Campgrounds and RV parks near Eldorado Springs, CO

Eldorado Canyon State Park is the headline attraction, with sandstone climbing routes, South Boulder Creek, and hiking trails that climb to overlooks of the Continental Divide. The historic Eldorado Springs Pool, fed by artesian springs, is a summer draw for families. West of town, Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers over 35 miles of trails through high mountain meadows, streamside corridors, rocky peaks, and dense forest, all within about an hour of the Denver metro area. Panorama Point Scenic Overlook offers views of more than 100 miles of the Continental Divide. The park has hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails, fishing in stocked ponds, and wildlife including deer, moose, and a range of birds. Boulder's Pearl Street, the Flatirons trails at Chautauqua, and Golden's Clear Creek whitewater park are all within a short drive.

Peak camping season in the foothills runs from late May through September, when daytime temperatures are warm and mountain trails are largely snow-free. Sites at popular state park campgrounds book well ahead for summer weekends, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. Elevation matters: campgrounds range from around 5,700 feet in Eldorado Springs to over 9,000 feet at Reverends Ridge, so nights can be cool even in midsummer. Shoulder seasons bring aspen color in late September and early October and quieter trails in May, though snow is possible in both months. The higher campgrounds sit near 9,000 feet, so cool nights and rapidly changing mountain weather are normal, with rain, snow, and strong sun all possible. Winter camping is limited but not closed. Aspen Meadows campground at Golden Gate Canyon is closed in winter, typically from late September through mid May depending on weather, while yurts and cabins remain available year-round and Reverend's Ridge stays open at limited capacity, though the camp office, shower building, laundry, and dump station are closed in winter. Private RV parks at lower elevations generally operate year-round.

RV travelers should plan for mountain driving. Roads into Golden Gate Canyon climb from Golden and involve grades and switchbacks, and towing routes differ from car routes into the park. At Reverend's Ridge, 58 sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 20 and 50 feet, and 65 sites have electric hookups, but full hookups are more common at private parks closer to the plains. Reverend's Ridge sits at an elevation of 9,163 feet, so expect cool nights, thinner air, and quick weather changes. Bear-resistant food storage lockers are provided at sites to keep wildlife away from human food. Cell service is very limited in the canyons and along Golden Gate Canyon Road. Fire restrictions are common in summer, so check current park alerts before lighting a campfire, and top off water and fuel in Golden or Boulder before heading into the foothills.
