Campgrounds near Granby, Colorado
Granby sits in Grand County on the western side of the Continental Divide, about twenty minutes south of the Grand Lake entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the park, the Arapaho National Recreation Area, and the string of reservoirs along US Highway 34. Lake Granby, one of the largest bodies of water in Colorado, sits ten minutes north of town and anchors most of the region's camping.
Campground options range from full-service RV resorts to National Forest sites and glamping. Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains, formerly River Run RV Resort, is the closest resort-style option in town, with full-hookup sites, a pool, and hot tubs. Snow Mountain Ranch / YMCA of the Rockies offers RV sites and cabins on a large property between Granby and Winter Park. Arapaho Valley Ranch provides lodging near Lake Granby, and Grand Lake/Rocky Mountain National Park KOA sits near the park's west entrance.
Elevations here run from about 8,000 to 8,900 feet, so weather changes fast and shade is limited at many National Forest sites due to past pine beetle damage.
Things to do near Granby
The Grand Lake entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is roughly twenty minutes north on Highway 34. From the west side, visitors can reach the headwaters of the Colorado River, hike along the Colorado River Trail, or drive Trail Ridge Road across the park to Estes Park when it is open. The park has more than 350 miles of hiking trails, and mule deer, elk, and moose are commonly seen.
Lake Granby, Shadow Mountain Reservoir, Willow Creek Reservoir, and Monarch Lake all offer boating, paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing for kokanee salmon and rainbow, brown, mackinaw, and cutthroat trout. Granby Ranch offers lift-served downhill mountain biking just south of town, and Winter Park Resort, about 30 minutes south, runs a summer bike park and adventure activities.
Hot Sulphur Springs is about 20 miles from Granby for a soak after a long hike.

Summer is the busiest and easiest season for RV travel. June through August brings comfortable daytime temperatures, drier conditions than spring, and full campground operations. It is also the busiest tourism period, so lodging and campsites should be booked well in advance. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains during summer, so an early start on hikes and drives is smart.
Late September is a popular time for fall color in the aspens around Lake Granby, and crowds thin after Labor Day. Overnight temperatures drop sharply in September and October, and Timber Creek Campground inside Rocky Mountain National Park typically closes for the season in the fall. Spring is a transitional shoulder season with lingering snow at higher elevations and some of the wettest months of the year for precipitation.
Winter brings deep snow, freezing overnight lows, and skiing at Winter Park and Granby Ranch. The Grand Lake entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park stays open year-round, but Trail Ridge Road closes to through traffic in the winter months.
How to book a campsite near Granby
Rocky Mountain National Park campgrounds, including Timber Creek on the west side near Granby, are booked through Recreation.gov, with sites released up to six months in advance on a rolling window. Reservations are strongly recommended for peak summer dates because demand is high. Timber Creek has a 30-foot vehicle length limit and no hookups, and it operates during the summer camping season only.
Arapaho National Forest campgrounds around Lake Granby, such as Arapaho Bay, Stillwater, and Green Ridge, are also booked through Recreation.gov, and campers accessing fee areas within the Arapaho National Recreation Area must have an ANRA Pass or a valid Interagency Pass.
Private resorts such as Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains, Snow Mountain Ranch / YMCA of the Rockies, Arapaho Valley Ranch, and Grand Lake/Rocky Mountain National Park KOA book directly through their own websites or reservation lines.
What to expect
Granby-area campgrounds sit at elevations between roughly 8,000 and 8,900 feet, so expect thinner air, stronger sun, and cold nights even in summer. Many National Forest sites around Lake Granby have limited shade due to past mountain pine beetle damage and hazardous tree removal, so awnings and sun protection are useful.
Amenities vary widely. Timber Creek in Rocky Mountain National Park has flush toilets, potable water, a dump station, and fire rings, but no showers, no hookups, and no cell reception. Stillwater on Lake Granby has showers, a dump station, and a limited number of electric sites. Private resorts near Granby generally offer full hookups, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and fire restrictions can be in effect on National Forest and National Park land.
Black bear and moose are present, so food storage rules apply. Rocky Mountain National Park uses timed-entry reservations in peak season, though a valid in-park campground reservation covers entry.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Granby, CO
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Granby, CO?
RV rental in Granby is more affordable than most people expect, with travel trailers typically starting around $90 to $150 per night, campervans around $150 to $225, and larger Class C motorhomes ranging from $200 to $325 per night during summer peak. You can save real money by booking shoulder season (late May or September), choosing a slightly older trailer, or filtering for hosts who offer unlimited mileage so a Rocky Mountain National Park loop does not add surprise fees. Pro tip: midweek pickups in Granby often run 15 to 25 percent cheaper than Friday starts, and that savings can easily cover your Arapaho National Recreation Area pass and a fly fishing license on the Colorado River.
colorado.com/articles/colorado-rv-camping-guideDo I need a special license to drive an RV rental in Granby, Colorado?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Granby, Colorado. Colorado does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any RV-specific endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers booked through RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and fifth wheels. Approved drivers are generally required to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens automatically during the booking process. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is, and your host will walk you through every switch and hookup at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Granby RV rental?
Every RV rental in Granby booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the Arapaho National Forest with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), which means you decide how much extra cushion you want for that mountain road trip. The plan covers physical damage to the RV up to the limits of the package you select, and roadside assistance is included with every protection plan. If anything happens, whether it is a flat on US-40 near Berthoud Pass or a slide-out issue at Stillwater Campground, one call gets help dispatched. Book confidently and focus on the views.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Granby RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Granby is lower risk than most travelers assume. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and you have a short grace period right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, your refund depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or issues travel credits so you can rebook. Because Colorado mountain weather can shift quickly, we recommend booking early to lock in your dates and reviewing the current cancellation terms on the RVezy website before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Granby?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Granby is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see dozens of motorhomes and trailers whose owners welcome dogs (small cleaning fee usually applies). Granby is one of the most dog-friendly basecamps in Colorado: the Arapaho National Recreation Area allows leashed pets on most trails around Lake Granby, and the Fraser River Trail just down the valley is a flat, scenic walk. Note that Rocky Mountain National Park restricts dogs to paved areas and campgrounds, so plan your hikes in the surrounding national forest instead. Stillwater Campground is a great pet-friendly overnight choice.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/arp/recarea/?recid=80694Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Granby?
Yes, RV delivery in Granby is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip mountain driving on US-40. Many hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer straight to Stillwater Campground, Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains (formerly River Run RV Resort), Winding River Resort, or a private property, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Just filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your campsite number. Pro tip: hosts often deliver to nearby Grand Lake and Winter Park too, which makes a multi-stop Colorado RV trip stress-free from minute one.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234093How far can I drive on a Granby RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You can absolutely roam from Granby, and yes, many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage (filter for it before booking). Even with capped mileage, the typical 100 to 150 free miles per day comfortably covers the best loops: Rocky Mountain National Park's Trail Ridge Road is about 50 miles round trip from town, Steamboat Springs is roughly 90 miles northwest, Hot Sulphur Springs is just 10 miles west, and Estes Park via Trail Ridge is around 60 miles (summer only). If you are planning a longer RV road trip from Granby to Glenwood Springs or Aspen, message the host for an unlimited-mileage quote, which is usually a flat add-on.
codot.gov/travel/scenic-byways/north-central/trail-ridge-roadWhere are the best campgrounds near Granby for RV camping?

Arapaho Bay Campground on the eastern tip of the lake has 84 quiet non-electric sites with epic Indian Peaks views. Sunset Point Campground is first-come, first-served (great if you are flexible). For full hookups, Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains right in Granby and Winding River Resort along the Colorado River near Grand Lake are excellent choices. All campers in the Arapaho National Recreation Area need a recreation area pass on top of their site fee, which you can grab at the entrance station.

May and early June can still see snow at higher elevations (Trail Ridge Road typically does not fully open until Memorial Day weekend). Winter is a true adventure: Granby Ranch and Winter Park ski hills are minutes away, and a handful of hosts offer cold-weather-ready rigs with heated tanks. Book summer dates at least 3 to 4 months ahead for the best selection.

Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery): how to level, hook up power and water, dump the tanks, run the furnace for those cool mountain nights, and use the slide-outs. You can also message the host with questions before you even book. For your first trip, pick a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer, choose a campground with full hookups like Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains, and ease into it. Within a day you will feel like a pro, and the host is one text away the entire trip.
nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Granby through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with your protection plan, so a flat tire on US-34, a dead battery at Arapaho Bay, or a propane issue at 9,000 feet is one phone call away from getting solved. Your host is also a direct line for quick questions, like how to relight the water heater after a windy night. For anything bigger, RVezy's customer support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave town, since cell coverage gets spotty past Lake Granby toward Grand Lake.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Granby RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, RV road trip from Granby travelers regularly cross into Wyoming, Utah, and beyond, all of which are easy day drives. Popular routes include Granby to Jackson Hole and Grand Teton (around 380 miles north via US-40 and US-191), Granby to Moab, Utah (about 280 miles southwest), and the classic Colorado loop through Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs, and Aspen. Most hosts welcome interstate travel, just confirm in your booking message. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Canada may be allowed with host approval. Always confirm cross-border plans with your host in writing before departure.
codot.gov/travelWhat is fuel going to cost on a Granby RV trip?
Budgeting fuel for your Granby RV trip is straightforward. Travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck average 10 to 13 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically run 6 to 9 MPG, with mountain driving on the lower end of those ranges. Colorado gas prices generally track close to the national average, though stations in Granby and Grand Lake can run 20 to 40 cents higher than down-valley spots like Kremmling or Idaho Springs. Pro tip: fill up in Granby on your way in from Denver since stations past Lake Granby are sparse, and use the descent off Berthoud Pass to coast and save fuel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Granby?
Book early and you will get the prime spots. Stillwater, Arapaho Bay, and Green Ridge campgrounds on Lake Granby release reservations on a rolling 6-month basis through Recreation.gov, and prime July and August weekends sell out within minutes of opening. Rocky Mountain National Park's Timber Creek Campground on the west side (just 30 minutes from Granby) also books 6 months out. Private parks like Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains and Winding River Resort accept reservations a year in advance. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target date at 8 AM Mountain Time, and have a backup site picked out. Sunset Point is first-come, first-served if plans shift.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234093What are the driving conditions like around Granby, Colorado?
Driving an RV in and around Granby is very manageable, just plan for elevation. US-40 from Denver climbs over Berthoud Pass at 11,307 feet, with steady grades and a few switchbacks, so take it slow in lower gears and let your brakes cool on the descent. Once you are in the Fraser Valley, roads are wide, well-maintained, and RV-friendly. Avoid driving Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park in larger Class A motorhomes (it is allowed, but tight). Winter travelers should check Colorado's chain law on CDOT before heading over the pass. Pro tip: drive over Berthoud in the morning when traffic and afternoon thunderstorms are lighter.
codot.gov/travel/winter-driving/chainlawWhat hookups and amenities will I find at Granby-area campgrounds?
Granby-area campgrounds range from full-service resorts to rustic forest sites, so you can pick what matches your comfort level. Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains and Winding River Resort offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and dump stations. Forest Service campgrounds on Lake Granby like Stillwater have some electric sites and potable water fill stations, but most are dry camping with vault toilets. The closest public dump stations are at Stillwater Campground and the Sun Outdoors property. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Granby before heading deeper into the Arapaho National Recreation Area, and grab firewood at the Granby Ace Hardware (Colorado bans bringing firewood across county lines to protect against beetles).
fs.usda.gov/recarea/arp/recarea/?recid=80694What is inside a typical Granby RV rental?
You will be impressed by how dialed-in these rigs are for Colorado's mountain weather. A typical motorhome rental in Granby sleeps 4 to 8 people in real beds (queen in back, convertible dinette, sometimes a bunk or cab-over), and includes a full kitchen with propane stove, fridge/freezer, microwave, and a bathroom with shower and toilet. Almost every listing has a furnace (essential at 7,900 feet, even in July nights drop to the 40s), roof AC, and built-in heater for the holding tanks. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in the mountains, so consider booking a campervan rental Granby travelers love with a cellular hotspot setup.
colorado.com/articles/colorado-rv-camping-guideWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Granby RV rental?
Granby hosts offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make trip planning easy. Common extras include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30), bedding and linen packages ($40 to $75), portable generators ($50 per day), bike racks, grills, propane fire pits (a smart pick since fire bans hit Grand County most summers), and stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Granby, Tabernash, Fraser, or Winter Park, with delivery available for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary, so look for unlimited mileage if you are planning a big Rocky Mountain loop. Pro tip: a propane fire pit keeps your evenings cozy even during stage 1 or 2 fire restrictions, which are common July through September.
colorado.gov/airquality/wood_burning.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Granby RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly when you book (no cash handed to the host), with the total covering the nightly rate, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons you selected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and it is released after a smooth return. To make sure you get it back in full, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup (snap photos), respect the mileage and pet rules, dump the tanks if required, and return the rig with the same fuel level. Most renters in Granby get their deposit refunded within a few business days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather and winter RV camping in Granby?
Winter RV camping in Granby is a true Rocky Mountain adventure, and yes, it is doable. A handful of hosts offer four-season rigs with heated and enclosed holding tanks, skirting, double-pane windows, and shore-power hookups designed for sub-freezing nights (Granby regularly drops below 0°F in January). Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains stays open year-round with full hookups, and you are only 15 minutes from Winter Park Resort and 5 minutes from Granby Ranch ski hill. Filter for winter-ready listings and message the host to confirm the rig is rated for the temperatures you expect. Pro tip: book a site with 50-amp shore power so you can run electric heat alongside the propane furnace, which saves a lot of refills.
