booked directly with the operator, typically by phone or website. Reserve early for spring and fall weekends. For dispersed camping in Canyons of the Ancients, primitive backcountry camping is allowed without reservations, subject to Tres Rios Field Office rules.
