Camping near Gilcrest, Colorado
Gilcrest sits on the flat South Platte River plain in Weld County, roughly halfway between Greeley and the Denver metro area along U.S. Highway 85. The town works as a low-key base for RV travellers who want quick access to the northern Front Range without paying resort-town rates or navigating mountain grades.
Most camping options in the immediate area are private RV parks rather than public campgrounds. Greeley RV Park is the closest full-service option to the north, while Platte River Fort Resort and Event Center and RV Retreat at Johnson's Corner offer river-adjacent and highway-convenient stops within a short drive. Falcons Landing RV Park and Loveland RV Resort extend the choices west toward Interstate 25 and the foothills.
From Gilcrest, Rocky Mountain National Park sits about ninety minutes west, Pawnee National Grassland lies to the northeast, and several Colorado state parks with reservable campgrounds are within an hour, including St. Vrain and Boyd Lake.
Things to do around Gilcrest
The area suits travellers who want a mix of city day-trips and outdoor recreation. Greeley offers the Colorado Model Railroad Museum, Island Grove Regional Park, and downtown restaurants, while Loveland is known for the Benson Sculpture Garden and easy access to Boyd Lake for swimming, fishing, and boating.
Pawnee National Grassland stretches northeast toward the Wyoming and Nebraska borders, with sandstone formations rising from the surrounding grass. Rocky Mountain National Park is the marquee day trip: expect elk viewing in Moraine Park, high-alpine driving on Trail Ridge Road when it is open, and trailheads around Bear Lake. A timed-entry reservation is required to enter the park during peak daytime hours in summer and early fall.
Closer to camp, the South Platte River corridor offers walk-in fishing, birdwatching, and quiet cycling on rural county roads.

The Gilcrest area has a semi-arid, four-season climate. Spring high temperatures climb from the mid-fifties in March to the low seventies by May, but April and May are the wettest months and can bring heavy wet snow, hail, and thunderstorms. Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park typically does not fully open until late May or early June.
Summer is peak camping season on the plains and in the mountains. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially in July and August, and Front Range state park campgrounds fill on weekends. High-use Front Range state parks release inventory on a rolling six-month window, so summer weekends are often claimed the morning they open.
Fall brings cool nights, clear days, and thinning crowds. The likelihood of precipitation drops sharply in October. Winter is cold and windy, with periodic snow, but many private RV parks near Gilcrest and lower-elevation state parks stay open year-round for self-contained rigs.

Susan was an excellent host and the teardrop was the perfect camper for our trip. We used this rental as a test run for eventually building one ourselves and it’s safe to say we’re sold on the idea! Susan was also very flexible on the pickup and drop off times which made the trip very easy on both ends.

How to book campgrounds near Gilcrest
Private RV parks in the Gilcrest, Greeley, Johnstown, and Loveland corridor are booked directly through each property's website or by phone. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book out first, and rigs over thirty-five feet should confirm site length and pull-through availability before arriving.
Colorado state parks are reservation only, with no walk-up camping, and reservations can be made no more than six months before the arrival date. Reservations are made online at cpwshop.com or by phone at 1-800-244-5613, and new dates open at midnight Mountain Time. Popular Front Range parks such as Boyd Lake and St. Vrain release inventory on a rolling six-month window, so summer weekends are often claimed the same morning they open.
What to expect on the ground
Gilcrest itself is a small farming town, so groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are easier to source in Greeley, Johnstown, or Loveland. Cell coverage is generally strong along the U.S. 85 and Interstate 25 corridors and drops off in the grassland to the east and in Rocky Mountain National Park canyons.
Elevation at Gilcrest is roughly 4,700 feet, so allow a day to acclimate before hiking at higher altitudes. Wind is a regular feature on the plains, particularly in spring: awnings and lightweight gear should be secured.
Camping at Colorado state parks is capped at 14 days in any 28-day period, and fire restrictions allowing only propane and gas stoves can be in effect during dry stretches, so check park alerts before travel.
