Campgrounds and RV parks near Lyons, CO

The St. Vrain River is popular for fly-fishing and tubing, and the Lyons Whitewater Park along the river features pools and eddies used by tubers and kayakers. Hall Ranch and Heil Valley Ranch Open Space offer well-known mountain biking and hiking trails minutes from downtown. Rocky Mountain National Park covers more than 400 square miles of mountain terrain, from montane meadows to alpine lakes and tundra, with hundreds of miles of hiking trails. Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake, Wild Basin, and Longs Peak are the marquee destinations for families basing out of Lyons. Closer to camp, downtown Lyons has walkable restaurants, breweries, and a live-music scene, and Bohn Park along the river includes a skate park and playground for kids winding down after a long drive.

Peak RV season runs from late May through September, driven by access to Rocky Mountain National Park. A timed entry reservation is required to enter the park between late May and mid-October during certain hours of the day. Sites at private RV parks in Lyons, Loveland, and Estes Park book heavily in July and August, especially around holiday weekends and the Trail Ridge Road opening. Spring is variable. Higher-elevation campgrounds in the national forest open later than valley sites, with Olive Ridge Campground near Allenspark typically running from early June into mid-September. Expect wet snow into May and afternoon thunderstorms once summer settles in. Fire restrictions are common during dry summer months, so campers should check current regulations before planning trips that include campfires. Fall brings the elk rut, aspen color in late September, and cooler nights. Winter operations shrink sharply. Most public and higher-elevation campgrounds close, and Trail Ridge Road is closed to through traffic. A limited number of private RV sites at lower elevation remain open year-round for travelers wanting quiet, off-season access to the foothills.

Lyons sits at roughly 5,400 feet, so nights stay cool even in July. Private RV parks in town and along the surrounding river corridors typically offer 20/30/50-amp electrical service with water and sewer at most sites, and many parks sit along a river, so expect river noise, cottonwood shade, and rocky ground for tent stakes. Cell coverage is reliable in town but drops off quickly up the canyons and inside Rocky Mountain National Park. Wildlife encounters, including deer, elk, and occasional bears, are routine, so food storage rules apply at most sites. Some properties restrict or prohibit open campfires when fire danger is elevated. Check current Boulder County and Roosevelt National Forest fire restrictions before your trip, and plan for propane cooking as a backup during dry summers.
