Campgrounds near Kiowa, Colorado
Kiowa is a small town on Colorado Highway 86 in Elbert County, roughly 40 miles southeast of Denver and 50 miles northeast of Colorado Springs. The surrounding landscape is rolling short-grass prairie meeting the Palmer Divide, sitting near 6,175 feet where prairie meets foothills. RV travelers use Kiowa as a quieter base between the two Front Range metros, with easy pavement access in most directions.
Private RV parks anchor the local options. Cadillac Jack's RV Park and Campground sits closest to town, and Golden Gun Club provides another nearby stopover. To the south and east, Falcon/Colorado Springs NE KOA and Denver East / Strasburg KOA Holiday give full-hookup pull-through service near the interstates. Jellystone Park at Larkspur adds a family-focused resort roughly half an hour west.
For day trips, Castlewood Canyon State Park is a day-use only park in the Black Forest region of Colorado, preserving 2,628 acres of natural landscape carved by Cherry Creek, with 12 miles of trails and views of the Front Range and Pikes Peak.
Things to do near Kiowa
Hiking is the main draw within a short drive. Castlewood Canyon State Park offers about 12 miles of trails for all skill levels, from easy paved paths to canyon hikes, with panoramic views of the Front Range and Pikes Peak. The park protects the ruins of the historic Castlewood Dam, which failed in August 1933 and flooded Denver, giving families a short history stop between hikes.
Rock climbing draws visitors to Castlewood's canyon walls, which reach up to 60 feet, and cyclists use the wide shoulders along Highway 86. Cherry Creek State Park and Chatfield State Park are within an hour for boating and swim beaches. Colorado Springs attractions, including Garden of the Gods and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, are reachable as a full-day outing from any of the Kiowa-area campgrounds.
Jellystone Park at Larkspur adds on-site activities aimed at kids, useful when weather or wildfire smoke limits regional plans.

Summer is the primary RV season on the Palmer Divide. Daytime highs run in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, but afternoon thunderstorms are common: July is the wettest month in Kiowa, with rain on roughly 18 days and totals near 71 mm. Storms typically build after noon, so morning hikes and afternoon shade are the standard rhythm.
Spring and fall bring wide temperature swings. May and September usually offer the calmest weather for touring, with cooler nights that still allow full-hookup camping. Wildfire and Red Flag warnings can occur across the Front Range in dry, windy stretches, and open burning, fireworks, and campfires are prohibited under standing fire restrictions at Castlewood Canyon.
Winter camping is possible but limited. December is Kiowa's coldest month, with average highs near 39 F and lows near 21 F, and snow can close roads on the divide. Several private parks reduce services or shift to monthly stays during the cold months, so confirming winter hookups is essential before arrival.

We had a wonderful time renting Barry’s RV! Barry was wonderful to work with, helping me adjust my dates when our plans changed. He was quick to respond, even for small questions. His RV had everything my family of 6 hoped for: bed linens, pillows, towels, dishes, pots and pans, utensils….. on and on. It was so well stocked. The RV was easier to drive than I expected and had several external cameras for helping with turns and lane changes. Barry made our trip a success and I can’t wait to rent from him again!

Barry was super easy to work with and will definitely be booking with him again on our next trip to the Denver area!

Booking and reservations
State-managed sites use one system. Colorado state parks have a six-month advance campsite reservation window, and all state parks are reservation only, with a reservation made no more than six months before the arrival date. Bookings go through CPWshop.com or by phone. Note that Castlewood Canyon is day-use only with no camping permitted; overnight stays in a state park require Cherry Creek, Chatfield, or a private park.
Private campgrounds run their own systems. Cadillac Jack's RV Park and Campground, Falcon/Colorado Springs NE KOA, Denver East / Strasburg KOA Holiday, and Jellystone Park at Larkspur take direct online or phone bookings. Parks near Denver and Colorado Springs are hardest to book because of proximity to the metro population, so reserve summer weekends and holiday windows well ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Elevation matters. Sites near Kiowa sit above 6,000 feet, so appliances, propane burn, and sleep patterns can behave differently than at sea level. Afternoon sun is intense; awnings and shade become priorities in July and August.
Wind is the second local factor. The Palmer Divide funnels gusts across open prairie year-round, and the area experiences frequent high winds and dusty conditions. Retract awnings when leaving the site, and check tie-downs before overnight storms.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along Highway 86 and near the KOAs, but drops in canyons and on ranch roads. Fuel and groceries are easiest in Elizabeth, Franktown, or Parker. Wildlife includes mule deer, coyotes, and pronghorn on the prairie edges, and food storage rules at private parks should be followed to avoid drawing raccoons and skunks.
