Campgrounds and RV parks near Keystone, CO

Keystone Resort operates connected mountains with lift-served mountain biking, gondola sightseeing, and a summer adventure park. Dillon Reservoir, a short drive west, is an ideal spot for fishing, boating, and sailing, and the reservoir supports a healthy population of rainbow and brown trout, though body contact with the reservoir is prohibited, meaning no swimming, water skiing, jetskiing, or scuba diving. Hiking and biking are the main summer draws. More than 7 paved miles of the 50-mile Summit County trail system link Keystone to Dillon, Frisco, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain, making it easy to leave the RV parked and ride between towns. Trailheads into the Ptarmigan Peak and Eagles Nest Wilderness areas are within a short drive. In winter, Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain ski resorts are all located within 10 miles of Dillon Reservoir.

The prime RV season runs late June through early September, when daytime highs sit in the mid-60s Fahrenheit and overnight lows stay in the 30s and 40s. Forest Service campgrounds around Dillon Reservoir, including seasonal facilities like Peak One, Prospector, Heaton Bay, and Lowry, generally open in mid to late May and close by early October. Summer weekends fill months ahead, and afternoon thunderstorms roll through most days. Spring is unpredictable. April brings some of the heaviest snowfall of the year in the Dillon area, and mountain passes can close on short notice. Fall brings quieter campgrounds, aspen color in late September, and freezing overnight temperatures by mid-October. Winter camping is limited to a few private year-round parks. Public campgrounds close for the season, and fire restrictions may be imposed at any time due to hot, dry weather conditions, at which time campfires and charcoal fires may not be allowed. Sites in Summit County sit between about 9,000 and 9,400 feet. Altitude affects sleep, appetite, and generator performance, so plan a lighter first day and hydrate aggressively. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine in July and August; secure awnings before leaving camp. Forest Service campgrounds near Dillon Reservoir generally have picnic tables, campfire rings, and drinking water, though flush toilets can be temporarily out of service with vault toilets in place. Water is not currently available at Lowry, Prospector, and Windy Point campgrounds. Electrical hookups are available for a fee at certain loops such as Heaton Bay, while other sites offer none, and no sewer hookups are available at forest sites. Private resorts in the corridor typically offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Black bears are active in the valley. All food, beverages, trash and scented items must be properly stored when not attended, and bear-proof food lockers are provided at each site.
