Campgrounds near Canaan, Connecticut
Canaan sits in the northwest corner of Connecticut, where the state meets the Berkshires of Massachusetts and the Taconic ridge of New York. The town is a practical base for RV travellers because three state-managed camping areas and several private parks fall within a short drive, spanning three state reservation systems.
The closest riverside option is Housatonic Meadows State Park in Sharon, a 452-acre park along the Housatonic River managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Rudd Pond Area of Taconic State Park sits just across the New York line near Millerton, and Beartown State Forest lies north in the southern Berkshires near Monterey. Waubeeka Family Campground offers a private, family-oriented alternative, and Lone Oak Camp Sites rounds out the nearby options.
Elevations run from roughly 200 to 600 metres in the surrounding hills, so temperatures at campgrounds can trend cooler than in the Housatonic valley itself. Traffic is light outside summer weekends and fall-foliage weeks.
Things to do near Canaan
The Housatonic River is the region's main draw for anglers. A two-mile stretch at Housatonic Meadows State Park, including the park shore, is limited to fly fishing, and the surrounding water supports canoeing and paddling. The Appalachian Trail crosses the park and threads through the ridges around Canaan, giving campers direct access to day hikes of varying length.
Rudd Pond is a 64-acre lake with swimming, fishing, and rowboat, kayak, and paddle boat rentals from the park concession. Beartown State Forest covers roughly 12,000 acres in the southern Berkshires, with a loop trail around Benedict Pond and shoreline fishing.
Bash Bish Falls, the tallest waterfall in Massachusetts, is a short drive from Rudd Pond and works well as a half-day family stop.

The camping season in this corner of the Northeast is short. Housatonic Meadows State Park runs a defined season, typically opening in late May and closing at noon on Labor Day Monday in early September. Beartown State Forest operates a shorter summer-into-fall season, with the last camping night generally falling in October, which can put foliage weekends in range for tent and small-trailer campers.
Spring brings mud and high water on the Housatonic and Benedict Pond; hiking trails through the Taconics can be slick into May. Summer is peak season, with warm days, cool nights, and the region's heaviest booking pressure. Fall delivers the region's signature hardwood colour from late September through mid-October.
Winter closes state campgrounds entirely in this area. Rudd Pond day use may continue when conditions allow, but overnight camping is not offered.

We had a wonderful experience taking Sassy to a bluegrass festival. Everything worked great and it was comforting to have a cool and relaxing space of our own for the weekend.
Jonathan C. - Aug 2026
Far and away a better experience than we could have hoped for. Sassy was the PERFECT RV for us. Very clean, adequate space (2 adults and a dog), well stocked with useful items and just all around fantastic. We traveled from CT to West Virginia, the trip just wouldn't have been the same without such comfortable accommodations. The couple was informative and incredibly flexible and accommodating with our unique schedule. We truly cannot say enough good things about our experience. We're already beginning to plan our next trip with Sassy. Thanks so much!!

How to book
Three different reservation systems cover the state campgrounds around Canaan. Connecticut state parks, including Housatonic Meadows, use ReserveAmerica; sites can be booked from the day before arrival up to eleven months out, with a maximum stay of fourteen consecutive days.
Massachusetts DCR sites, including Beartown State Forest, also run through ReserveAmerica. Inventory opens daily at 8 a.m. Eastern from April 1 through Labor Day. Walk-ins are not permitted; same-day reservations must be made online by 2 p.m.
New York State Parks handle Rudd Pond through the state park reservation system, with same-day reservations allowed until 3 p.m. and a nine-month booking window. Waubeeka Family Campground and Lone Oak Camp Sites book directly through their own campground offices.
What to expect on site
Facilities vary widely between the state and private parks in this area. Housatonic Meadows offers roughly 95 sites for tents and RVs with picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, showers, and a dump station, though RV size is limited and not all sites accommodate larger rigs. Confirm length restrictions before booking.
Beartown State Forest is primitive: twelve tent sites with fire rings, food storage lockers, and picnic tables, plus flush toilets and potable water but no showers, no hookups, and no dump station. Cell service is limited. Rudd Pond has 15 ground sites and 26 platform sites with a hot-water shower house, better suited to tents and small trailers than large motorhomes.
Black bears are active across the region. Store food and toiletries in vehicles or provided lockers, never inside tents.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Canaan, CT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Canaan, CT?
RV rental in Canaan is affordable compared to nearby Boston and New York metro pricing. On RVezy, you will typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, campervans from $125 to $200, and Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, depending on size, age, and season. The biggest savings come from booking midweek and avoiding peak fall foliage weekends in October, when Litchfield County demand spikes. Pro tip: book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for late September and early October to lock in a cheap RV rental Canaan price before leaf-peepers snap them up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Canaan%2C%20ConnecticutWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Canaan, CT?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Canaan. Connecticut does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes, travel trailers, and campervans listed on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork or DMV visit. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Canaan protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Canaan booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 7 with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. That means whether you are heading up to Mount Riga or out to Lime Rock Park for a race weekend, you have coverage for the unexpected. Pick the protection tier that fits your comfort level and go enjoy the Berkshires.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book an RV in Canaan?
You are not locked in the second you book. RVezy applies its own cancellation policy to every reservation (hosts do not set this), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have time to make sure everything lines up. After that, refunds depend on how far out your trip is. You will see the exact terms before you confirm payment, and RVezy support is available if a situation comes up. Translation: booking your Canaan RV trip is a low-risk way to plan a Litchfield Hills getaway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Canaan, CT?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Canaan options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) right in the listing. Canaan is a dream for dog owners: Housatonic Meadows State Park has riverside trails your pup will love, the Appalachian Trail crosses nearby in Salisbury for longer hikes, and most local breweries and farm stands in the Litchfield Hills are dog-friendly outdoors. Bring a leash, vaccination records, and a towel for muddy paws after Bear Mountain. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size so they can confirm any breed or weight notes.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/parks/housatonic-meadows-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Canaan?
Yes, RV delivery in Canaan is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about driving a big rig on Route 44's winding hills. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Lone Oak Campsites in East Canaan, Housatonic Meadows State Park, or even a private property, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery when you search to see hosts who offer it and their per-mile fee. It is the easiest way to enjoy a Canaan RV trip without ever touching the driver's seat of the RV itself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Canaan%2C%20ConnecticutHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Canaan?
Canaan sits in a sweet spot for an RV road trip from Canaan in almost any direction. The Berkshires of Massachusetts (Lenox, Tanglewood) are just 30 miles north, the Hudson Valley around Hyde Park is about 50 miles west, Mystic Seaport on the Connecticut coast is roughly 110 miles southeast, the White Mountains of New Hampshire are about 200 miles northeast, and Acadia National Park in Maine is around 400 miles. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is the gold standard for multi-state trips. Check the listing's mileage section, or message the host to ask about a custom package for your route.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2345Where are the best campgrounds near Canaan, CT?
You have fantastic options for RV camping near Canaan, all within about a 30-minute drive. Lone Oak Campsites in East Canaan is the biggest, with hundreds of sites, pools, and full hookups near the base of Canaan Mountain. Housatonic Meadows State Park in Sharon offers riverside sites along the Housatonic, perfect for fly fishing. Macedonia Brook State Park in Kent has rustic sites in a gorgeous forested setting (no hookups, great for self-contained rigs). White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield sits on a 4,000-acre nature preserve. For a Berkshires bonus, Beartown State Forest in nearby Monterey, MA is just over the line. Book Connecticut state parks through ReserveCT several months out for summer weekends.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/state-parks-and-forests-campingWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Canaan, CT?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for a Canaan RV trip, and each stretch has its own personality. May and June bring blooming mountain laurel (Connecticut's state flower) and daytime temps generally in the 65 to 78 F range. July and August are warm and green, typically 75 to 85 F, perfect for swimming at Lake Wononscopomuc in Salisbury. Late September through mid-October is legendary: the Litchfield Hills explode into red, orange, and gold, with crisp 50 to 65 F days, ideal for hiking Bear Mountain. Winters are cold (often below freezing with snow), and most local campgrounds close from mid-October to mid-April. Insider tip: aim for the first week of October for peak foliage without Columbus Day weekend crowds.
weather.gov/aly/I'm a first-timer. Is renting an RV in Canaan really doable?
Yes, and Canaan is honestly one of the friendliest places in New England for a first-time RV rental. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to run the propane, water, slides, awning, and dump valves, so you're never guessing. The roads around Canaan are scenic two-lanes (Route 7, Route 44, Route 41) with relatively light traffic compared to coastal Connecticut, which is perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Start with a travel trailer or Class C under 25 feet if you're nervous. Pro tip: book your first night at Lone Oak Campsites, only 15 minutes from town, so you can practice setup close to help if you need it.
portal.ct.gov/dmv/driver-services/driver-services/driving-manualsWhat happens if I break down during my Canaan RV trip?
Take a breath: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at a Canaan trailhead or rolling through Norfolk at midnight. Roadside assistance covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, as local owners often know the best mobile RV techs in Litchfield County. Cell service is solid along Route 7 and Route 44 but can dip in the hills near Mohawk State Forest, so save the RVezy support number before you head out. You are covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Canaan RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is standard for RV rental Connecticut trips out of Canaan, and the location is perfect for it: you are about 8 miles from the Massachusetts border, just minutes from New York, and Vermont is roughly an hour north. Most hosts allow travel throughout New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and into Canada (Quebec and the Maritimes are popular routes), though confirm Canada travel with your host since some coverage terms apply at the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a classic loop is Canaan to the Green Mountains of Vermont to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and back, easily done in a week.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I plan for around Canaan?
Budgeting fuel for your Canaan RV trip is easy once you know the ballpark. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches run 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 14 MPG. Gas in northwest Connecticut tends to run slightly higher than the national average, so fill up across the state line in Massachusetts or New York when you can; the Stop & Shop gas station in Great Barrington, MA is a popular fuel-up just 12 miles north. For a 300-mile weekend loop, most renters spend $90 to $180 on gas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Canaan?
For summer weekends and fall foliage, book 3 to 4 months ahead for the best campgrounds near Canaan, especially Housatonic Meadows and Macedonia Brook, which fill fast. Connecticut state park campgrounds use Reserve America (reserveamerica.com), and reservations open up to 11 months in advance. Private parks like Lone Oak Campsites take reservations directly through their website and tend to have more flexibility midweek. For shoulder season (May, early June, late September), 4 to 6 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Insider tip: Tuesday through Thursday arrivals almost always have availability, even on holiday weeks, and many private parks offer a discount for stays of 4+ nights.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/state-parks-and-forests-campingWhat are the roads like for driving an RV around Canaan?
Driving an RV around Canaan is genuinely enjoyable. The main routes (US Route 7, US Route 44, and Route 41) are well-maintained two-lane highways with gentle curves through the Litchfield Hills, and traffic is light compared to I-95 along the Connecticut coast. A few things to know: Route 7 between Cornwall Bridge and Kent has scenic but winding sections where you'll want to take it slow, and the historic covered bridge in West Cornwall has a 10-foot height limit, so larger rigs should detour via Route 7. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: avoid Route 44 east through Norfolk during morning fog, when visibility drops in the valleys.
portal.ct.gov/dot/travel/travel-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Canaan?
Campgrounds near Canaan range from full-service resorts to rustic state park sites, so you can match the experience to your rig. Lone Oak Campsites offers 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, two pools, a camp store, and laundry. Housatonic Meadows State Park has water spigots and a dump station but no individual hookups (great for self-contained RVs with solar or generators). Most private parks in Litchfield County have potable water fill stations, dump stations (usually $10 to $20 for non-guests), Wi-Fi near the office, and propane refills. Insider tip: the Canaan town transfer station does not accept RV waste, so always use a campground dump station or the one at the Pilot Travel Center in Milldale, CT.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/state-parks-and-forests-campingWhat's actually inside an RV I'd rent in Canaan?
You'll get more home comforts than you'd expect. Most RVs on RVezy for a Canaan rental come with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, climate control via furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays at places like Macedonia Brook. Campervan rental Canaan options are more compact but still have a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Each listing shows a full amenity checklist; just filter by sleeps count and features to find your match.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rvs-recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons can I get with my motorhome rental in Canaan?
Most motorhome rental Canaan hosts offer practical add-ons to make life easier. Common options include kitchen kits (pots, dishes, utensils for $25 to $50), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators for boondocking, and propane top-offs. Some hosts also offer pre-stocked groceries or firewood bundles. Pickup is usually at the host's location in or near Canaan, and many offer delivery to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, with typical allowances of 100 to 150 free miles per night and overage fees of $0.30 to $0.50 per mile, plus generator hours often included free up to 2 to 4 per night. Always confirm specifics on the listing.
portal.ct.gov/decd/content/tourismHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the full trip cost through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's size and value, and it is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape and within the mileage and generator limits. To avoid any deposit issues, do the pre-trip walkthrough with the host, take date-stamped photos at pickup and return, top off the fuel, and empty the holding tanks at a dump station before drop-off. That is it; you are set for a smooth Canaan RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Canaan in winter for a ski trip?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Canaan is a fun option for skiing at Catamount (about 8 miles away on the CT/NY border), Ski Butternut in Great Barrington (around 20 miles north), or Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall (about 15 miles south). Winter rentals are limited but available, and you will want a four-season RV with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a reliable furnace. Most winter renters park at a campground or private property with shore power (30 or 50-amp electric) since boondocking in sub-freezing temps drains batteries fast. Filter for hosts who explicitly allow winter use, and confirm tire condition for snow. Insider tip: Lone Oak closes seasonally, so plan to stay at a host's private lot or a year-round park just across the Massachusetts line.
