Campgrounds and RV parks near Upper Bear Creek, CO

Hiking, fishing, and scenic drives dominate the area. Evergreen Lake sits minutes away with paddle boats, walking paths, and trout fishing, and Bear Creek runs through the canyon with pocket water popular for fly fishing. Genesee Park hosts one of two bison herds owned by the City of Denver, and viewpoints along the American Bison Trail provide a gentle walk with a chance to see the animals in a natural setting. Staunton State Park ranges from high grassy meadows at 8,100 feet to soaring granite cliffs over 10,000 feet, and its varied geology, soils, and water features support a rich diversity of plant communities and wildlife. Park features include over 30 miles of trails, designated rock climbing areas, and fishing ponds. Day trips reach easily to Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Argo Mine in Idaho Springs, the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, and the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Clear Creek offers guided whitewater rafting in summer, and Loveland Ski Area is under an hour west.

Summer runs June through August and is the busiest camping window. Days are warm, wildflowers peak in July, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Reservations for popular sites fill weeks or months ahead, especially around holiday weekends and Red Rocks concert dates. Spring and fall offer thinner crowds but variable weather. Snow is possible into May and can return by mid-September at higher elevations. Aspen leaves change color in fall, drawing photographers and leaf-peepers, typically peaking late September into early October. Fire restrictions are common through the dry months, and campfire bans can extend into fall. Winter camping in the area is limited. Chief Hosa's RV and campground facilities close after the third week of September and reopen in May. Staunton is open year-round for camping, though the walk-in sites become genuine cold-weather ventures that require carrying gear from the parking lot. Private RV parks along the I-70 corridor, including Idaho Springs RV Resort & Campground, offer the most practical winter base for travelers heading to Loveland Ski Area.

Expect elevation. Most campgrounds in this area sit between 7,000 and 9,000 feet, so plan for cool nights even in summer, quick sunburn, and slower acclimatization. Bring layers, drink more water than usual, and give kids a day to adjust before big hikes. Wildlife is active. Black bears range through the entire area, and Staunton State Park is bear habitat where all tent sites have large bear-proof boxes for food and any items that might smell of food. Fires are prohibited in Staunton State Park, including charcoal and wood fires, but cook stoves using propane or white gas are allowed. Broader fire restrictions across Jefferson and Clear Creek counties are common in dry months. Cell coverage is spotty in canyons and thick timber. I-70 traffic noise reaches some sites at Chief Hosa. Roads to sites are generally paved or well-graded, but GPS routing can suggest dirt shortcuts that are not RV-friendly, so follow campground-provided directions.
