Campgrounds and RV parks near Flagler, CO

Flagler Reservoir State Wildlife Area is the main outdoor draw. Even with the reservoir often dry, the parcel supports deer, dove, pheasant, rabbit, turkey, and waterfowl, and it draws hunters and anglers when conditions allow. Wildlife watching, walking the access roads, and dark-sky stargazing are the practical day-to-day activities. Families traveling with kids can use Genoa RV Park as a base: a town playground sits directly across the street, and an on-site cafe is a short walk. Genoa is also known for the historic Wonder Tower, a roadside curiosity from 1926 that has been closed to visitors in recent years. Further afield, Limon lies about 25 miles west on I-70 with fuel, groceries, and services, and Burlington to the east is home to the Kit Carson County Carousel, a 1905 National Historic Landmark open seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Late spring through early fall is the practical camping window on Colorado's eastern plains. May through September brings warm days, long daylight, and the best odds of dry roads on the gravel and dirt access routes leading to Flagler Reservoir State Wildlife Area. Summer thunderstorms are common in the afternoons and can produce brief downpours, hail, and strong wind, so travel is easier in the mornings when possible. Fall is often the sweet spot for RV travel here. Cooler temperatures, lighter crowds, and the opening of big-game and upland bird seasons bring hunters to the wildlife area. Camping at Flagler Reservoir is permitted for licensed hunters during big-game season and spring and fall turkey seasons, plus three days before and three days after each season, or while actively fishing. Winter camping is possible at private parks such as Genoa RV Park, which stays open year-round, but expect cold nights, wind, and occasional snow that can drift across county roads.

Flagler Reservoir State Wildlife Area is primitive: dispersed sites, vault toilets, picnic shelters, no water, no electric, no dump station, and dirt access roads that can turn slick after rain. The reservoir itself has been drained in recent years, so plan for a dry basin rather than swimming or boating. Interior roads and the east entrance from Seibert have been reported closed; the western access from Flagler off I-70 exit 395 is the reliable route. Genoa RV Park offers full hookups with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, pull-through sites, restrooms, a free dump station, free Wi-Fi, and a covered pavilion with gas grills. Cell service on Verizon and AT&T is generally solid along the I-70 corridor. Bring bug protection in summer, layers for cool nights, and check road conditions before towing on unpaved routes.
