Campgrounds and RV parks near Vail, CO

Summer trips center on hiking and biking. A network of paved bike paths and scenic trails stretches roughly 60 miles from Breckenridge to Vail, making Tiger Run RV Resort a practical base for cycling families. White River National Forest trailheads around Vail Pass, Piney Lake and the Holy Cross Wilderness are within a short drive. Water recreation is a draw at Sylvan Lake State Park, where the lake is stocked with trout and canoes, kayaks and paddleboats are available for rent from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Anglers also fish the Eagle, Blue and Colorado rivers. For a ranch-style day, 4 Eagle Ranch runs horseback riding, zip-lining, jeep and ATV tours, fly fishing and rafting in summer, plus sleigh rides in winter. Vail Village adds gondola rides, shopping and family events.

Vail has two peak seasons. Ski season runs late November through mid-April and drives demand for the few year-round RV parks. Summer, roughly late June through early September, is the prime window for camping: mountain passes are open, wildflowers peak in July, and daytime highs stay comfortable at elevation. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so plan hikes for the morning. Shoulder seasons carry trade-offs. Late spring can still bring wet snow at high elevations, and many forest-service campgrounds do not open until Memorial Day or later. Fall aspen color typically peaks in mid to late September around Vail Pass and Independence Pass. Winter camping is limited but possible. Tiger Run Resort operates year-round with heated water risers, and Sylvan Lake State Park is also open year-round, offering winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice fishing, though the shower building and water spigots are shut off outside the summer season. Fire restrictions are common in mid to late summer; check current orders before arrival.

Elevation is the defining factor. Vail town sits above 8,000 feet and nearby campgrounds sit higher, so allow a day to acclimate before strenuous hikes, drink extra water, and expect cool nights even in July. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast over the peaks in summer. Site styles differ sharply. Tiger Run offers a resort-style, manicured environment with 371 full-hookup sites and paved pads, while 4 Eagle Ranch has about 10 RV-only sites with no individual hookups, accepting rigs up to 45 feet. Sylvan Lake sites are basic, with drinking water and vault toilets available year-round and coin showers only in summer. Fire restrictions in the White River National Forest and Eagle County can prohibit open fires, charcoal grills and wood stoves during dry periods. Wildlife is active: store food properly for bears, and watch for moose along the Blue and Swan rivers.
